India.
It's a Hindi-Urdu word for "racket court" and Gymkhana Clubs existed before the existence of the motor car. The earliest motor Gymkhana event I could find was in 1895. I found that in the "Shell Book of Firsts" (1975)

Well that's no surprise as the term was applied to Pony Club events pre- WW2 and I had never heard it applied to autotests, trials etc until that Yank buffoon started sliding his black and green monstrosity all over the gaff!
Note: Buffoon - Italian in origin!

Yes, but in the modern context entirely inappropriately - it doesn't mean automobile gymnastics.

In American parlance I've heard it used interchangeably used with autocross, or driving around rubber cones in a parking lot. It's surprising how competitive people are and how much they spend on their car just for this particular sport.

Autocross is a field-based sport in uk mostly testing car control and cornering technique can be grass or mud
Driving around gates and bays formed of cones in a car park is an autotest.
