Can someone explain to me why Historic UK regs restrict the size of wheels & tyres to less than was used at the time the cars were run originally?
Our second Car is a 2012 Ford Ka on standard wheels & tyres and these are as large as a Group 4 Escort can use, yet when I was competing in these things back in the day, Very Early 1980’s,
we used tyres wider than these.
If it is down to cost saving, I think it is false economy as in the dry last year on the Severn Valley top crews had gone down to the canvas after just 10 miles, wider would have saved some tread and made them safer on both the stage and on the following road section. (Crews had already used the spares in the boot by this point)
Cars like the Ascona 400 and Chevette competed on a very even footing during the original period of these cars, but today they seem to be under tyred, and cannot be as competitive as they should be, I am sure this is why we see Escort Gp 4’s at the top, more than we may do if people felt they could compete in Asconas etc with the right tyres.
