Really! the railway is 9,289 km (5,772 mi) long and that's approximately 1 bridge per kilometre. Or is the statistic you have only for major bridges?

The info I have simply states that there are ---- bridges on the Trans-Siberian railway.

Here is a direct quote from the info site I use (with the number crossed out :))

Trans-Siberian railway crosses exactly ???? bridges

I think the problem arises where the railway divides off into 3 different routes
*Moscow-Vladivostok *Moscow-Ulaanbataar *Moscow-Beijing

My source was answering for the Vladivostok route alone :(

So if you take all three routes into account the answer would be close to 10 000

On the Vladivostok rout there are 3901 bridges. But as d-type pointed out there are nearly 10,000 if you include the Ulaanbataar and Beijing routes as well.

Great effort Anfield, firstly you have 7 of the top 10.

Brasilia is surprisingly 17th, Montevideo is way down in about 35th. Uruguay only has a tiny population generally. Manaus is 32nd.

So Rio, Sao Paulo, Lima, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Bogota, Santiago are all correct. 3 to get first up which are 7th, 9th and 10th on the list

You have the top 4 correct but wrong order slightly. Very good first effort though.

Vietnam?

D-Type
9th October 2014, 23:15
Africa is correct but you need to be more precise. It was reputedly described as "The Lunatic Railway" by the newspapers at the time it was being built

anfield5
9th October 2014, 23:51
I seem to remember it was built by the Brits, and was on Africa's East coast, so Uganda, through Kenya to the sea?

Gauge - wouldn't even know how to guess (but 00 gauge is small model trains)

Animal - i would guess at either a lion, or maybe a snake. A lion because... well... it is Africa, or a snake because it winds it's way across the country like a metal snake?

D-Type
10th October 2014, 01:02
(1) Kenya-Uganda Railway
(2) We still need the gauge
(3) Lions is correct - the Man-Eaters of Tsavo which delayed construction of the Tsavo Bridge by eating the workforce.

Edit: Lion-Eaters corrected to Man-Eaters

Storm
10th October 2014, 07:38
you mean the Man-Eaters of Tsavo :D

Or did Lions build a natural bridge and ended up being eaten by humans? that would be a Lunatic Line

steveaki13
10th October 2014, 08:05
hmmm..... I assume its not going to be standard gauge of 4 foot 8.5 inches.

So Its either going to be broad gauge (i.e wider) or Narrow Gauge.

Unlikely to be Broad Gauge so I am guessing Narrow Gauge of 3 foot something

D-Type
11th October 2014, 10:32
Yes, 3ft something but not normally expressed that way.

steveaki13

true, but it depends if you know it or not.

Complete guess 3 foot 6 inch gauge?

D-Type

D-Type

Let's call it a day. The gauge was 1 metre. This was part of the lunacy as it didn't match the counties either side - the South African, Rhodesia and Nyasaland system on one side and Sudan on the other which both had a 3ft 6in gauge so international running would never be a possibility.

D-Type
16th October 2014, 16:25
Anfield 5 has it - the answer is the Lake of Mentieth, the famous one. It is a freshwater lake. According to Wikipedia some artificial lochs/lakes are named "Lake whatever" and it hints there may be other Scottish "Lakes" but Mentieth is the famous one.

schmenke, "Loch" means "Lake" in Gaelic so all Scottish lakes are called "Lochs", like Loch Lomond and Loch Ness. They also use the word for "enclosed bodies of seawater" or "sea lochs" such as Loch Long.
