Rally now finished, win for Princen but top three very close!

Are Skoda Belgium supporting anyone this year after Loix' retirement?

Yes, Achiel Boxoen, but if you can call that supporting, I don't know.. :p

An Opel Kadett with 2.4 engine. Giving the limited experience of my driver (only his 5th Rally) I think the result was very good. Some very good stage times with faster cars behind us in the morning (when it was still a bit wet). When it dried out we lost some places, but overall very happy with the rally :)

Opel! I like Opels! I kept that last Opels competing in USA/Canada going some years back...We got Kadett A which mercifully nobody bother with and then Ascona and Manta A with the CIH 1900...And one friend bought what i believe is the only Ascona B in America which was brought over for Olympus WRC and then stayed here..Built a good motor for that one in 1987 and last year re-did the bottom end with new even longer rods and much shorter and very light pistons, then made him a couple of steel flywheels....that one is 1965cc and then next one will be 2020cc-----if the guy ever pays his bill..

What can you tell me about how that one got to be 2,4? Normal iron head? What clutch? What gearbox? I want to see photos!

I love Opel too. Built two Ascona B which I rallied in late 80´s and 90´s. ANTE Malmgren built the engines, 2,0 with 48 Weber. The 2,4 litre I believe is a bored 2,2 litre engine which was in the model Opel Rekord. Or else it´s the 16V which was in 400. I don´t know ...

It's a 8v 2.4 engine from an Opel Omega. Explained it all to Jan in PM, not to further spoil this topic. It's the Belgian Rally News topic, not Dupanton Rally News :p

Very nice entry list for the 2nd round of the Belgian Championship this weekend.

Cherain (DS3 RRC): my favorite for the victory
Princen (Fabia R5): won first round and can challenge Cherain
Verschueren (Fabia R5): 2nd in first round
Abbring (208 R5): 3th in first round but here the car is less important than in Haspengouw.
Dilley (Fabia R5): First time with Fabia, but top 5 is possible
Demaerschalk (DS3 R5): Talented but not much experience in an R5. And it's a DS3...
Allart (Fabia R5): crashed in Haspengouw
Debackere (Fabia R5)
De Cecco (208 R5): Could be around 5th by the end of the Rally.
Lim (I20 R5): Curious to see what he will achieve
Fumal (DS3 R5)
Maeyaert (Fiesta R5): New car for last year Historic champion. Only tested the car last weekend in a Rallysprint. He wasn't slow but there is still a lot of progress possible.
Fernémont (Fiesta R5): competitor for De Cecco, Debackere etc
Kenis (Mini RRC):
Albert (Fabia WRC): only WRC at the start. Can maybe finish somewhere around 5th.

Also 4 Porsches at the start (Snijers, Duez, Bouvy, Claerhout) and a lot of fast FWD cars:
http://sparally.com/fr/node/104 (liste engagés BRC)

2x2 stages on Friday, mostly on and around the Spa Francorchamps Circuit. 3x4 stages on Saturday.

Kevin Abbring smashes the opposition and leads Spa Rally with over 1-minute advantage after just 4 stages! What's wrong with the other drivers?

2. Chewon Lim/Martijn Wydaeghe (ROK/B) Hyundai i20 R5 +1.08,9
3. Cédric Cherain/Jean-Pierre Delmelle (B) Citroën DS3 RRC +1.20,8

My picture :-)

I'm quite disappointed by Abbring,
He is fast, but he makes so many mistakes. Was hoping for a victory for him and the Peugeot team.

I was standing quite close to the point where he ripped of his wheel. It was a fast left hander.

Yesterday evening, on the last stage he spun in front of us well. At that point Verschueren was right behind Princen who switched to road mode after seeing a yellow flag.

The stages will resume 45min later then planned to compensate for the delays in between the cars.

I hope for a big fight between Princen and Cherain and I hope Cherain wins it to motivate him and his sponsors for the rest of the season.

Regards from Spa :-)

Spa Rally was a crazy rally. Difficult stages, lots of rain, unexpected twist and a lot of crashes... My opinion:
1st Cherain (DS3 RRC): Poor start but very strong on Saturday in the rain. Expected him to be faster on Friday, but won anyway.
2nd Allart (Fabia R5): very regular but invisible rally. Moved up to 2nd because of the problems and crashes of the others.
3th Verschueren (Fabia R5): Looked like he was going to have a very bad result for the championship. Start on SS1 with doing 1 lap to much up and around the Spa circuit... Not the codriver fault, but the driver didn't listen! Then a small off, 2 punctures etc on Saturday, but still managed to climb up to 3th.
4th Fumal (DS3 R5): Gentleman driver, he had a spun in front of us, but overall a good and regular rally for him.
5th Bouvy (Porsche): Best of the Porsches. But would have been beaten by Snijers (untill he too retired) if not for the codriver of Snijers: 3 minutes early, then 8 minutes early and then 8 minutes late. So at the end of Friday, already 12 minutes 20 of penalties :p
7th Rouard (DS3 R3t): young guy, his first year in the Belgian Championship and a class of his own in FWD. Also 2nd overall in the championship now!
8th Delhez (Adam R2): good driver, first R2 and first Junior, although the level isn't very high and De Mevius retired with a broken Engine on SS2.
10th Dehaye (Golf Kit Car): special mention for this female driver. Nice result in her VW Golf Kit Car.

Retirements:
De Cecco (208 R5): Engine on SS2
Fernémont (Fiesta R5): retired after day 1 with some mechanical problem I think
Lim (I20 R5): very strong start, the surprise of the rally! Couldn't believe his times with his lack of experience. But very clean driving and that pays off. Unfortunately he hit a stone in a cut, not really a big mistake but broke his suspension.
Dilley (Fabia R5): good start, was very fast. But had a double puncture on Saturday which caused his retirement.
Abbring (208 R5): too wild pretty much everywhere in the rain. But very impressive on Friday. Crashes and damaged his suspension.
Debackere (Fabia R5): good rally for her, better than I expected. But ripped a wheel off on Saturday afternoon.
Kenis (Mini RRC): Lost the brakes
De Maerschalck (DS3 R5): OK rally, could have finished 2nd but retired with some electrical problem.
Maeyaert (Fiesta R5): difficult rally. Switching between good stage times and mistakes. Went off and got stuck in a ditch during the last loop. But he showed potential for sure!
Princen (Fabia R5): Big crash on the last stage... Almost lost victory on the last stage in Round 1 and that maybe pressured him into his mistake. Although bad visibility and lost of concentration because of that was also a part of the reason. Princen broke a rib so will possibly miss the next round too... That could be dramatic for his championship chances.

But, the last word isn't yet spoken about the rally. Cherain, Fumal and Maeyaert are under investigation for using non allowed tyres. Something to do with a rain compound (Pirelli for Cherain and Fumal) that might or might not be allowed in the FIA Regional Rally Regulation. But I don't know exactly what it's all about.

I will do! Still not entirely (entyrely? :p) clear what happened.
I think they used this tyre:
https://scontent-bru2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-0/p296x100/16298390_1430546900312750_6584067266382048960_n.jp g?oh=efbbeadc59752b74f14dbdb730a5976c&oe=595A82E4

Discussion I think is that the tyre is allowed in WRC (apparently it was developed for WRC Germany) but isn't on the FIA list of admitted tyres for Regional Rallies.

Forgive me for clogging up the desk with my Britishness, but all this Spa footage made me excited for my annual Ypres visit in June, so I thought I'd ask the more knowledgeable amongst you (so everyoen, compared to me), which of the local regulars are likely to do Ypres or not? Assuming the pound doesn't crash too badly before then (possibly too positive thinking), this is what I could put together for the R5 contingent from available information on TER and the British championship, thought I'd ask which locals are likely to join. As far as I can work out, De Cecco and Allart certainly won't be there, at least not in R5s. Will the RRCs (ie: Mini) be eligible?

Wow! If they also disqualify Allart and Verschueren, then after so many years, Porsche will win a Belgian championship rally again! :)

What's wrong with these people wanting to go faster break the rules:D

For me the WRC rain tyres meant a clear advantage and therefore the disqualification is right decision.

I know and I agree, but still feel disapointed. Hope we will see Cherain many more times this year.

I hope to go to the Wallonie this year, nice rally in perfect scenery, just like Spa! But hopefully with different weather.

i thought that tyres for national events were faster but less durable than those used in the wrc evets.

I just read this:

Pour faire simple et sans entrer dans les détails, il apparaît que Pirelli a bel et bien demandé l’homologation de ce pneu pour les championnats régionaux, sur lequel se réfère celui du BRC, mais que celle-ci n’a pas été formellement actée puisque la FIA n’a pas publié de liste mise à jour en 2017.
http://www.autonews-magazine.com/cherain-fumal-disqualifies-spa-rally/

It seems that Pirelli has nicely and properly asked for homologation for this tire for regional championships, where the Belgian Championship makes use of, but the FIA didn't formally agree, since the list isn't put up to date in 2017.

Really gutted now...

That's not a rule. It depends what each ASN allows. In this case if I understand right these were proper rain tyres while others used ERC single pattern tyres.

Regarding the tyres: Talked to the Belgian importer of Pirelli racing and rally tyres. The FIA hasn't yet published the 2017 list, which is why the tyres are not allowed. The mistake is done by FIA, not Pirelli. He even showed me a mail from Jean Todt apologizing to Pirelli and the crews for their mistake.

We expect 11 R5 cars, but Princen is still waiting for confirmation from the doctor. We also expect 6 GT cars.

I miss Andy Lefevere on the entry list, who always shows a good pace on these kind of roads. Looking forward to the pace of Van Woensel who will drive a Porsche GT instead of his Mitsu WRC.

Very sad news, another rally accident in the recent weeks (after Italy and France), I hope both spectators are OK.

The rally continues and it's Kevin Abbring who leads it after 17 stages. Maybe a win will improve his self-confidence after a series of bad results. But it won't be easy, because Verschueren is only 13 seconds behind Abbring's back.

We were there and saw everything happen... It's a well known place, every year cars go off there. This year there was no forbidden area on that corner, which frankly is just stupid. Unfortunately I predicted something would go wrong there seeing where the people were placed.
The young woman had surgery, broken pelvis and legs. The boy had only bruises.

Had a good rally. Yesterday I was, just like dupanton, at the place of the crash where 2 people got hurt, which was a sad thing to see. Fortunately things were not more serious than this. If it happened with one of the first cars, it could have been much worse, as there were much more spectators. It's a place where someone crashes every year, the organizers knew the risks there. It just seems like the organisation doesn't take their responsibility. I've been on places with dangerous spectators, never seen a marshall or safety car take action. Competition-wise it was a great event. Great entries thanks to the R5's. Abbring-208 was a bit too strong for the opposition. I think it's interesting to mention that Kevin was quicker in comparison to Verschueren on stages with more junctions and longer straights, while on more difficult stages the difference was smaller. Maybe due to better exits in those slow corners by Abbring, maybe because the engine of the 208 R5 isn't that bad at all? ;)

For me it's not that illogical. PSA R5 engines had always great peak power but they have been lacking torque which plays the biggest role in twisty stages with long corners, not on straights.

This weekend there was the Sezoensrally, 5th round of the Belgian Championship.
Verschueren and Princen fought for the win all rally long, untill Verschueren broke his suspension on a rock in a cut on SS13. The rock was exposed by that, causing Allart to loose time with a bent suspension and Boxoen to retire with a broken steering arm.
Geusens finished 2nd in the end, the irishman Wright 3th.
in the championship, Princen closed the gap to Verschueren to a few points. Abbring didn't start, so it will be difficult for him, Allart or Geusens to take the tile away from the 2 top drivers.

And eventhough it was reported that Princen wouldn't do any events this year, he just entered and is the 13th R5 on the list! Great list eventhough Allart, Debackere, Geussens, Maeyaert, De Jong and Kobus are all absent..

Weijs Jr - Degandt is back for this event with his Ford Fiesta R5. 14 R5's. Will be a big battle with a lot of contenders.

Very nice list for East Belgian Rally, penultimate round of the championship:
14 R5 cars!
Favorites: Princen, Verschueren (Fabia), Abbring (208), Weijs (Fiesta) and Cherain (DS3). The first three are still fighting for the championship. Verschueren is leading by quite a margin though.
Outsiders: De Mevius (Fabia), De Cecco (208), Fernémont (Fiesta), De Maerschalk (DS3) and Dilley (I20).
Others: Boxoen (Fabia), Hommes, Lannoo (208) and Litt (Fiesta)
Also Albert, Canal Robles (Fabia WRC), Van Hoof (Evo IV grA), Kenis (Mini RRC), 5 Porsches, a bunch of fast FWD cars and a nice Historic entrylist.

Fast and blind stages, best in Belgium. Should be a great rally :)

Great video and really interesting to see how the different cars tackle that bump. The Fabias and Fiestas really seem to kick the arse end up where as the Pugs just ride over it. Very illuminating.

Abbring and de Mevius had also big moments there. Abbring with the back high in the air so Peugeot was no eyception. IMO the way they were kicked depended mostly ont he way they were working with brakes over the series of bumps.

Mirek
7th November 2017, 14:40
Aha, I meant different bump. You can hear from the sound that Princen (first car in the video) goes over under braking (or at least without throttle) but Abbring and most of the others under throttle. But yes, Peugeots seem to run over the the speedbump better.

This weekend we had the Legend Boucles de Bastogne, already quite well known historic rally. Officially not a rally, but for each stage they give an "ideal time", if you are slower you get penalty points, the one with the least points wins... Bryan Bouffier won the event with an Escort MK2. He was the first foreign driver in 24 years to win the Boucles... :) Duval finished second, after having a puncture.

So, first round of the Belgian championship was dry, but very cold. I went spectating anyway! :)
Princen won with 1.2s on Verschueren, after Verschueren got a 30" penalty for not following the roadbook and cutting the stage. De Mevius was 3th and was never far off the leaders, good rally for him. Cherain crashed at the end of the 4th stage, which is probably bad news for his championship already. He was planning to do 6 events which is also the number of results that count for the championship.

Last weekend I was on Herock Spa Rally, for first time on rally in Belgium out of Ypres (where I was 10x or 11x, I think). I would like to share my opinions about that rally. As I was there with young czech driver, first step was communication with organiser. Despite everything was only in french and dutch, everything worked well, communication with organiser was great. With this I would like to thank Dupanton for big help, especially with translations.

Base of the rally was on the parking next to Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Nice place, only quite muddy with water due to the weather, but thats the situation. Especially first day evening the access to service area from north was closed by special stage, so only chance to leave that area was through small tunnel, so bigger cars like vans had no chance. And people also as this tunnel was only for cars... Special stages around Spa are really beautiful and demanding. There was lot of special stages going on circuit or small service roads - from my point of view it was too much, most of them were for more laps and there were some problems with catching slower cars etc. Fernemont was very fast on that stages and that was key success (together with punctures of Princen and De Mevius) to win.

I was really disappointed with the situation regarding recce. Originally there is recce on Saturday and Sunday one weekend before. As we were going so far, we have asked for excuse to do it on Wednesday instead. I was very surprised how many crews were doing illegal recce during that day, we have seen many cars on both ways going through the stages many, many times. And they were not covering it, they were using regular pacenotes, same car for recce etc. As I dont know so many belgian drivers, I have recognized Melissa, but there was much more crews. And organisers were in same time preparing the stages and this drivers were going normally around them...

Interesting situation was also, that parc ferme (also for each regouping) and podium was in Spa, 11 km from service. So crews were going many times to Spa, I think 7-8 times they were going through podium. There were very short times for liaison, so lot of crews were going faster on liaison than on stages. Also when SS 3 was cancelled and crews should go alternative route, roadbook was not so precise and showed only a map, so most of the crews were lost and was forced to use GPS in their mobiles to reach the service.

I was also surprised how time controls were working, especially around regrouping, but also in some other parts. You can arrive few minutes earlier or few minuters later, they will write you "correct" time to your time control and you have no penalty...

Also starting to circuit stages was crazy, there was one timekeeper showing on hands one minute intervals and another marshall close to the road with RED FLAG noticing, if the road is clear. How this can happen? Red flag in rallying actually means cancelled stage, so it should be easy for the crews to see that flag and stop the stage. But crews were used to this and absolutely ignore him. But this two marshalls were not so much synchronised, few times I have seen it was close to crash. I was quite surprised that there is no GPS tracking mandatory in Belgium, which is standard in most of the championships this year. I have also didnt found official noticeboard, only on internet. So for digging starting times to first leg I have used usual step - was going to TC 0 and waited when timekeeper will receive his start list. Funny was in second leg, when my crew started earlier than was on start list, timekeeper asked them to go earlier as some of cars in front of them didnt started...

Safety is usual problem in Belgium, as I have heard. I know that Ypres is different, more strict. Here people can be almost everywhere, marshalls quiet and working precisely only on some places. I have seen many photographers making pictures of playing with mobile than watching what is happening on stage. In lot of situations people were standing on very bad places.

Regarding the crews, the best one was Kris Princen, quite slower on circuit stages, but he should win without problems (if no puncture). Then there was Ghislain de Mevius and Fernemont, who was biggest surprise for me. He was really fast, especially on circuit stages, but also fast on normal stages. Other from the top didnt impressed so much. Patrick Snijers with Porsche was great, sound of his car on the circuit stages was amazing and he did exactly what is necessary with that car. I was quite disappointed by the R2 drivers. The best was without any doubts Gregoire Munster, with almost no experience with R2 car he was really good, precise in driving, not so many mistakes. Another noticeable was younger Dilley with Fiesta R2T, he was fast, but all the time too much aggressive and making so many mistakes, especially when the event was going to the finish. Rest of R2 was nothing special... Special notice should be for Daco with historic Escort, nice to watch and also setting good times.
