Surely the question wouldn't be too obvious, would it?
Japan and Russia?

Yes Taiwan is one of the other countries, although the other 2 main ones are Vietnam and the Phillipines, these islands are uninhabited and I think it's all to do with mineral and fishing rights. Malalsia and Brunei also want a piece of them.

OK Back to the sunny side of the Atlantic for this question.
Here is a picture of Emerald Plaza in San Diego.
This building has become somewhat of an icon.

Question: What is the significance of the angle of the towers' roofs? (and no, it is not so that rain will flow off!)

I'll venture a guess that its got to do with either solar power or climate control systems and that the angles either face due south or due north.
edv

That's a good guess, but not the answer I'm looking for.
The answer is more whimsical than practical, if that helps. Think of where San Diego is on a map.

Surely it couldn't be it's latitude and longitude in angles?
edv

You've got it Drew!
The angle of inclination of the tops of the towers coincides with the latitude of the building, approximately 32 deg 42 min.
You're go!

I'm thinking its in Florida. Lots of natural springs there to start a river with, and lots of rivers and lakes for it to flow a short distance to. I'll call it the Okeehootcheefenoka. :D
edv
7th February 2008, 05:39
Steve, there's a good argument for Eratosthenes as a father of physical geography...he did believe the Earth was round and calculated its circumference to an astounding degree of accuracy...
I have always maintained that geography is a tough thing to really define. To my mind, it has always had 2 basic elements: our surroundings, and our (mankind's) place in it. So, to me, valid questions about geography could include things like 'how tall is that mountain?' as well as 'why is there a settlement at the confluence of these rivers?' with equal relevance.
But that's just me.

OK here's one for the Yanks...
My wife and I recently drove down portions of the Old Route 66 in the USA...a famous and important link for Americans, both geographically and historically.
There are many projects ongoing to recover and restore this highway, especially as it holds such great nostalgia for retiring babyboomers, but mainly for its historical and cultural significance.
Anyway, the question is this:
Regarding Route 66:
1) In what city does it start (easternmost point)?
2) At what famous landmark does it end (westernmost point)?
3) How many states does it pass through? (Name them if you can!)
schmenke
3rd March 2008, 15:27
Educamated guess here...
Start: chicago
Landmark End: Rodeo Drive, Los Angeles?
States: Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Nevada, California???
Well, Schmenke, you got 3 out of a possible 11...
Start is indeed Chicago.
Landmark at the end is not rodeo Drive.
You got 2 states right. (Illinois & California)
Number of states is wrong.

more than 2000 miles all the way.
Get your kicks, on Route 66...
Well going by the cities mentioned in the song, I'd agree with Schmenke on the start & end. But I think it swings south around Colorado. So take out Colorado from Schmenke's list of states and add Missouri, New Mexico & Arizona

Yes on Texas and Oklahoma. No on the others.
