Just booked my flights to Stockholm, for the Rally. Doing Thursday-Sunday. Was thinking of going with rallytravel but it works out quite expensive with just 2 people. So where is the best place to stay and be central for Friday and Saturday's stages? Would be nice to get a hot tub ;) but looking at spending 100 euros per night for a room, is this reasonable? How much is the Rally Pass roughly? Which are the best spots/stages to visit? Do the hire cars come with winter tyres, and are the roads fairly clear of snow. Sorry for my ignorance, but i've never visited Sweden before! Very excited and can't wait :)

Many thanks in advance for any advice!

We once stayed here: Hedegrds Pensionat, nederlands, herfstvakantie, paddestoelen (http://www.hedegardspensionat.com/) .
Really good, we had a house provided by them, but they also have rooms around their own house.
Warm meal every night in the dining area. Team of Prokop was also staying there :)

What I can see there´s nothing new, so I kind of agree. But the rally itself can be spectacular in many ways depending on road surfaces and weather.

Göteborg is even further away then Arlanda. ;)

But as said previously by others, I think Gardemoen would be his best bet.
Ryanair does only fly to/from Standstead/Alicante from Västerås.

We're flying Brussels (Zaventem) - Stockholm (Bromma), wednesday-monday. Price was between 100-130 euros, depending on when you booked. Perhaps a little bit more expensive than Ryanair, but 12kg hand-baggage (in stead of 10) and 23kg baggage (in stead of 15), and numbered seats... Especially more baggage is useful when you're going to a winter-event with already hand-baggage full of photo-gear... :)

2013. will be my 3rd time visiting rally Sweden and I have to say that itinerary isn't really friendly for spectators. Actually I'm a bit disappointed because every year the same stages with some small changes. Not much places to choose from. For example Sagen stage is really great, but you can reach it only from start or finish. 2 years ago we tried to drive the small road which leads to the middle of the Sagen stage, but when it was about 10 km to go the road just ended as the snow wasn't removed from the road.
Anyway it's specific only for winter rallies and I still can't wait to go there and will always appreciate information about the great spots from local rally fans.

Yeah I agree, and also stages are almost always in the same order.

I guess that has to do with cost saving that it is too expensive to have more/new stages.

I also definitely think that they need one more stage per loop for Friday and Saturday so that there is at least one full "dark" stage.

There were talks this year having the rally more down in Dalarna picking up some old stages from the 90´s, but then nothing happened. I agree fully, the stages of RS isn´t exciting anymore. (Except for Colin´s crest - and being there just walk about one k against start and there are som very good bends and jumps)

Could it be related to that Fortifikationsverket decided that no sportsactivity was allowed on their land anymore?

Previously the military had owned their own land and sports activity on it have not been a problem.
However now Fortv. have taken over all land owned by the millitray and they decided that no sportsactivity
was allowed on their land anymore.

I know Rally Organizers wanted to have a sprint rally during the cross-country skiing week in Falun. However Fortv. said no.

No, I don´t think so. Two different cases. Local newspapers did believe that some new stages (from 90´s) would come out of new agreements with municipalitys in Dalarna.

The other way around for us living in the eastern parts of sweden. Norway the first day isn´t best solution for us. Now we can watch two days and being at home on saturday evening in time. Last day two years ago by the way, everything was setled and nothing really happened, only minus 26 degrees I recall.

I totally agree!

Every year lots of norwegians are coming to Sweden, but when it was Rally Norway and last year with the friday stages in Norway only a few swedes travelled to Norway.
The organizers in Norway loose at lot of income.

I am quite sure that on 2013-sunday stages in Norway it will not be many swedish flags.

It was there this year too I think? ;) Kirkener 1 and 2 are in the same leg, so what's the problem? With rally2 you can only restart in the leg after the one retired... ;)

Oh! Nice piece of information. But I knew it already, I'm not really a beginner anymore... :)

I try to make my point clear.

If Kirkenaer2 starts only an hour after Kirkenaer1 started, with more than 30 cars it would impossible.

So, either they expect a very low number of entries or there is no super rally rule (rally2 rule).

Or it's a relatively short stage.

Or it's a long stage, but the start and the finish are actually very close to one another geographically.

Maybe they do the same like Wales 2011, when at the Great Orme stage the 2 runs were mixed up, so when the second run began the 2 stages ran at the same time, with someone from the first stage starting in front of the first of the second stage and so on..

Nope, 2012 Kirkener 1 start was 10.03 - Leg 1. Kirkener 2 start was 13.23 - Leg 2.

I believe it will be a compositing or typo error as only 1 hour between the 2 runs would make no sense in an event like Sweden

There is 1h13mins between. It's a short kind of superspecial-stage. From onboard all spectators were on one side of the stage. So let's assume they don't need to run a 0-car between both runs. If they let first 15 cars run every 2 minutes, and others every minute, with some small margin, let's say they can still have 45-50 cars then. And this year they had 54 entries... Quite strange indeed, but if there are not more entries next year, it is possible...

Ok that might be possible, as the stage is run in bicycle paths of Kirkenaer, but still there's places where offs might happen (as we all know from 2012) and stuck the stage. These could easily ruin the schedule. Quite a risk, I think.

But the more important question is still to be answered, super rally rule or no?

SubaruNorway
13th December 2012, 18:21
Not on bicycle paths but between the river and the bank to prevent flooding. Not much to see unless you can manage to sneak into the forest somewhere.WRC Onboards: Norway 2009: Mathew Wilson SS09 - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2XYf3ZVD1M&feature=plcp&context=C393003cUDOEgsToPDskKFt75MtRG1wzVeJjcqABvE )

Yes, there will be Rally 2 next year (super rally)

Sami

I meant "bicycle paths", that is very small and narrow roads. I've been in Kirkenaer twice, stand the on the bank. But this year I'll be in Finnskogen again, no question about that. :)

PLuto, were have you been reading that Tidemand talks with M-Sport for a drive in a Fiesta WRC for Rally Sweden???
If it's true, I hope i can raise money! He has already drive a Fiesta WRC on test here in Sweden. That was Ingemar Svenssons Fiesta WRC.

Well we know about his family connections and good luck to the guy for wanting to drive in his home rally but does anyone else think this is a case of running before he walks? His performances in the 2012 academy were not 'sit up and take notice' in the style of Breen and Kaur in 2011 or Evans in 2012. If this is going to be the career path of choice, henceforth, then I can easily see Evans getting a Fiesta WRC for Wales. Perhaps we need a thread to predict the best rookie result of 2013!

You don´t know anything about his performance in Swedish championship 2012 in his S2000 Fiesta, do you?

Or his strong performance in Evenrally Fabia S2000 ;)

His first drive in WRC Academy and with some bad luck, he show that with right support, he will be a really good rallydriver in the top 10....
In Sweden and Norway there isent any real tarmac rallys because of tragic accident in the past so Pontus showed this year that he anyway with a lack of experiense is fast on tarmac, and on gravel Pontus is as fast as Evans and the other guys!

Pontus is a great young rallydriver with a goal! Watch out! ;)

True, I don't Per - who was he beating and in what machinery? As for the line about lack of tarmac experience - Evans wasn't exactly familiar with the blackstuff pre-2012. On snow and ice he should be able to make the most of his experience but I'm willing to bet a large number of beers that when they face off in equal machinery that Evans will always be quicker - do we have a wager?

Finland it is but it isn't going to be 2013 as Evans won't be in a WRC car until GB at the earliest. Of course I'm happy to accept head to head in WRC2 on gravel if it happens anywhere. My itinerary for the next 20 months is. Germany 2013. GB 2013 MC 2014 Finland 2014 and possibly Ypres or San Marino in 2013. But the prize can be claimed whenever we get to meet up in future ;)

For first car:
Thursday:
Parc Fermé Karlstad in at 20:44

Friday:
Parc Fermé Karlstad out at 06:10
Parc Fermé Karlstad in at 19:40

Saturday:
Parc Fermé Karlstad out at 06:15
Parc Fermé Hagfors in at 17:27-20:00 (flexi service, all cars must be in before 20:00)

Sunday:
Parc Fermé Hagfors out at 06:00

I said it earlier: about one and a half K before Colins Crest is a good part. From junction and onwards Colins crest (800m) there´s bends and good jump and then righthander where swedish ace Jonas Wigren went off two yrs ago.

Just take the turn before CC parking.

On Fredriksberg 200meters in stage direction from fourway junction at Mörttjärn (about 4,5 K into the stage) good place watching the cars for about one K in nice bends.

Jepp, that´s the one! As you can see there are some slow corners where the touristdrivers use to go off just before the crest. I´d say it very spectacular just after the jump as well.

Ransbysätter at Vargåsen stage. Go to the right when you enter the stage.
Keep walking to an open areawith hamburgers and etc for sale, several bends at this area.
before (from a driver point of view) that area a sharp left hand turn over a small/narrow bridge.
Before that a long downhill straight and before that a section with several lighter bends.
I don't remember but i think parking was at an organized parking and not on an access road.

Vargåsen, Sp.A. Älgtjärn, after the stage entry go right, continue walking up the long hill and
continue through/beyond the hairpin. You will get to a section with a large bend combination that
ends with a slight s-bend that leads to the hairpin. There were no trees except at the hairpin so
you can see the cars both in the bend-complex and during their "descent" down the hill ( I did not film it). See this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=7JshUr6bRTo&list=UU-Ks9UaD5qAK2HqYACbqTDw#t=277s).
Parking was at the access road so be early or be prepared to walk a looong distance.

I would like some advice about Rämmen. Anyone know any good
?

Rämmen:
Park close to last junction (Ulriksberg), go 500 m against the cars and you have a couple of good corners.
Begin with a left, then over crest and into a left to a right.

Vargåsen
3rd January 2013, 17:19
Nobody apparently?

A couple of suggestions from "my forests".

Vargåsen - Actually, I think the whole part between Sätterbäcken (Älgtjärn) and Ransbysätter is full of nice places, but a couple of favourites are the part around about 800 m before Colins Crest where a tight left-hander , "the suryp corner", followed by a right-hand corner over a couple of jumps, is a nice combination. The Colins Crest is spectacular when the drivers want to (like it was in 2011). There you want to stand ON the crest, because in the spectator crowd afterwards you won't see a lot. About 2km after the junction after Colins Crest, there is another nice place, Dunderängen (Thunder Meadow). Nice places where the road passes a house, Marius Aasen went of and parked in the door of a little ice cellar here in 2012.

Torsby - The spectator place in the middle of the stage at lake Björklången is nice.

Thanks to Juho Hänninen's announcement to drive in Sweden with Fiesta WRC (and also because of VW and Loeb), I was urged to get myself on the snowbanks of Rally Sweden, and that seems to be the case now, even if it was last minute. Let's hope Juho deliveres, we have the new flag prepared... I am a first timer for the rally, so if you feel like it, PM or post here as many tips as you like for places to spectate, move around between stages, etc. Thanks to those that have already helped.

Just in case you are still wondering whether to go or not, it looked that it's not impossible to find accomdation nearby Hagfors. Of course only few options, and those few are too counting out, but still not impossible, I think.

On Vargasen you have on Lövstaholm Larssäter different fast jumps where they jump sideways. Lovely place there.
On Sagen you have Lakotjam on the track go to the left arround the lake. A bit further there (at the lake ) is a large wide left hand corner. A lot of pilots hits the snow banks.
Frederiksberg, just before the FF.
Rämmen go to between the lake and Flasjön, different fast and very large corners, very slippy.

Samlingen ger 18 namn enligt nedan.

Citroen
Sebastien Loeb
Mikko Hirvonen
Daniel Sordo
Khalid Al-Qassimi

VW
Jari-Matti Latvala
Sebastien Ogier

Ford
Mats Östberg
Thierry Neuville
Evgeny Novikov
Juho Hänninen
Nasser Al-Attiyah
Jari Ketomaa
Martin Prokop
Eyvind Brynildsen
Pontus Tidemand
Hasse Gustavsson

Mini
Jarkko Nikara
Michal Kosiuszko

I think it's wierd that Prodrive not has realised yet wich drivers who is going to drive for them this year.. I had hope for a full season with two good drivers, bit now it seems like we will see different drivers from evet to event.. Boring.

But for rally sweden, I think we will see some cool names in the entrylist when it's confirmed by FIA! I hope for Block and Atkinson, Breen, Paddon and more.

It's quiet about Sandell, but he is going to drive in Mads Ostbergs Adapta Fiesta wrc in a sprint rally here in sweden on the 26 of Januari. It's in the Swedish Championship in "sprint-rally".
Maby "prepping" for rally sweden? Who knows, but I dont think so because it's very very quiet about him and wrc....

Nothing is final yet with Richard Göransson, not heard a thing about him and rally sweden... But he will maby compete in this "sprint-rally" like Sandell but in what car, I dont know...

Tidemand will drive Ingemar Svenssons Fiesta WRC. That one that Svensson drives in the Swedish rally championship.

I like the list, from spectating point of view. A lot of WRC cars and s2000 cars. But somehow it is sad to see the lack of entrants in the back of the field, and that is everywhere. In Sweden there are only 3 completely Swedish crews (meaning both driver and codriver are Swedish)...

Normally there are lots of private swedish and norwegian teams. But this year there are a national championship event in both countries the weekend before. Vinterpokalen(Sweden) and Rally Finnskog(Norway).
The privateers cant finance both the national event and then a WRC-event some days after.

Just as I feared with Opaker not being run this year. Typical.

As Kielder says, its Opaker. The best stage during the Norway run on sunday is Finnskogen. Several access roads into the stage, always a lot of people on the stage and many nice places for spectating. Also the Mitandersfors stage is very good. The last half of the stage is run in Norway and this is the famous Varaldskogen stage from the Finnskog Rally. Regrettably only one accessroad into the stage, but its a good and wide accessroad with good spectator capacity, appr. after 18-19 km of the stage. A nice place really with a fast left into an open hairpin right.

The promo video is nice to look at it but other than that it's a mess. I've been going through a lot of promo videos in the last month and I've seen a fair share of great ones.

I've got a few questions.
What's with the woman in the beginning?
What's with cooking food?
What's with the concert?
What's with the snowmobile stunt?
Who are they targeting - people who just want to have a party?
Why no voice over? Most people go do other things during the commercial breaks.

So quite a few questions that popped up in my head. I do understand that all that is related to the rally but like quite many commercials lately they don't seem to have a enough focus.

Oh yeah, and isn't the true party at the stages?

One question, where is number 3? :)

Loeb is driving AND nominated for Citroen AD, together with Hirvonen
teams can nominate maximum 2 drivers, so Sordo is 3rd wheel on the bike/ 5th wheel on the car
So Sordo is supporting Al Qassimi in scoring point for Abu Dhabi C.

Any update on road surface / snow condition as yet from locals?
Likelihood of conditions to be for the rally?

No too much snow right now. Between 10-20 cm. But it is very cold right now (around -20 in next few days). warmer weather, rain and snow is expected at the end of January.

This weekend it was running the local competition Finnskogsvalsen that went around the forests of Torsby.
Not much snow but ice on the road and really frosen roads.
Photos available on ...::: Rallyfoto.se :::... (http://www.rallyfoto.se). Select "Visited Contests" and then "Finnskogsvalsen 130119"
Hope it will get a little more snow so it will be properly snowbanks before the competition begins.

Does not look like it at the moment. Cold and subzero temperatures for another week but then a change
to warmer weather with temperatures above zero and possible even some rain.

omg, unbelievable the number of 940 and 960!!! didn't know you could do rally with them!
my parent used to owe one (they know have an xc70 thank god) and i didn't want them to drop me at school because i was so ashamed! if i knew it was such a good base for rally car, i would have begged them not to sell it! although it was a diesel, so might not be so good!
thanks for sharing the pics anyway! what a nice country sweden...

They are very popular. Cheap to buy(?), plenty of cheap parts, reliable, strong-built, good engines , rwd (=plenty of fun).

There are even a championship for Volvo cars: VOC Mekonomen Rally (http://volvooriginal.com/)
