Does anyone use this type of web service, e.g. flickr, Webshots?

I’ve been uploading my photos to Webshots for years but it’s now in the process of migrating to something called “Smile” which appears to lack many of the features of its predecessor. So I’m looking for an alternate, somewhere where I can upload photos and share them in private. Webshots was handy because a user was able to organize photos into albums which could then be shared by emailing the link.

I have a flickr account but rarely use it. I get the impression that once uploaded, photos are available in the photostream with no restrictions.

Any recommendations?

I have an old Flickr account which, but I don't have the slightest idea what the password/login name combo is. :)

Nowadays I use either google+ for family stuff and Dropbox for sharing stuff online.

No. You can set pictures to either: Public, Friends, Family, Friends & Family, Only you.

So if you want you and you alone to be able to view your pictures then you just set them all to fully private and nobody will be able to see a thing. But you'd still be able to share selected photos and sets if you wanted to. And you can create 'Guess Passes' which allow restricted access to certain parts of the site - It's all very customisable.

Thanks for the feedback.

I’m basically looking for a secure site where I can upload photos, organize them into albums/folders that I can then e-mail to others. Many of my pics are of my family and kids which I don’t want available to the general public.

I’ll poke around in flickr a bit more.

We use flickr precisely because you can set privacy settings. Our family are scattered across Europe so its useful to share photo updates and you can select who sees what. We do pay an annual subscription though.

Yeah, I noticed there's an "upgrade" option on flickr. What do you get with this?

With the 'pro' account you can upload more pictures and have more sets (I think, among other things). I've got a pro-account because I was uploading quite a lot of rallying stuff, although I'm currently in the process of going back through and thinning out a lot of the stuff.

Yeah, I just checked the FAQ section and flickr allows a maximum of 300MB of photo uploads per month. That’s plenty for me. I don’t see any mention of limits on sets though...

For several years I've been using ImageVenue to store photos that I post on message boards and what not. I don't upload truly personal photos anywhere though (I've heard too many horror stories over the years). Someone recently told me that when they clicked on my thumbnails, they got pornographic popups from ImageVenue. If that's happened to anyone here, I apologize. I haven't had that happen to me and I'm not sure why it might have happened to others. If people here are suggesting Flickr, maybe I'll start using that. Does anyone know of any issues with that one?

I think the 300mb limit is for free accounts. I don't think you can download full res versions on the free account either. Pro is cheap about £12 a year I think.

I use SkyDrive, I got in before they cut the free allowance from 25GB to 7GB for new free users. It integrates nicely with Windows Live Photo Gallery, and I figured that of all the providers Microsoft are among the least likely to go bankrupt anytime soon and take all my photos with them. I've also got some backup up on Picassa, and physical backups on and off the premises of the really important ones!
