I think Colin Clark probably says it best on twitter regarding the timing:

@voiceofrally
A lesson I've learned in my 42 yrs on this earth. In all walks of life, you just cannot expect five star service at bargain basement prices!

@voiceofrally
One last word, if we value professionalism, if we value experience and if we value the benefits this brings, we must expect to pay for it.

Can't say fairer than that. You get what you pay for.

Yeeees, I thought so. It is expected reason to change the provider, but what amuses me is that FIA actually don't care about the quality.

I see this has been complained about before but.... Heres me full of praise to the guys at work for Thierry being in 1st place in monte, and then i read the fia have messed up the split times! Does todt even give a to$$?
More importantly, what happens if there was a nasty accident? How would the safety crews know to cancel the remainder of a stage??
Not only is this stage times thing an annoyance to WRCs very small fan base (us) but now it is starting to become hazerdous to the safety of the competitors! I hope this is sorted for tomorrow....

Just catching up the action from yesterday in Australia.
Looks like the timing was a big f*** up yesterday. Anybody know if they have corrected it for the rest of the rally?

Only 1 retirement of WRC drivers, pretty amazing by the looks of how tricky the stages were... Shame for Neuville but who is surprised??? Hopefully Nasser will invest in Hanninen instead. Sorry Belgium.

Ah.... just read all the reports about the stuff up with Timing....

I hope it's rectified for the remaining of the days....

But knowing there is going to be cm's of SNOW! I guess S(H)!T won't be able to get a plane out for timing in the mountains! The stages are further away from service as Autosport mentioned meaning possibly not getting times! Not even a clock at the beginning of the stage!!

The opening of the day 1 highlights were really well made, enjoyed the editing...even though I couldn't understand the french version!!
I think the 15 minutes for day one was far too short, although 2012 day highlights were around 15-20 minutes of the days action, the rest of the time was spent recapping the days earlier - which got boring.

Onboards on the VW lacked! Both angles in Hirvonens car were wrong. Both should have been higher

30 Minutes sounds okay for the remainder of the rally although I hope there isn't too much emphasis on recap as in the past!

Rant over! :)

I still can't believe the timing issues that happened today. It's incredible that the cars had to start a stage without knowing their time on a previous one. One point is clear: if S1T were still working with the WRC, this wouldn't have happened, not here not anywhere else. It's a decision that FIA made (it seems due to save money), but neither they nor SIT has given public apologies, only that they're studying everything. Besides, they can't assure that the system will work properly tomorrow.
We only can find the bright side of the story in this Loeb's words: “I wasn’t measuring my pace at all, because with the official timing system not working, I couldn’t change my rhythm in accordance with that of the other drivers. So I pushed hard throughout the afternoon."

Official highlights of Day 1 in English - don't know who the first commentator is, then Paul King comes back:

WRC 2013 Monte Carlo Day 1 Highlights - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpcweqS-wmE)
What I liked:
- A good balance between in-car shots, out-of-car shots and interviews.
- Plenty of variety in the shots, particularly in the out-of-car stuff.
- Very little repetition of shots, and what is used, is used effectively to establish that the cars are repeating a stage.
- Paul King. Don't get me wrong; I think Colin Clark does a great job, but King is the commentator I have associated with the WRC for years.

What I didn't like:
- No balance between stage coverage; there was about five or six minutes' worth of content from Stage 1, but barely a minute's worth from Stage 2.
- The segment is too brief and there is too much focus on Loeb and Ogier. Maybe there will be a longer programme produced once the rally is over, but there was a whole lot going on - Latvala's recovery in the afternoon, Hanninen's stage times, Novikov and Ostberg yo-yoing through the field, and Kosciuszko's disaster - that didn't get covered. Outsiders could be forgiven for thinking that Loeb and Ogier are the only two drivers in the field.

Juho used cross-axle mixed tyre setup one time yesterday. That was when he also had his spins.

He has also said earlier that he needs to adjust his driving style more as Fiesta WRC needs generally less aggressive driving style and he's used to drive Fabia very aggressively. Also, not any tests on snow so I would not be worried. The only ones that need to worry are the other competitors :)

It's generally same forecast as in 2009. That year the first morning stage was under something like 10-20 cm of new snow, heavy in lower altitudes. First car after zeros was Franz Wittmann jr. and he was the first real snow plough. Later Meeke and Hänninen crashed in that stage. When there is a calamity in the mountains there are not enough machines to keep all roads ok. It was really crazy and we even didn't manage to reach the stage and had to walk last two kilometers uphill :)

Mirek
17th January 2013, 08:42
On this stage there is the famous tricky place where Sarrazin crashed in 2009 and Arzeno in 2011. Also just two kilometers further there is a place where Vouilloz crashed in 2009. I guess the conditions may look similar to that of 2009 now.

This stage is by nature way fastest of all in Monte Carlo. It shall suit Nordic drivers more than the twisty ones. But the conditions must be tough because the average speed is 40-50 km/h less than when it's dry (record of Atko from 2008 was over 130 km/h)!

Ford fightback :)

'Evgeny Novikov took full advantage of his decision to fit a new set of studded rubber to his Ford Fiesta RS this morning and duly delivered the first stage win for the Qatar M-Sport World Rally Team.

The young Russian was fastest by 4.9sec from team-mate Mads Ostberg and said: “I was on the limit. I was very careful in the braking areas. It was a difficult stage but I enjoyed it.”

Ostberg made some changes to the car before the stage and they clearly paid off for the Norwegian. “It worked better but I’m still not pushing,” he explained. “I didn’t want to push and I’m losing a lot of time in the high-speed areas.” Not that much though….

Juho Hanninen made it a Ford 1-2-3 in the stage, 8.3sec behind Novikov, although the Finn was slightly rattled after briefly sliding off the road on a fast right corner.'

Me too, presumably as there is a clear line on certain stages worn studs will be preferred rather than wrecking any that are still fresh. Saturday night could turn into a lottery!

JML has punctured 2 tyres already, 1 was definitely a stud

Also can't recall if this has been asked, is it permitted / possible to replace worn studs on the tyre in service?

I was thinking something slightly different. Would it be an advantage to remove some new studs from a new tyre, then replace them later to give the tyre 'a second life'? The regulations don't permit teams to alter the tyre's profile (i.e. add grooves), but I wonder if stud removal and replacement is permitted by the teams or by the tyre supplier?

Instead of choosing wiser words such as "Loeb's result won't affect our championship plans", he chooses to act like a spoiled brat with his "I don't care" talk. I believe that the photo showing the damage on Latvala's car after hitting a pole at SS5 wasn't posted here:

My God..... What a load of BS...... Although I admire Loeb he always was much more arrogant between the lines, Im surprised most of you dont see this. What did you expect?! Ogier to beat Loeb in the first outing of the car?! If that happened it was pretty much cinfirmation Loeb was not that good.

You missed the point...

Instead of choosing wiser words such as "Loeb's result won't affect our championship plans"

And be yet another boring corporate driver ...

It's interesting how divided opinions are regarding Seb O. However, the fact that he gives fairly comprehensive answers to questions asked and replied to, not in his native language, means that often his emphasis may be mistaken or those hearing him, especially those for whom english is also not their 1st language, may put their own interpretations to support their pre-conceptions. What he said is a long way from Je m'en balance (English equivalent, 'I don't give a monkey's') which would easily slip out if he were even mildly fed up with the line of question. What I heard was a matter of fact answer to a deliberately provocative question (all journos know the history). Nothing in what Seb O said can be interpreted as 'unsportsmanlike', brusque at worst.

If he survives it isn't that cold...

Seb Marshall ‏@sebmarshall (https://twitter.com/sebmarshall) Some strange sights observed when out doing ice note crew, never as odd as this though! He must be a bit cold!!

240 km of stages left, very hard weather expected for last leg. More and more problems with tyres to come too.
