Where are the photos from the other Ford-drivers in overall? No matter how little the difference, by uploading photos on facebook fanpages and Twitter on regular basis, they are giving the sponsors some exposure they would not have if they wouldn't do it... There is some reason why Neuville has more personal sponsors than others... Thierry knows how to make himself popular, and maybe that also takes part in the reason why Qatar/M-Sport chose Neuville in stead of Tänak? ;)

But indeed, if Thierry had taken a normal photo and uploaded that, it would have been perfect.

Cool down, I'm not attacking him, just wondering why he is taking bathroom-mirror-pictures that I usually only see when I''m accidently logged in on my sisters facebook. :D
At least he hasn't got his finger on his cheek doing a pout like a typical Brit addo girl (arrrgh stepdaughter!!!!)

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but is it allowed to have those patches (Red Bull and Monroe) on the fireproof suit? They were put there after the suit was 'closed'.

I'm asking that because recently I heard that on the last Rally dos Sertões here in Brazil, the officials told that the suits with those 'patches' wouldn't be allowed to be used on the race.

Yes they are allowed as long as fireproof thread is used to sew them on, and it only goes through the top layer of nomex :)

It makes sense that he would do it - it would help him fit into the team while they get up and running, start building relationships with the mechanics and gravel crews and engineers so that when it comes time for his first event in Portugal, he is comfortable working with them and they are comfortable working with him.

We'll see how it turns out. Anyway it's not good for his reputation, especially towards FFSA. How could a federation justify the support to a driver who is not behaving well in normal traffic? (Not my question, but that is a question that "anti-people" could ask...)

I think that it was like I guessed yesterday. Top drivers were using normal snow tyres for shakedown. They have only 10 studded tyres and forecast says that at least 8 of them are needed tomorrow and another 8 needed on Thursday and another 8 on Friday and probably another 8 on Saturday. Did you followed my calculations? Here it is shortly: 8+8+8+8=10? Right? With some knowledge on math it is easy to understand why they are not using studded tires on shakedown :-)

Clearly it is going to be a big decision when to use the studs. Taking the gamble on what will be the longest stage with the right conditions to favour them will be crucial. If they use them up in days 1&2 but they might be more use on day 4 then it will be like poker, everyone trying to bluff. I am very excited (always like a kid at the start of a new season) and expect that there will be some surprises

Right? With some knowledge on math it is easy to understand why they are not using studded tires on shakedown :-)

you are sure right about the tires, but i am almost sure that also a few factory wrc drives used studded tires at shakedown, on 3,6km shake you can not destroy them...

what i wanted to say is that there are 2 big factors, tires and also road getting better (faster) sure not on the stages with snow/ice but there can be a huge difference in the lower stages

Shakedown done. I had 4 good runs. The stage was improving from run to run so you can not really rely on the results :-)

I think I must be one of the few who prefers the official Citroen livery to the previous one. The fact that it's more red than blue just makes it look more 'Citroeny' to me (though I still think their 2001-02 livery was the best - before Telefonica blue was added, and retained even when the sponsor left!) I also don't really mind the M-Sport burgundy, though I think they could have come up with something a little better.

Thanks for posting the shakedown. The VWs are looking pdq. I haven't expected much in my pickems from them (just 7th for Latvala). I must say I have more excitement for this season than I've had for a while.

Not all the top crews were on studded Michelin tyres for the first pair of runs, however. All the Citroën runners had chosen the tiny metal tips, for example, as did Skoda’s (sic) Latvala and Ford’s Hanninen, but Ogier, Ostberg, Novikov and Neuville went out on snow tyres. For the second visit later in the morning, the Citroëns remained on studs, Latvala switched to snow tyres, Ogier tried studs, and all the Ford drivers opted for Michelin snow tyres.

Could someone from France explain , is it that if you are excessively speeding that your licence is taken off you or do you only have to be a small bit over the speed limit ? like how much over the speed limt was Vigon and now Gilbert for the police to take their licences ?

We can lose our driving license by two ways :
1/ it's the 3rd or 4th time that we lose small points (we have 12 points) - so then our driving license doesn't have point, and we can't drive.
2/ we do an excessively speeding. 40 km/h up to the speed limit the driving license is suspending by the police during 72h maximum.
Then, if the judge want to punish you (if the speed is too high), you can have various thing, as a suspension or a lost of the license.

I don't know for Gilbert how high was the excess. It seems it's a excessively speed, but not during the recce or something which has to see with the rally. It happened last week.

For Vigion, he was taken at 126km/h, whereas the limit was 50 km/h (limitation in city). And there's a gap btw the speed selected by the police and the real speed, something like 10km/h under ...

Poor spectator control judging by the clips and images. Fans 10 metres away from the cars on the outside of a corner. Not good.

That's nothing new in RMC and believe me that shakedown is the most controlled of the whole rally. It's the only stage where marshals are present over whole length. Otherwise there are even kilometers without them.

Weather

SS1 should be -1..-3 degrees, cloudy, no more snowfall (but currently one big snowcloud is approximately 45 minutes from the stage)
SS2 should be -2..-7 degrees, it was just snowing, and some more snow is coming in next few hours. Tomorrow should be without remarkable snowfall.

SS3 +1..-1 degrees, no more snowfall, melting starts on the lower elevations, wind increases
SS4 -1..-6 degrees, no more snofall. but no sun either.

I think that there will not be too much fresh snow that might be bad for the first starters, but it can be compacted and get worse in some locations. Also I expect a lot of ice on SS1/3, because it was up to +1 there today and it will be as low as -3 overnight.. so.. the result should be icy.
So, I expect fisrt stage will be for studded tires, second stage with 2 studded and 2 snow as there might be much more snow as well.

It seems to have become some kind of trend for WRC-photographers to photoshop in extreme saturated gradients for the sky. Keep it real instead!

I'm not sure wether it is a photoshop edition to that photo or the use a filter in front of the lens... But I agree. Another trend stuff that doesn't catch my eye is the (ab)use of HDR editions.

There is a difference between using Photoshop to enhance an already existing colour in the image, and placing a colour that has no resemblance to the lighting conditions at all. In my opinion rally photography is journalistic photography and therefore shouldn't be manipulated (not to be mixed with edited). I have no problems with people using Photoshop to art their images up for fun, it's just that such images cannot be published in the media.

Flippin 'eck! I've just realised it's 10 years since the start of the 2003 season!! I remember following the Monte so clearly on the 'net at college since I didn't have it at home. Now that was a season I anticipated and enjoyed!

Dear FIA: Please bring back 3 cars for those who want them. I don't think it's a coincidence that that's how things were in the glory days. And never make dumb rules again, especially if they force out the famous drivers that bring the fans in.

It exists 3 cars nowadays ... Ford (Qatar) has 4 official drivers (Novikov, Neuville, Ostberg, Al Attiyah) and it seems that Hanninen is included in the team. Citroën has 4 too (Sordo, Loeb, Hirvonen, Al Qassimi) and VW 3 (Latvala, Ogier, Mikkelsen). It's only a question of name ... but the cars are here.

That's encouraging to see, but I think the teams should be allowed to nominate more than 2 cars of which the first two of those in the results claim points. Then the teams have an incentive to run more cars, meaning more drivers drive and the fans come in! Also, there will be less crimes committed like Galli, P.Solberg, Atkinson and the like being out of drives.

P.S. The only reason Atko might look a little mediocre recently is because of the car (looks like Armindo is telling the truth) and cos he's rusty and has been out of the WRC a long time. He seriously impressed me in 2007 and I see that in 2008 he beat Solberg which back then was a real feat.

2003 Result (10 years ago) - I'm so fond of this season I still remember the results off the top of my head. I just wanted to revisit briefly.

1.Sebastien Loeb (Citroen Xsara)
2.Colin Mcrae (Citroen Xsara) +45s
3.Carlos Sainz (Citroen Xsara)
4.Markko Martin (Ford Focus)
5.Richard Burns (Peugeot 206)
6.Cedric Robert (Peugeot 206 - Private) - what on earth happened to him?!! I remember Corrado Provera promising him a full season based on this result.
7.Francois Duval (Ford Focus) +0.2 behind Robert!
8.Armin Schwarz (Hyundai Accent) - YAY!
9.Didier Auriol (Skoda Octavia) - YAYx2 - was huge fan of the Octavia (Monte and Safari 2001 with Schwarz baby)
10.Roman Kresta (Peugeot 206) - big fan of Roman
11.Antony Warmbold (Ford Focus) - Hi Antony! :)
12.Olivier Burri (Toyota Corolla)
13.Marcus Gronholm (Peugeot 206) - you were scary fast but binned it.

Others who retired
Mikko Hirvonen (Ford)
Gilles Panizzi (Peugeot)
Harri Rovanpera (Peugeot) - ok I know he didn't do this one, but I wanted to include him as he was a top driver round this time.
Tommi Makinen (Subaru)
Petter Solberg (Subaru) - well done for BOTH retiring on SS5 guys!
Freddy Loix (Hyundai) - hope you enjoyed the ride downhill - Looked like fun to me.
Toni Gardemeister (Skoda) - Never got going...

That doesn't include the JWRC which had Brice Tirabassi (Renault), Daniel Carlsson and Urmo Aava (Suzuki), Guy Wilks (Ford), Kris Meeke (Opel - man he was FAST in that car!), Mirco Baldacci and Marcos Ligato (Fiat). Kosti Katajamaki also came 2nd in a VOLKSWAGEN POLO, but was DSQ'd on a technicality (hmmm wonder if that's a portent of something to come on Sunday...)

WOW just look at all those names and cars!! This has stirred me much more than anything this year! I'm not trying to be mean or negative but this is how I feel. I hope the FIA are taking things seriously about fixing the mess which I mostly blame them for really.

Over and out.

Basically it is his old codriver taking advantage of the situation to let everyone know that he felt mis-treated when he was thrown out of 'his' seat with the argument that he was immature and in the way of Gilberts development.
Between the lines he is just taking a lot of pleasure from the fact that he believes 'the truth' has now come out, that Gilbert is the immature of the two and that he was thrown out for other reasons..

Looks like a sticker to show whether or not the car is on studs or not - must be for the general public or police so they are easily identified. If I'm not wrong there has been rules about that in mountainous regions for ages, so that a car not on studs can keep extra braking distances.

Watching the video, I remember the wise words by Loeb that I read this afternoon:

"Q: This is a true Monte, isn’t it…

A: I have never done the rally with a lot of snow, it’s always been one stage or half a stage, but usually more like a tarmac rally. At the moment, it’s not like this, the conditions will be tricky. On the shakedown, I think we were lucky it was in the field, because I think some time everybody went in the field somewhere! But tomorrow, it is not in the field, tomorrow we have walls, rocks and ditches. Let’s see what we can do.”

SS3 Burzet-St Martial. It's the highest point of the stage. On the first photo, cars arrive from the road on the right and go to the back of the photographer. After a few meters, they turn right and start to descend. This is a good onboard of the stage (the crew reaches the town at 12:58):

I'm not sure about the second photo, but I believe it was taken few meters before the town.
