Loix out with broken gearbox after stage 7... It was a great 3-way fight with Princen and Verschueren, all 3 within about a second overall. Kobus and Allart not far off either in 4 and 5 (now 3 and 4). Good rally.

What did Van Woensel do to lose time? He was right up there as well in the beginning.

They are really pushing on the twisty tarmac roads! You can see it is a close battle!

Back from a great East Belgian Rally. Yesterday we had one of the biggest fights ever in Belgian rallying. On the first 6 stages, 6 different drivers (5 different cars) each set one quickest time (Loix-FabiaR5, Princen-208R5, Verschueren-DS3R5, Kobus-FabiaR5, Van Woensel-LancerWRC, Allart-Fabia WRC). After 6 stages both Loix and Van Woensel retired with mechanical problems, while Allart started losing more and more time. So the battle for the victory continued between Princen, Verschueren and Kobus, it lasted until the very last stage. The difference between 1st and 2nd has never been bigger than 2,3 seconds... Congratulations to Hermen Kobus, well deserved victory, he also proved that the Kumho tyres must be very good, as he was nearly as quick as Loix in the same car, and could beat equally fast Princen-208R5. Verschueren was a nice surprise, in Omloop van Vlaanderen he already set a few fastest stage times, but now he really proved that he has a place among the top drivers in Belgium, it took a long time with the DS3R5, but he's finally there. :) Some photos of the event will follow later.

Nice stages, relaxed or no marshalls and a great battle.

Lefebre wins first stage, closely follwed by Princen. Lefebre had a small off on this stage: https://instagram.com/p/9xofDKvh1m/

WRC are far behind on this first stage. Even Cherain was quicker in his R5 (he is now running in an WRC).

HaCo

Cherain is on a charge now, won both 2nd and 3th stage with quite a margin. Quite impressive. CVW already 42secs behind.

Battle in R5 will be between Princen en Lefebre, with Verschueren/Bouche not far away. Bouche needs time to adapt to R5 I think.

I think this is one of the best to come over for, shakedown on friday, 2 days of rallying or Ypres.

Looks like an awesome event. If I lived a bit further south in the UK I'd be over in Belgium all the time spectating.

What is the best event in the championship to go and watch?

There are 9 events in the Belgian Rally Championship, all quite familiar to me as I've done every event each year in the last 9 seasons. For me only 3 events could be worth traveling abroad for. Wallonie (held in end of april or early may), Ypres (end of june) and Condroz (beginning of november).

My N°1 recommendation would be Ypres. For people from UK it's the least far, and it has the best entry list BY FAR, not in quantity but in quality. There are always plenty of R5/S2000 cars with great drivers, from ERC and from Belgium (partly championship drivers but also many one-shots). Also the R2 category is always interesting in Ypres, especially now with the Junior ERC. When there's some gap in the timing you can see the historic cars if you are lucky. The organisation is the best in Belgium, as it's on ERC level. For the stages it's something personal, I like the Ypres stages more and more every year. You must like some really fast action, you will not see the cars go extremely sideways like in Condroz, but the speed is very impressive on many places. What you see from the R5 drivers (Loix, Abbring, Bouffier, Lefebvre, Breen etc) is just amazing, and in my opinion more impressive to see than tarmac action from WRC cars. The R5 cars are just more entertaining to watch, especially on high speeds and on bumpy roads. In terms of timing it's quite easy to see something like 8 stages on the event (friday and saturday).

N°2 for me is Condroz. The event is stretched over 3 days. There's a long shakedown on friday afternoon (from 12 to 17 O'Clock), on saturday and sunday the actual stages are run. The itinerary is probably easier than Ypres, if you want to see a lot of car and a lot of stages. In terms of entries, the list always looks impressive. A lot of great cars and some great names. The reality is often a bit different. During the event you see that a lot of those big WRC cars aren't so spectacular because the drivers aren't good enough or aren't used to the cars enough... In many cases it's more entertaining to watch an R3 or R2 car driven on the limit, than to watch some WRC car being driven on 80% of it's capabilities (with all respect to those drivers). The biggest disadvantage of Condroz is the organisation, they are quite useless compared to other events this big. The crowds are huge. I've been on most European WRC events that are on the current calendar, and I've never seen such big crowds (not just on a public area, but really on every corner of the rally) like in Condroz. The organizers can't handle the number of people (sometimes drunk), which causes very dangerous situations almost comparable to the images you've seen from the Group B era... I'm often wondering how it's possible there aren't more accidents with spectators, fortunately they are very rare... Also due to the big number of spectators it's not the easiest event to spectate. There are a lot of cars moving between the stages, often causing traffic jams, and on all access roads there are a lot of cars parked, if you arrive a bit late you usually have to do some long walk before you get to the stage.

N°3 for me is Rallye de Wallonie. A nice long event (in SS kms I think it was the longest Belgian event this year), with very good itinerary. One stage on friday night on the Citadelle de Namur (even without a rallycar it's a nice place to visit https://scontent-bru2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/t31.0-8/11206779_1066326486712570_2255110411669882519_o.jp g). On saturday they usually drive 4 different stages 3 times, making it easy to see 6 stages that day. On sunday there are usually 2x5 stages in the last few years, making it easy to see 4 stages. Regarding entries, it's always less than Condroz, but getting better and better every year. This year the entry list was very nice. Also there was a nice battle where 4 drivers with very different cars (an R5, a S2000, a 1.6 WRC and a 2L WRC) were fighting for the win until the last stages. :) Talking about the organisation, it's the same problem as in Condroz... Fortunately Rallye de Wallonie doesn't have the big reputation as Condroz, and the number of spectators is many times lower. The safety-issue you see in Condroz is almost non-existant in Wallonie, but with some issues it's easy to have some delayed stages, more events are run with delay than without, in the region of Condroz and Wallonie... The stages themselves are very different from each other. Some are very nice, some are quite boring and have only few nice spots.

at 7,37 he was a bit angry with position of spectators.

Not only there... Unfortunately the organizers aren't taking up their responsibility.

https://scontent-bru2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/t31.0-8/12183742_517287808448258_5419000472956751899_o.jpg In 2003 a fatal accident happened on this jump, now people are still standing on the same dangerous positions as they were back then... (Photo by Sébastien Turkery)

It's a strange thing, the crowd is so big that it's uncontrollable, and in the end almost all spectators are at risk if they want to see the cars.

Yes. The one of Lefebvre in 2nd loop. In first loop I could take photos from the front on a place that was quite ok. On 2nd loop there were like 30x as much spectators and it became a very dangerous spot.

Great rally @ Huy this weekend, but with the typical problems about safety/traffic. The organisation doesn't seem motivated to fix this problems, this is probably the biggest problem.

According to AUTOnews magazine (http://www.autonews-magazine.com/blog/?p=44168 ) WRC cars are (almost) banned for next year's BRC. It's known that organizers of some events didn't agree with banning the cars completely, so the RACB (federation) didn't ban them. Now they made some new rules... 1.6T WRC cars have to drive a 30mm restrictor (so they're like RRC used to be until now). Also for 2.0 WRC cars (they are still allowed) there shall be a rule making it forbidden to drive one if you have won a BRC rally in the past. In my country people like to make simple things complicated (not only for rallying), for me personally WRC cars should have been forbidden since 2007 or 2008 already, when the first S2000 cars were available.

why Loix parted ways with BMA?

The reason is officially unknown. Loix is working together with 2C Competition a lot, when doing tyre development tests for Michelin. So he knows the team very well and they know him, in 2012 and 2013 they had a very good cooperation (2012 in France with 207 S2000 and 307 WRC, 2013 with Focus WRC in Belgium). Thanks to all the testing work it's a good opportunity for Freddy and 2C to gather experience with the car. Logically it's more difficult to take anything from those tests to another team, apart from what you can remember as a driver.

Who is "they", and do you have any price quote maybe? In 2012 and 2013 half of the car was in colors of "Groupe Combronde" (big transport company that is family of the owner of 2C Competition), it could be the case again this year. Then you are not just a customer, you are somehow sponsored by them. I think it can be a bit more complex situation when things are not going like the driver/codriver and other sponsors want things to go. In normal conditions (which is not losing money on your business) I think it's very difficult for a team from Southern France to be (a lot) cheaper than BMA and still deliver a decent Fabia R5 and service like BMA did.

Full entrylist for Haspengouw Rally, first rally of the Belgian Championship:
http://trch.be/index.php/deelnemers/startlijst

Vanwoensel is the top favorite with the only WRC car, a Lancer 05.

There are 10 R5 cars:
Loix (Fabia), Princen (208) and Cherain (Fiesta) will be the main challengers for Vanwoensel. It should be interesting to watch the differences between the 3 cars on tarmac, the drivers are quite evenly matched.
Demaerschalk (DS3) should be fast if he will start (not sure if car will be ready).
Verschueren (Fabia) uses his new car for the first time, he will need some time to get use to it.
De Jongh, Steveny, Serderidis, Van Rompuy (DS3), Benoit (Fiesta) are the other R5 cars.

There is a Mini WRC at the start too, but with an RRC restrictor and in RC2. That is a new (and very strange) rule this year, to prevent an easy win with a WRC1.6.

Junior championship will not be very interesting this year (as boring as last year probably).

Historic is better, with several "new generation" historics coming the next rallies: Legacy's, Celica, Sierra, M3 E30, Mazda 323 etc...

Finally there is BMW Cup on selected rounds and there is also a sort of "second division" championship on the same rallies.

It was a nice rally! Not the best stages of the championship, but a nice rally anyway :)

Princen and Loix had a great fight all rally long. At the end, Loix pushed a bit more and won. But the small differences promise an interesting fight for the title :)
Verschueren was a lot faster then I thought, needed little time to adjust to the Fabia. For sure an outsider for the title! Was lucky when the rear left wheel bearing (or something else) broke at high speed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYjRNO_fkM4 . After this incident, he finished 4th.
Cherain (Fiesta R5) was a disappointment to me. Not quick enough to fight for the top 3 and retired at the end after a small mistake.
De Jongh (DS3 R5) drove a solid rally finishing 5th, nice addition to the championship!
Steveny (DS3 R5) crashed on the first stage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TudX47rJS4
Serderidis (DS3 R5) on the second one after a compression, images are here already.
Finally, Van Rompuy (DS3 R5) retired with a broken rim and driveshaft, I don't know if he went off.
EDIT: forgot Benoit (Fiesta R5), says enough about his rally... Finished 9th overall behind 2 BMWs.

Vanwoensel was fastest with his Lancer WRC, but once again, the car was too fragile. He lost time and got a penalty, resulting in 3th.
Kenis drove a Mini WRC with RRC restrictor (yes, crazy Belgian rules). He had a good rally finishing 6th.

Next is Spa rally 18-19/03, nicer stages and probably better entry list too :)

Loix wins every year like Ogier in the WRC.

We'll have to wait and see for this year, the competition is stronger than ever (since the 90's maybe). Without the technical issues Van Woensel-Mitusbishi Lancer WRC would have won by the way. Also in the end Princen was only some 10s behind, it's not such a big gap... Last year Princen had a lot of bad luck, and retired many times, but he was always on the same pace of Loix (if not quicker). Last year we had a few very exciting events, like Wallonie, where 4 drivers could win until the last few stages (and that was after the retirement of Princen and Lefebvre, who were also fighting strong). In the East Belgian Rally we had 3 drivers who could win until the last stage (there was some 5s difference between 1st and 3rd), the difference between 1st and 2nd hadn't been bigger than 2s all day long. Loix retired there while being 4th, I think. So no, Loix isn't dominating in the way Ogier is in WRC. Loix is probably the most consistent, he is extremely fast, and drives the most reliable car. I also think Freddy could have his toughest Ypres ever this year, even without a proper ERC field (I doubt any ERC driver could fight for podium anyway, as long as not too many Belgian drivers get in trouble).

For a while, 10.8 seconds over a whole day, is still close for Belgian norms. Btw Both have gentlement co drivers, but the notes of Loix are way more precise and more on time then with Princen (makes a small difference in seconds too). Loix won't be so dominating like the last few years. Last year he got it already tough on some rallies, mostly PSA broke down then or his own car broke down and Kobus won the East Belgian Rally (decided on last stage!).

With Loix you have to remember also that he was development driver of Skoda R5, he done many, many kms with it, so he knows the car very well. Also knows the 2C team very good. And he is also development driver for Michelin, so knows tires very good, which also is an advantage (in Van Haspengouw he was using different tires than others and it worked well for him looks like).

Princen will certainly win a rally this year. Also Verschueren, Cherain and Kobus might win one.
Last year Princen had a lot of bad luck. He had to retire after day 1 in Ypres, being in front of Loix because he was ill. In Wallonie slightly hit a concreet block which caused retirement, while Loix had a huge off in a ditch with no consequences at all. Title fight could have been a lot closer last year!

Tomorrow night and saturday there's the Spa Rally, 2nd round of the Belgian championship. Live results should be found here: http://www.sparally.com/nl/node/44

Bob De Jong already crashed on shakedown... 11 R5 cars left, also Mini RRC (with WRC wing), 2 Fabia WRC's and a few GT's. Marc Duez is entering a Porsche 997 GT3 from Romain Dumas. Some good FWD cars as well, interesting entry is Gryazin with a 208 R2.

De Jong... https://scontent-amt2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtf1/v/t1.0-9/1917651_1053022084759224_6700305176083517222_n.jpg ?oh=88560a1b4d0150dafcd3daada650db87&oe=5791AB6E

I think Loix is going to win it. He has 23 seconds over Princen after SS10. Still 7 stages to go.

Very bad rally for Gryazin. He is 56th overall.

Cherain used to be faster. Don't know what's wrong with him this year.

Gryazin retired. He did some decent stages but lost huge time on others. Anyway in 2WD Hermann with his crazy Punto is different league than anyone else.

19th March 2016, 18:52
Gryazin continues, there was some mistake in the timing system when he was mentioned as retired for a while. He just set a great time in SS14 fastest of all FWD even ahead of crazy Hermann.

Looking at the results it's certainly not just a curious detail that Spa stages are close to Czech ones... 5 Škoda 4WD on start and all of them in top 8!

1. Loix (Fabia R5) 1:41:21,6
2. Princen (208 T16 R5) +39,9
3. Verschueren (Fabia R5) +2:31,5
4. Bouche (Fabia R5) +3:03,0
5. De Cecco (208 T16 R5) +3:33,2
6. Dilley (DS3 R5) +5:11,7
7. Allart (Fabia WRC) +5:43,4
8. Cunin (Fabia WRC) +8:48,0
9. Albert (Evo IX A8) +9:07,3
10. Martin (Evo IX A8) +9:19,1

Cherain (Fiesta R5), Demarschalk (DS3 R5) retired, De Jong (DS3 R5) crashed on shakedown.

Saw a great rally this weekend! Loix won again at the end, you can see on the stages that Princen attacks more but is slower in the end.
Excellent rally for Bouche (first time with Fabia R5), De Cecco (first time with a 4WD car) and Dilley (2nd rally in the car and looked very quick on the stages).
Cherain did bad times and retired early. Also De Maerschalk retired early on, a pity because he couldn't take much experience for the rest of the season.

Seen a very nice rally, I think we've seen the best stages used in Belgium in many years. For drivers probably the most demanding rally in many years. On friday there were some stages in the night. I think the first car (Loix) got in parc fermé around 1h30, and had to be back in the parc fermé around 7h30 in the morning, for another long day. Freddy was a bit too quick for Princen, let's hope Princen manages to gain some more speed for the next events. The stages were very fast and bumpy, I think the Skoda R5 has an advantage with this stage profile.

There's a good chance François Duval is going to drive Rallye de Wallonie with a Skoda Fabia WRC. It will be interesting to measure the speed of the old 2L WRC against the most modern R5 cars. :) In a dry Rallye du Condroz 2 years ago Solberg-C4 and Princen-S12B were not much faster than Meeke-DS3 R5, Cherain-Fiesta R5 and Loix-Fabia S2000...

I still owe you all a little report, but I don't have much time. So very briefly:

We started in a cup, called the Pinto Cup, 7 Escorts MKI/II were at the start, all with a Pinto 2l engine.

We decided to take it easy the first loop as it was my first rally as a co-driver. But we managed to take the lead from the first stage! First 2 loops were very close, after 8 stages and +-90km we had a lead of just over 12s on second place. Overall, we were in the top 10 Historic too, in front of several faster cars (Porsches, top Opel 2.4l, Escort BDA etc)
In the third loop, our opponent made a mistake and we were able to bring our advantage to 45s, despite some mechanical troubles in the last 2 stages.

We managed to fix these in service but left with the wrong tyres. Rain came on the last 2 stages. First one we went off, damaging the car but we were able to continue. We had 18s advantage before the last stage, but a broken windscreen wiper right from the start, meant we lost first place by 4.1s...

A disappointment, but we have to be happy with 7th overall in Historic. It was my first, but certainly not my last rally!

Last weekend there was also a historic and regional event, named "Rallye Salamandre", the stages were in the region of the old "Bianchi Rally", a well-known event back in the 80's and 90's. The historic event counted for a British tarmac historic championship, which was nice. Swiss driver Florian Gonon won with his Escort MK1, only 1s ahead of Stefaan Stouf (Porsche 911).

Also in Belgium this weekend was the rallysprint of the Monteberg. It's a small rally with 4x1ss. The rally takes place in Dranouter, not far from Ypres. Some parts from the ss are also used during the Ypres rally (most in opposite direction).

Not so many talented drivers at the start. We had Snijers with a Mini WRC, Delplace (last year in Ypres/Barum with a Swift S1600) with the Porsche that Snijers drove in 2015, some locals with Lancers, some british/dutch teams and a lot of rwd (bmw, escorts,...).

During the second round Snijers had problems with the mini and lost a lot of time. Pyck (evo 10) won the rally. Nice 3rd place for Calcoen with an escort rs 1600.

As a promotion for the Ypres rally you could win a drive with Loix in a Opel Kadett when you bought a ticket for the Ypres rally. The orange Opel Kadett is famous in Flancers because it's used in a popular tv show (about farmers who grow weed :)). A lot of public showed up (taking the bad weather into account), nice promotion for the rallysport.

Loix mentioned during a interview that they don't have to be afraid from the foreign drivers during the Ypres rally. 'The level off rallying in the brc hasn't been that high since years.'

Yes! I think he is the first driver to use it in competition?

Might be, I posted a pic in the R5 topic of his test. Will be interesting how much of a difference it will make. Dilley and Duval are supposed to have the Evo kit for their DS3s too, don't they?

A bit of a surprise, Duval is leading with almost 10s on Loix, Princen and Bouche.

Princen fastest on the first real stage. Is the Peugeot update working? I hope so for an exciting 2016 championship!

I don't know. It's the "retired" Duval who wins most of the stages! He leads with almost 40-second advantage over Fast Freddy. But is Freddy still fast? ;)

That's why I'm asking. His times are barely better than those of drivers he used to easily defeat in previous events.

Duval still leads after 15 stages. But it's a long rally - 10 stages still to go. The crazy Hermann and his Punto HGT already in 10th position, in front of many GT, R5 and WRC cars! :)

Duval has done it again... he crashed in SS17. Also Verschueren and Dilley loosing over minute.

I guess Loix decided it was the easiest way to win this rally - wait until everybody else crashes ;)

With such actions Duval is closing personaly the doors at teams&sponsors for a seat in a rally car. There is no excuse (except technical reason) for crashing when you have everything under control.

It was a very rainy day, with los of retirements. Princen and Duval unfortunately went off, so Loix can cruise to another Victory. The title steeds to be decided already...

Lot of mechanical problems for the ds3 r5's. Demaerschalk, Leonard, Scaillet retired, Dilley drove slowly on the last stage.

At the end of the day, quite a poor day of rallying for us...

We also didn't have the best day of rallying this year, probably the worst. Few stages we missed Loix and Duval, some bad spots, only few fast drivers. Not the best Rally Wallonie we went to haha, but Joost his video is pretty decent again ;)

Finish:

1. Loix (Fabia R5) 2:10:20,9
2. Bouche (Fabia R5) +44,4
3. Verschueren (Fabia R5) +46,1
4. Allart (Fabia WRC) +2:14,4
5. Baugnet (Fiesta R5) +3:51,9
6. Fernémont (Fiesta R5) +3:59,6
7. Collard (Evo X) +6:25,6
8. Hermann (Punto HGT) +10:59,1
9. Bouvy (997 GT3) +11:17,1
10. Van Rompuy (DS3 R5) +13:32,4

All top four for Škoda, disaster for PSA with the top scoring driver being only 10th overall...

Duval without Evo spec, only Princen had it.
Van Woensel - propshaft
Some cars were slowed down by marshalls after accidents of Princen and Duval, that's why they drowe slow and lost lot of time (then they got notional times). Not best event for PSA cars (4 crashed, rest mechanical), but on the other hand results showed that with good drivers like Princen or Duval they can be faster than Skoda. Duval was driving very fast and went out on well known place.
Loix didn't need to push and he perfectly controlled the situation. Nice fight for 2nd spot.

Sezoensrally in Bocholt this weekend. 5th rally of the Belgian Championship already.
As always, entrylist is not as good as other rallies in the championship.
Loix (Fabia R5) and Princen (208 R5) as favorites again.
Snijers (Fiesta R5) might finish on the podium, but I think Verschueren (Fabia R5) will be faster. Wright (Fiesta R5) should be 5th fastest. Van Rompuy and Serderidis (DS3 R5) and Kenis (Mini WRC with RRC restrictor) are the other top entries.

Entrylist: http://www.sezoensrally.be/nl/deelnemers/ "Deelnemers Nationaal"

I will be the codriver of Erwin Mombaerts, former WRC/ERC codriver with Abbring, Kuzaj, Van Merksteijn, Kuipers, VW test drivers etc. He will compete in his second rally this weekend in a Fiesta ST.

If Loix/Princen/Verschueren don't have problems, top 3 will not be possible i think. In 2014 he drove a Fiesta R5 during '6 uren van Kortrijk'. Then he was 4th after Verschueren (DS3 R5), Casier (Fiesta R5), Lefevere (Lancer X R4).
