I posted this earlier in the "general" part of the forum but i think it concerns WRC too, if not please erase the thread.
Subaru unveils its new Impreza at the New York Autoshow, here are some pics:
http://blogs.edmunds.com/Straightline/2559
http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp?section_id=15&article_id=5095
and for the sedan http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-subaru-impreza/
My poit of view is thats is horrible and looks like an american car, and its difficult to see it as a nice WRC or maybe the guys at prodrive can make it look nicer, also I think the new lancer looks waaaaay better.
All coments welcomed

Subarus never really have been things of real beauty, more purpose and aggresion, they just seem to get uglier tho..
1st ipressions.. a bit Saab-ish front end and Bmw 1 seies rear from the side profile... but what kills it IMO are the hideous Lexus style rear lights. UGH!
Gimme an EvoX anyday!

Maybe the can gett it good with rally spec.

It is not a beautiful car IMHO.
Thats one car for which the artist's impressions looked better than the finished article..

Is it only me that gets sick of people saying: 'this is a ...'/'looks like a ...'/it has got the nose of the ... and the back of the ...' ??

As long as this stops the trend of the impreza getting bigger and heavier then whatever.
Every 2 years the updates to the impreza end up with everbody calling it hideous, and by the end of that period people are used to/like the changes.

I get sick of just seeing that car.
Last Impreza that I really liked was the 2002 bug-eyed one. And that was also more like a shadow of the earlier versions...

I've like all the imprezas until this one. Maybe it will grow on me.

My initial impression is very boring looking car. Although I still don't like the front nose of the current Impreza, the current Impreza at least had sharp aggressive looking, but this new one is more like family car than high performance car. I wonder how the STI version will look like??? And more importantly will WRCar be based on the sedan Impreza or the hatchback (or station wagon...)???

Well the nose is a definite improvement on the current model, side on the roof line looks far too high (either that or its being driven by a midget), the read door / window looks like its from a BMW 1 series, and the rear end could be any korean car.
Maybe someone out there who's good with photoshop could do a WRT mock up?
It can only look better...........

Haha, yeah spot on, I was thinking the exact same thing. Can't say I like it, can't say I hate it. But it looks dull and conservative. Especially the "normal" car on the last link looks very outdated. And Lexus-rearlights, that's so over.

Size of the new one is probably hundred times better than the current model, but if you don't comment the size, otherwise....
...it looks like a baboon has designed this with a scarf on eyes using just a left hand. Can a car get any uglier than this? :mark: I've always wanted to by Impreza, no matter what model, this one I wouldn't buy. I can tell that this is going to be a commercial failure already now.

I hope so ,too, but the new Impreza looks bigger, doesn't it? I read some discussion on blogs about whether it's bigger and the consensus is that it's inching toward American Corolla size. It looks a little taller and wider, but maybe it's only shorter thats creating an illusion.
Eh, it's bland, but not hideous.

What decade are their designers living in?

I believe the saloon is intended only for the American market. I quite like the hatchback.

you seriously do not see a mazda3 when you look at: http://blogs.edmunds.com/.ee9996e/cmd.233/enclosure..ee9996f and then: http://www.automedia.com/NewCarBuyersGuide/photos/2006/Mazda/MAZDA3/Hatchback/2006_Mazda_MAZDA3_ext_1.jpg

I don't say you're not right, but always when I open a topic about a new car (English, Dutch, German, it doesn't matter which language it is) I see comparings with other cars..
Not important, but I just wanted to say it somewhere :D

So, this means the end of the WRX too. This will be a great error by management, because nobody will buy this turd if it ain't even a performance vehicle.

What? Impreza will still be available in three flavors: 2.5i (normally aspirated), WRX, and STi.

It's the same old story repeating again, and it always works. The stock version is intentionaly build ugly. In few weeks or months the tuned version ot STI will pop up and our jaws will drop. So, what's next? You buy the ugly one and make it better. That's what Subaru WRX is, project car.

Stick a WRC-spec front and rear wing on it and it will be fine.
At least aesthetically, if nothing else.

Well I read differently? Example:

Perhaps I've been 5th-April-fooled? Or will the WRX only be on the Sedan and not the Hatchback?

Well, I don't know what you guys in Europe are getting, but it looks like the states will have all flavors in both Saloon and hatch. Same engines as before, the saloon is six inches longer, and both are 4.5 inches wider.

I heard rumors of the three door hatch, but that seems untrue.

Ah, sorry, didn't realize you were speaking strictly about the UK market. It appears you get 1500cc and 2000cc normally aspirated Imprezas and the STi, all in hatch form.
In North America, we're to get a 2500cc normally aspirated saloon and hatch, as well as a 2500cc turbo'ed saloon and hatch WRX, and a 2500cc turbo'ed hatch-only STi.
But then, what are we arguing about anyway - like either one of us cares about anything but the STi, regardless! :)

Well, it looks like it has the underbody sprayed white, so I imagine it's prepared.
Rally-America's Subaru of America entrants run open class, not GroupN, so they are free to build about anything from anything and call it anything.
BCE, am I wrong?

You have to retain the basic shape and sillouhette and certain elements of the floor pan/ firewall or something like that...
