or as the guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jun/24/england-italy-euro-2012-live) puts it:

This has been absolutely ridiculous. England have had one shot on target, Glen Johnson's effort in the fifth minute. Italy have had a goal disallowed, two shots off the post, countless chances and all the play. Somehow England have dragged the match, kicking and screaming, to penalties. Absurd. That was such an inept performance in so many ways.

Well, England clearly had above average tournament by their standards, quarterfinal is the best they can usually reach. :) And I can't remember the last time they won on penalties. Perhaps never?! Should have bet some money on this game, it seemed so logical - Italy winning on penalties.

Although Germany is widely considered as a favourite, Italy has a hope. Six years ago GER was also a favourite, but lost to ITA in semifinals. Spain is gradually improving game-by-game, so they have to be taken into serious consideration for winning yet another title. Portugal can impress as well on their day. It is still wide open and this time no surprises in quarterfinals. :)

I walk away with some cash :D
England exactly met my expectations as they've only passed the quarter-finals in all tournaments, twice in my lifetime.

I support England all the way... to the quarter-finals, where they'll be knocked out because they'll play like a bunch or overpaid prima-donnas, the Sun will say "We Was Robbed", and the Daily Mail will blame it all on immigrants.

The really telling stats from this match are that Italy completed 831 passes whereas England completed 324 passes. The stats show that Italy had 64% of possesion whereas if you look at the total number of shots, Italy had 20 to England's 9.
England obviously went into the match hoping to play contain and counter, which barely worked for 120 minutes but you don't actually win a majority of matches without attacking.

Italy outplayed England in every area including heart and ticker, and Pirlo's audacity to chip over Hart merely serves to prove that quite frankly England deserved to lose.

Brown, Jon Brow
25th June 2012, 01:08
Well done Italy. The better team won.

England defended like lions but we just didn't have any quality when we got the ball.

I hope the likes of Wilshere, Cleverley and Rodwell can give us more success than the 'golden generation'.

Storm
25th June 2012, 05:10
^So its not all about defending well is it? The team which never aspired to attack or score despite having 2/3 great goalscorers lost. It would have been a travesty to see them win on penalties but thats football..

The commentary got boring quickly with how "manfully England are defending, defending like Lions" I guess they attack like kittens then.

well done Italy. Diamanti was good (and cool on his last shot, Pirlo was incredible)

Six years ago GER was also a favourite, but lost to ITA in semifinals. Spain is gradually improving game-by-game, so they have to be taken into serious consideration for winning yet another title.

that was because of a fantastic Del Piero goal IIRC...still Prandelli seems like a good enough guy who makes good subs when needed.

I actually think most games have been pretty exciting so far (not always good, but entertaining) and the overall level is quite decent.

Unfortunately, we're gonna get mediocrity with Euro 2016, when 24 teams are aloud to play.

By defending well England kept themselves in with a chance until the very end despite being the inferior team.

The Dutch have one of the best attacks in Europe yet they lost all 3 games because they can't defend. England played to their strengths, which is arguably the best defence in Europe. Unfortunately, as I've been syaing throughout this entire thread, we just don't have players who can keep the ball. Our players treat it as a 'hot potato' and all look uncomfortable when they have the ball.

Statistically. Spain has had the best tournament by only conceding 1 goal; that was against Italy and did so basically because they like England gave Italy and more specifically Pirlo a free-ride to pass the ball to anyone he liked.
Portugal have conceded four thus far and Italy only 2.
I don't think that Spain or Italy were troubled by either Croatia or Ireland in the group stages; that their stats are propped up to a degree.

I haven't yet run the numbers, but if you were to look at time not in possession versus goals conceded then it's actually possible that England may be the best defensive side in Europe. England's problem isn't so much a defensive issue but the fact that their only midfielder with any real potency was Gerrard.

Congrats to Spain for advancing to final. Don't think anyone has won three major tournaments in a row, so that would be a huge achievement if they won it. But with such lack of attack Spain displayed today they would have real trouble against whoever they will be facing in the final.

That was one boring match but all is good in the end when ronaldo and pepito lose.

I just wonder if it is a universal myth or just a local one that ronaldo is such an awesome free kick taker. Over here every time he takes a free kick, and he seems to be taking all of them, the commentators keep on praising his skill... and rave about how the goalkeeper is $h1tting his pants... TBH I find his free kicks below average at best. I don't recall anyone going nuts like this over... lets say Hargreaves' free kicks (when he used to play) even though I reckon he was much better at it.

For sure we won't see such a crappy boring match like last night. I was especially disappointed by Spain...can't believe they are in the final :s I too don't like Ronaldo and Pepe but Portugal played much better and deserved to go to the final...period.

much better? they were maybe just a little bit better the first 90 minutes (although Spain came closer to score IRC) but then in extra time they were nowhere and quite lucky to get to the penalty shootout... at least that's how I saw it :p :

I beq to differ as IMHO Spain was clearly better and created better chances. Playing without a clear striker means that they can't finish their superiority ... cheers to Del Bosque! :) Portugal was well disciplined and committed right tactics, but relied heavily on counter-attacks. Bento problably had some advice from Mourinho, cause the game reminded me Barca-Real matches from the past season.
During extra time it was evident that Spain wanted to score and Portugal just waited for penalty kicks.
Silva and Negredo were dissapointments for me and after they were substituted, Spain started to dominate. Coentrao played fantastic match yesterday, for me he was the best man from Portugal side.

Germany to beat Italy 2:0 :p

I remember Iniesta, that was the only chance Spain had before extra time. Still happy it was Spain who went to the final and not Portugal but they didn't deserved it.

28th June 2012, 14:12

nah., Pepe deserves unspeakable things...or atleast a penalty kick launched high in the stands (like ronaldo's multiple free kicks and attempts) atleast I did predict every kick's outcome correctly..especially the botched one of Alves.

Please update!

pino
28th June 2012, 15:05
Buffon

Bonucci Barzagli Chiellini,

Abate Pirlo De Rossi Marchisio Balzaretti

Diamanti (Cassano) Balotelli

3-5-2 with the only doubt between Diamanti and Cassano

That's my prediction but Prandelli might change it ;)

Last news: Abate (replaced by Balzaretti) out Montolivo in for a 4-3-1-2 with both Cassano and Balotelli in...unless Prandelli changes mind again ;)
