hi ive bought a vw super beetle 1973 rolling shell which i plan to restore over the next year to a herbie replica what i need to know is what spec to build it to for local road rallys around carmarthenshire and ceredigion and historic rallys what engine can go in and what mods i can do and what class herbie competes in many thanks

If this is a genuine question:

(1) Why did you post here and not on the Rallying forum?
(2) Have you done the obvious and asked your local VW dealer if they can give you any information about local clubs etc?
(3) Why choose a VW Beetle to go rallying with? They're fine for mud plugging but don't make good rally cars.
(4) If you want to compete in historic rallies it has to be in period spec. so engine transplants (ie Porsche) are out of the question
(5) If you're making a Herbie lookalike it sounds as if you are more interested in car shows than in rallies.

yes this is genuine question
and 1 i posted here cause a Google search sent me here and once registered the first forum were can talk about anything was ere
2 no hadn't thought about asking vw them selves
3 Herbie one of the best race cars ever and Ive never driven one so wouldn't know
4 that's spooky that you know about my Porsche idea (dream) unless you been checking my Facebook lol id love some more info on period mods how dos that work
5 no deffently interested in rallying not shows

If you knew anything of the history of the VW Beetle and of Porsche you would know that Dr Porsche designed the VW and that the first Porsche cars used VW components. The concept is the same: rear mounted flat 4 engine, torsion bar suspension etc The engine mountings are the same and a Porsche 356 engine fits straight into a Beetle. Emerson Fittipaldi's first race car in the sixties was a Porsche engined VW.
Despite the Disney film, a VW didn't make a good race car either - the swing axle rear end made the handling tricky.
Before you waste any money, check out whether there is any form of historic rallying that accepts a modified VW. You may find that they only accept homologated period modifications. You'll need to contact one of the motor clubs that run historic rallies.

For Historic road rallying the only mods allowed are to Gp 1 spec .
That means that you are only allowed the 1300cc or the 1600cc Beetle engines with limited mods as shown in the Gp1 Homologation .
You would be in the up to 1600cc class , against things like Escort Mexicos etc , so I hope you are only thinking about doing it for the fun .[ Although most road rallies are classed by the crews experience , rather than the car ]

Oh c'mon now. If they're good enough for Gumball 3000 I am sure that they are good enough for Historic rallying as well. ;)

The Beetle in that photo has whitewall tyr4es, not exactly competition rubber!. For British-style road rallying, which includes tarmac special stages, one of the 'homologation specials' like an Escort Mexico, Lotus-Cortina, Mini Cooper S, Sunbeam Imp etc would be a better proposition than a VW Beetle. Don't forget the swing axle rear suspension!

yea it will totally be for fun Ive been hunting around and found these couple of videos you may enjoy

Have a google of HRCR (Historic rally car register), for daylight regularity rallying the Beetle will be fine as the result is based more on the navigation....there are loads of clubs in your area but none really do historic road events....Most local clubs i'd guess are Gwendraeth Valley , Teifi Valley etc
