each engine create its unique sound. Its something normal.
If you want to create different sound among 2 same engines you can do it with exhaust.Different material, shape, diameter, different silencers etc.
citroen and mini has the same engine block but sounds difference. i heard in a video ds3 made the same sound for a second :) i think they are different because of exhausts. mini has 2 exit.

Whos gravel crew is Seb Marshall btw?
Who are the gravel crews for the rest of wrc drivers?
i read that :
delecour + giraudet ( what a dream team) for novikov
vouilloz + ? For ogier
gardemeister + ? For latvala
but I have no idea for the rests of the top drivers. If someone has the answer it would be great.

They don't have same block AFAIK. PSA uses EP6CDT only for DS3 R3, 207 R3 and 208 R5 but not for DS3 WRC where they use purpose-built engine which the rules allow.

Tough tyre choice for the 2 stages. So unexpected to find ice after 20+km of dry tar, but that's what makes this stage so famous! Fab road.

http://www.ralsys.com/irally_admin/news_images/2013HanninenMonteCarloCar132.jpg (http://irallylive.com/ir_news.htm?00002837#)After the morning stage, the Qatar M-Sport team has put out these driver quotes:

Evgeny Novikov (fourth overall / fourth on SS11): "This was a very nice stage – very slippery with very tricky conditions. We weren’t pushing to the maximum on this stage but for sure we will still fight to improve our position. Now we just need to make sure we have a clean run this afternoon and safeguard our tyres for tomorrow.”

Juho Hänninen (seventh overall / sixth on SS11): “The stage was OK. We didn’t make any mistakes, but still it was quite slippery and I was a bit too excited to push on the downhill sections. I just lost the line and was too much sideways which meant we lost the speed. But all in all it was quite OK. “

Mads Østberg (Eighth overall / third on SS11): “I was quite pleased with the opening stage. I think we are definitely learning on Tarmac and then when we got to the snow section towards the end I was able to set some quite good split times."

“We have improved a few things from yesterday and we know a little bit clearer now what we need to do to improve the driving. I need to alter the way I brake into the corners when there is a Tarmac line through the snow, so we’ll keep practising that and work on building up our experience.”

Michelin says Novikov and Østberg have taken 4 studs and 2 winter tyres this afternoon, Hänninen 4 winters 2 studs

20 minutes ago.. the temperature on elevation 950 meters was around +3.5 degrees. The stage is run on the elevations 600-1100. First part is much more in shade and on the north side of the mountain. middle part more open and opened to the sun and winds. last few corners should be pretty tricky under the forest and on the north side.

If I remember right to my Sisteron visits, the last part uphill of that road in the wood could be full of snow and ice. That years was boring to watch the cars, because all are using tarmac tyres and on the snow part they struggled a lot with very low speed. But at the end they were faster then those with studded, because a long way asphalt like on that picture.

Ostberg isn't really a title rival though. This rally has just confirmed my belief that he's simply not good enough to be a factory driver yet - yes you shouldn't judge him on a rally he has never competed on before, but his pace has been really poor throughout except one or two stages. Anyone who thinks Solberg or JML would be worse in the same car is simply wrong!

Anyway sorry, that's an off-topic. Still very impressed by Novikov though, and Juho looking good at times too bearing in mind he's never driven the car before!

I don't agree that Solberg would be top 3 here necessarily, though I'd say that if he hadn't crashed then he'd certainly be much nearer to Loeb than Ostberg is. We can only tell by the end of the year whether promoting Ostberg to the factory team was a good idea, but I'm still sceptical.

Also the split problems made the Rally more interesting, one good side of this :)

Kielder

The quantity of studded tyres left is the point:

Jost Capito: “From the first day we’ve asked them to conserve their studded tyres on the asphalt sections – if you look at the split times you’ll see that they were pretty slow, so they did exactly what we asked them to do. I won’t tell you exactly what we have left, but I think that we are in an acceptable, if not ideal position for tomorrow,”

Yves Matton: “The number of new studded tyres we have depends on the drivers; some have four, some less and some more. It’s not the optimum, because for sure we don’t have enough to do all the stages with new tyres, but the second hand ones we have seem to be in good condition. If we manage well we can achieve our goal.”

Christian Loriaux: “We don’t have too many but I think everybody here is in the same boat. Okay, we’re getting a bit short but fortunately we’re allowed to re-use and we have a fair few that are undamaged. Like everybody we will not have all new tyres but we will have reasonably decent ones with studs so I think the fight will be fair.”

I´m thinking of the Polos´ handling in RMC.

Am I the only one thinking the car is way oversteerd. Why is that? Is the car not steering in to bends properly? So the drivers have to oversteer before with sliding as a result?

Or is the rear suspension to hard making the car sliding more than the others?

Per is not the same at both polos.Latvalas polo is way more oversteered but imho this is by his driving style

He also played with car's setup last 2 days, perhaps there is the difference mostly.

Ford drivers end of Day 3:

Evgeny Novikov (3rd) said:
“Today has been a good day and of course I am very happy with the position at the moment. Tomorrow we have another five stages so we will have to see what the weather will be, but for the moment we are happy. “I think it is better for me if it is fully dry or full snow. We still have some difficulties in the mixed conditions, but it is not so bad. We are gaining a lot of experience and that is the most important thing. “Yes, this is only my second year and I am doing quite well, but it is difficult to explain exactly why. I am here to fight and achieve good results – that is all I try to do on every rally.”

Juho Hänninen (7th) said: “Today has been OK. We went on the safe side with the tyres because I want to save some new studs for tomorrow if it snows as the weather is suggesting. I am quite happy with my driving and I feel as though we are learning more and more each stage. “Thanks again to the team because the car has been perfect all rally.”

Mads Østberg (8th) said: “We made some more changes to the car in service and that worked a lot better for me this afternoon. We had a stage win [SS12] which was really good – it felt like everything just came together for us on that stage. To be honest I think we just calmed down and started again – that’s where the confidence has come from. “We had a lot of discussions with our engineer last night so we knew what to do and understood what was necessary to go faster. Instantly it worked, and that was a good thing for sure. “I think we had a really good run on the last stage as well but we were on the wrong tyres. I have certainly learnt a lot more about driving on Tarmac with snow tyres and I think we are progressing well in all areas. Hopefully we can continue to improve tomorrow.”

Team Principal, Malcolm Wilson OBE said: “It’s been another fantastic day for the team. It is especially pleasing to see that all of our drivers have now had a fastest time. We have a big team and the fact that all of them are capable of recording stage wins just goes to prove how competitive the Fiesta [RS WRC] is and certainly bodes well for the rest of the season. “It is also good to see how all three drivers have adapted to what have been some of the most difficult Monte conditions for many years – I certainly haven’t seen conditions as tricky as this for a long time!”

About splits: Latvala made a comment on finnish site: "we had radio trouble, so I didn't get splits and didn't know what speed to drive."
THIS IS RALLY, YOU SHOULD DRIVE AS FAST AS YOU CAN, MORON!

You really don't understand rallyiing, do you? Following ypur plan, you would probably have to drive on your rims the last day

Michal Ernst suffered a serious injury in March 2012 in an accident in Valašská rally. He had a terrible opened fracture of that arm.

By the way Martin Prokop started to use the Simpson Hybrid HANS this year.

wish I'd had that when I got my arm trapped between the cage and the door during an off. Elbows aren't as squidgy as I expected :'(

Or maybe Prokop is inspired by Gigi and gets a bit fistycuffsy so he's wearing padding ready for a sparring session

There has been a several years long discussion about HANS here including a petition against its mandatory use. You know there has been a large number of back injuries in last couple of years which were uncommon in the past. Even in WRC Dennis Kuipers, Ilka Minor and several others suffered broken lumbar vertebrae. In the IRC it was Guy Wilks for example. Here drivers association asked several doctors and they made a statement that especially in case of impact from the bottom the usually used form of HANS transform too much force into the strain of lower back and therefore can cause a fracture in the S-shape of the spine. Of course often it's caused by wrong HANS size or angle of the collar or wrong seat size, loose belts etc. Another factor is if there are normal belts used or those with helper stripes for HANS fixation. The Simpson Hybrid HANS shall not cause this transformation of vertical load into lumbar spine.

Weather for tomorrow.

It just started to snow on both stages (very lightly at the moment). However, snow in SS15/18 turns soon to rain and soon the snow from the stage should dissapear. Temperature on those two stages will be +1..+4 during their runs. there will be medium and heavy rain that turns very heavy during the powerstage

Turini stage. temperature will be between +2.. and -3 during the whole three runs.it should snow on all elevations right now. medium to heavy snow continues whole day and turns very heavy tomorrow eavning (maybe just after the last stage - too late). I dont see 50 cm coming before the end of rally stages (maybe 20 cm).. but by Sunday evening it can be 50 cms, maybe.
At around 10-11 it should change from snow to rain on lower elevations. however, It continues to snow on the most of the stage. SS16 will be difficult tomorow.. with studded tyres from celan stage to snowy..

ok Guys ..

Apart from Loeb who is in a league of his own and he is the best ever next is Ogier and Petter.
you all mention that he crashed all the time and yet another driver with half Petters years in the WRC and maybe double the crashes has a factory seat and is tipped to be the world champ just because Malcolm Wilson always spoke highly of him.

Petter should have A FACTORY DRIVE THIS YEAR! period

For what his past results ? when was the last time he won a WRC Round ?
