No Laureus Awards for F1 this time

Well given the composition of the jury (plenty of tennis and football players) it's hardly a surprise that the prizes went to tennis and football players.

"2006 championship contenders Alonso and Schumacher lost out to tennis' Roger Federer for the coveted Sportsman of the Year title."

"Rookie Hamilton, meanwhile, who in Australia last month reached the podium on debut as reigning GP2 champion, also missed the Breakthrough of the Year award, which went to French Wimbledon tennis champion Amelie Mauresmo."

"Renault had been nominated for Team of the Year but the award went to Italy's World Cup-winning football squad."

Well that seems pretty reasonable, considering most of it would be decided subjectively.

Bit curious about Mauresmo though - surely being near the top for 8 or so years then actually winning, then falling back to normal routine in the Oz open wouldn't be as big a breakthrough as a rookie taking out a relatively high-profile title on his first attempt, and earning himself a considerable promotion to one of the most elite and high profile sports in the process.

Not detracting from the fact she's a good sportswoman, but breakthrough award isn't something that clicks to mind.

Well it was exactly the Award that Mauresmo received that attracted my attention too.
One would expect them jury members to think a bit.

Tennis gets far too much awards for what is a crap sport. If anything Rossi,Loeb or Ponting should've won Sportsman of the Year. Team of the Year either All Blacks or Australia. There is a big bias to popular sports, not to deserved recipients.

alonso is not a sport man ,is just a driver nothing more..no personality .. nothing..i am very sorry
