Chinese tyres show how bad qualitiy they are made of

I think the main reason actually is that Evgeni chose to take no spare tires at all, so he couldn`t change to better ones between the stages..
At least this is what I heard!

He had one spare as written in the steward decision (5 soft tyres). I think that You can't leave service park without spare wheel, can You?

I think stage 17 prove what a fantastic car the MINI is and what a fantastic driver Sordo is. Prodrive and Sordo have only done a few rallys this year and hardly any testing at all. Still they keep up with a maximum attack Latvala and a pushing Loeb in factory Fiesta and DS3.

Despite lack of power against the factory cars the MINI is just as fast. I would say Prodrive together with Ohlins have done their homework with the chassi since the S14.

Irish Rally driver, Craig Breen has clenched the SWRC (Super 2000 World Rally Championship) in heroic style today on the final day of World Rally Spain. In doing so Breen secures consecutive world rally titles after winning the inaugural FIA WRC Academy Championship twelve months ago. The twenty-two year old suffered the severest blow of his career in June when his best friend and former co-driver, Gareth Roberts, was killed in an accident on IRC Rally, Targa Florio.

The Waterford driver made a comeback on World Rally Finland in August and on the closing three SWRC rounds (Wales Rally Gb, World Rally France and World Rally Spain) of the season stamped his authority on the championship claiming a hat trick of wins. This weekend he also completes World Rally Spain in 6th overall, equalling Sebastien Ogier’s record of the highest overall finish of an S2000 car in the 2012 World Rally Championship.

After taking a commanding advantage on day one of this weekend’s event which saw the Ford driver hold an overnight lead of 3 minutes 41 seconds, Breen adopted a marking tactic over the Saturday and Sunday stages. Controlling from the front, the Irish driver kept his arch rival, Swede, P-G Andersson at arm’s length, covering every attack while preserving his car all the way through to a flourishing finish. At the conclusion of the eighteenth and final stage, a euphoric Breen was overcome with joy for winning the title but also reflected on the huge loss during the summer..

“Incredible, I can’t believe it, you know I’ve had questions about if I’m making the correct decision. But for reasons I can’t explain that wanted me to get back in a rally car immediately, and I think this confirms it all. You know, we were meant to be here, we were meant to win this title and I’m so happy to have pulled it off.”

Citroen will decide between Mads Ostberg and Dani Sordo to partner Mikko Hirvonen in next year's FIA World Rally Championship - and could make the announcement tonight.

The all-conquering French squad is looking for a new recruit following nine-time world champion Sebastien Loeb’s decision to go part time in 2013. It has narrowed its search to Ostberg and Sordo.
Ostberg, from Norway, finished fourth in this year’s title standings subject to final ratification on the back of his maiden victory in Portugal in April at the wheel of a privateer Ford Fiesta RS WRC.
Spaniard Sordo, who left Citroen for MINI at the end of 2010, has tackled a partial campaign this season but demonstrated his pace with six stage wins on RallyRACC-Rally de Espana, which brought the curtain down on the WRC season earlier today.
“It will be between Mads Ostberg and Dani Sordo,” Citroen team chief Yves Matton (pictured) confirmed. “We wanted to wait until the result of the last rally. The decision will not be taken on the result of one rally. They have both impressed me.”

At the completion of the final stage today, Sordo said: “I don’t know for next year. I am in discussions with Citroen but I don’t know. I know Mads is pushing really hard. We can both do a good job for the team so good luck to both.”
Ostberg said: “We are talking to Citroen and Ford and MINI. I think we have a strong possibility of being in a good team and having a good season next year.”

Congrats to Seb Elena for their 76th win.
Congrats to Nikara for a clever aproach at his wrc chance, at an 70% asphalt rally.Very good speed at gravel without testing, and sometimes good at asphalt when trouble free.Definetely the youngster Finn with biggest potential at moment.
Some disapointments.....Mikko a whole year at best team with best car(Loeb haters say that) and i can t see any tarmac progress, neither on gravel. When he had to show speed just didn t happened.I mean better speed than at Ford.
Atkinson... there is no comparison with Atkinson we knew with Subaru.
Prokop no progress too.
Ostberg very good results for a privateer, and progress through the year.If he continue like that at next year will have future, specially if he manage to be a works driver with testing.
Tanak,we saw speed at last rallies, but we saw also a lot of offs.Waiting for more at last rallies.
Neuville another dissapointment till now.Was waiting to see his asphalt(at least) speed at Spain but...Next year he has to make results if he wants to have future.Tanak was with very little practice,Neuville had plenty..
Solberg..maybe is time for retirement for the sympathetic Petter.Very little speed, definetely out of his limits when he tried to be up with other factory drivers.
Latvala...not so good as i was waiting.Definetely the speed is there, but is not always. We dont know how much % responsibility has Msport in terms of giving him a good setup,or equipped him with proper tyres etc. Wish Vw to support him much better.
Ogier...very logic that he won every rally he participate. Some think that is an miracle, but imho was normal with this competition he had and with unlimited practice/budget this year.Next year will be very different.
Roll on Monte can t wait!!

Well. It was proper rally to end the season.
What suprised me the most was the fact that Citroen made so many wrong weather related decisions in one weekend. It is more that they have made during the whole year!
By the time of position picking it was clear that it is going to rain during the night and rain during the next day as well. But they chose the worst positions... Today it was pretty celar that it is not going to rain much in the afternoon stages.. just some isolated very light rainshowers and they took very starnge combinations of tyres... Loeb was not far from loosing his win thanks to that decision.
I think their weather team must have been in Salou beaches enjoying the ccompany of some Ford girls :-P

Solberg definitely have the speed in comparison to everone else except for Seb Loeb. Next year can still be a good year for PS if he calm down a bit. But I reccon we´ll have a new Seb destroying all the plans for other wrc-drivers in 2013.
Else I think you got it well sorted Dimviii! See you!

Weijs had plenty of mistakes at gravel and was lucky he managed to do the asphalt stages. One with the chopped tree, and the other one with the barrier.

Nice rally. shame to be so far away and having to follow on twitter and forum in the middle of the night, instead of being part of the crowd!!!
A bit disappointed by Mikko, doesn't seem to get it on Tarmac - However it seems that the fiesta has done a massive step forward performance wise on tarmac, especially on damp / dry / wet conditions. Considering latvala / otsberg / tanak pace...
Congratulations to Seb & Daniel obvisouly. By looking at the videos, he just has the perfect line on every corner, its unbelievable how precise and net he is all the time. Big respect.
Neuville as boring as ever. As somebody mentioned earlier, he'd better show some results early next year, otherwise his support from citroen will be cut and belgium will remain famous only for their beers.
Good rally from Latvala, shame he his only consistent AND fast the second half of the season generally.
Shame for Ostberg loosing the 3rd place in championship but it looks like he is sorted for a factory seat next season so look forward to see what his pace is with some additional testing and better support. (I'd like to see him in the DS3 personally)
Nice from Sordo to finish with plenty of stages win for Prodrive... IMO his only chances to win rally is if he goes to Ford. Otherwise at citroen, Loeb will do most of the Tarmac rally apparently leaving Sordo in the corner...
Novikov not impressed by DMack, not too sure we will see a DMack team next year!
Tanak, good speed obviously, but still young. 1 more season in a junior team and we will definitely see him more often on the podium.
Solberg... Everything has been said already I'm afraid...

Anyway, just wanted to share my point of view.

Can't wait for Monte Carlo now!!! 10 weeks... I have a huge respect for Loeb, but this new season without him just sound very promising and exciting!!!

At the hospital in Tarragona, we had a very bad accident yesterday and to be honest I don't remember a damn thing from yesterday except quick flashes during yesterday night, so I can't explain or even understand what happened! I have a head concussion, broken rib and all in all quite bruised in the whole body but after hearing how bad the accident was I think I was still quite lucky, and most important thing for me is that Morten is also OK! I could, but that would take some time...

It is also somewhat interesting that Ford this year has more stagewins than Citroen,
it probably means that Ford had an fast car and fast drivers but (team and drivers) did not use it well.

Alternatively it can mean that the Citroens were usually so far ahead after Day1 they could cruise to the end allowing Ford to set the majority of stage wins for 66% of the rally

Not sure my English am much betterer ;) (that's the problem with being a Londoner!) However, I thought that your point didn't need extensive calculation to prove what everyone has been able to see this year. Whether it was a crash or a tyre mis-management that left Citroen way out in front, Ford were allowed to drive like crazy while Loeb and Hirvonen (to a lesser extent) could afford 3rd and 4th best stage times for days 2&3 of most rallies.

dimviii
12th November 2012, 16:21
so i calculate this 17% of stage wins from Petter.(2012 championship)
I was remembering right i can say.
here we are...

Monte
ss11 win 1,24 min from Loeb
ss15 win 2,30 min from Loeb
ss16 win 2,37 min from Loeb
ss17 win 3.00min from Loeb

Sweden
ss9 win 20sec from Latvala
ss10 win 16,3 sec from Latvala

Mexico
ss1 street stage
ss18 win 2,19 min from Loeb
ss24 win 2,11 min from Loeb

Portugal
ss1 super stage
ss2 leader
ss12 +6,59 min from Mikko
ss13 +6,31 min from Mikko
ss14 +6,12 min from Mikko
ss15 +5,47 min from Mikko
ss19 +5,19 min from Mikko
ss20 +5,00 min from Mikko

Argentina
ss1 leader
ss3 leader
ss10 +14 min from Loeb
ss11 +14 min from Loeb
ss12 +14 min from Loeb
ss14 +13 min from Loeb
ss15 +12 min from Loeb
ss16 +12 min from Loeb
ss17 +12 min from Loeb
ss18 +12 min from Loeb
ss19 +12 min from Loeb

Acropolis
ss4 win +4sec from Loeb
ss8 win +19,3 sec from Loeb
ss15 win +15,5 sec from Loeb
ss16 win +14,1 sec from Loeb
ss17 +10,2 sec from Loeb
ss18 lost wheel

New Zealand
ss9 win +1,35 min from Loeb
ss11 win +1,26 min from Loeb

Finland
ss2 win +1,5 sec from Loeb
ss11 win +20 sec from Loeb

Adac Germany
ss14 win +20,5 min from Loeb

Wales
ss1 leader
ss2 leader
ss10 win +20 from Latvala
ss12 win + 21,7 sec from Latvala
ss17 win +28sec from Latvala

so out of 43 stage wins the 24 stage wins are achieved when difference with leader was more than 1,24 min........

I agree that he may be the least valuable of the current factory drivers (Loeb, JML, Mikko). But he's still waaay better than any of the other available options (Ostberg, Neuville, Tanak, etc)

My Catalunya musings
Why do Spanish kids dress like New Age Eco-Warriors but leave litter everywhere?
Is it possible to get passive stoned from the non-stop dope smoking around you.
How many times does Loeb sign his name during each rally?
Will the Spanish marshals ever learn how to marshal a rally correctly
Have surgeons yet perfected a procedure for removing a whistle from an anus that has been inserted without aid of lubricant ?
How can weather change so much over 4 days - all four seasons
If Wales was too wet in November which fool at the FIA thought Catalunya would be different?
Why was Weijs so sideways while Nikara was so correct on his lines? - Totally different to my expectation
Who recruits the 'talent' for the Citroen hospitality hostesses?
Just how smooth is Loeb, at Pesells he didn't lose time off the ground while all the other top drivers seemed to cock at least 1 wheel.
Megaphones, see earlier comment about whistles.
Seb O so friendly and engaged with the fans after shakedown, really impressed me.
The Citroen crew stripping Hirvonen's car at flexiservice really impressed me.
Mads has a dry sense of humour - at the Friday evening top 3 interview JML said pulling back 47 sec would be difficult. Mads grinned and just nodded his head. It was great to see him there without gifts.
Just how great is the scenery around Cornudella de Montsant, driving above the clouds on Saturday morning - great pasticcia shop with coffee machine in the village too.
Thanks once again to Priorat for his inside information, sorry we didn't meet. Great to see Rage82 at Santa Marina stage

That seems like a pretty good score actually. 19 stage wins while close to the leader? Not bad.
I agree that he may be the least valuable of the current factory drivers (Loeb, JML, Mikko). But he's still waaay better than any of the other available options (Ostberg, Neuville, Tanak, etc)
but still, if ostberg would have been able to compete in monte-carlo and new zealand, he most likely would have been number 3 and first ford in the standings by some margin.
and this while he doesn't have a factory car nor the budget to allow him to test a lot or to permit many crashes.

in my view, ostberg deserves a seat in a factory team more than solberg or latvala.

Ostberg has finished top 5 on all rallies he competed in.

Which is part of the secret of his consistency he wasn't pushing to try to beat Loeb as a primary objective.
Yes he will get better with the ability to test but first he will need to prove he can beat the best when they aren't crashing. A win without the on-road winner being disqualified is the first proof required.
In equal machinery I believe Mads will be quicker than Petter but still behind JML, certainly on tarmac for the next season (or never if he has Mikko's mental block)

I think Petter is much quicker than Mads on every surface except snow. There is nothing to suggest otherwise. In terms of consistency Mads is 100x better, and is therefore perhaps better placed to challenge for a title, however on pace alone Petter has and should continue to hugely overshadow Mads for a year or so still.

Well if they both end up at M Sport then we shall see what a level playing field does ;)

We are also back from Catalunya, here’s my impressions. On Thursday we were in Barcelona for the ceremonial start but it might be better if we were in the service park in Salou as in Barcelona was overcrowded. On Friday we were watching on the start of Terra Alta 1 and on Pessels 2 ( spot described by Priorat, thank you ). This was my first gravel rally, add rain and I can say that definitely gravel is more spectacular than tarmac. On the second day we were on Priorat stage – two different spots. On the second one Hans Weis has a little moment, Mikkelsen and Al Rajhi were very spectacular going sideways. For the final day we choose the Santa Marina stage (thanks again to Priorat for the precise description) where we met with Phil ( Mintexmemory ), it was very enjoyable to speak to another person from the forum. All in all the rally was great not counting the marshals and most of young spanish guys who were acting like imbeciles.

PS. I will try to make a short video later in the week.

Thanks a lot for the good words! You are right about the early cutting of some cars in the gravel section, but the footage was awful - you see somebody legs or body and almost nothing from the car that's why I've decided to not put it in the video.

You should've kept it. 5 cars x 5 seconds is not big outlay. The car moving straight away is not important if you see it or not, it's the sound that matters.
