That's nice but this isn't the Geography thread, so some of us have no idea where that is.

All of Southern California would be a chaparral desert (with the exception of riparian woodlands where the streams run out of the mountains) if our water wasn't imported.
I guess it depends on what you value. Lake Hodges is one of the best "big fish" Largemouth Bass lakes in the world. I have caught 3 Bass over 10lb's myself there.
Lake Hodges is in Escondido, which is a place I would not be comfortable living in, it’s too far inland for me, and gets so damned hot in the summer.

OK. You proved me wrong. That was not what I saw. I just saw a town with narrow sidewalks, wide roads and pedestrian traffic lights that turned red before you had the time to cross the road. For example San Diego and La Jolla seemed much nicer than Escondido. The place is a dump, it was a good Orange and Avocado provider and people made fortunes off it. At any rate I-15 which how you arrived there used to be a two lane highway and you had to slow down for a good while. I'm talking since up until I was in my late teens. So when they move I 15 moved about 4 miles to the west it left a real cluster fuc<
It's a dump in town, but it also has historical value. San Pasqual Valley Escondido is the site of the largest battle in the Mexican American war. There is a very good visitor’s center on the site. The story they tell is that the camping in the San Pasqual Valley it was really damp the Mexicans got the drop on the Americans and where they were having big problems with damp gunpowder According to at least one source, because the Mexicans carried Long swords they ran a few Yanks through. One Mexican was killed and 20 Americans There were some heavy hitters with famous Americans names that took part. The actual outcome of that battle may never be known. The version I gave you was from investigation Dwight David Eisenhower JR wrote. He was a well respected Historian.
The visitor’s center has a little walking trail. If you walk a short distance up it reach you will reach a fence, that divides it from the San Diego Wild Animal Park (which I think sucks.) It's almost as bad as "Whale Jail" but I digress
I recommend this national historic site especially the info center here is a link, their are better ones I'm too tired to look for them
Battle of San Pasqual - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_San_Pasqual)

At any rate for a great (cheap)outing The Ferraro Winery is close and on the way it’s an old Winery. You can sample local Red and white, nibble on some bread with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
.
BTW BE CAREFUL OF RATTLESNAKES on the trail by the info center in the spring and early summer I’VE NEVER SEEN SO MANY IN SUCH A SALL AREA.

I see hillside and trees over the neighbouring rooftops from one direction and sometimes a harrier cruising on the breeze. From another direction many empty broken homes, some of which sit teetering on the edge of the cliff top which sheared away during the big quakes, ragged curtains blowing in the breeze where the windows have fallen out. Dark spaces at night. My dining room window is a better option for a nice view of the garden and a beautiful sunny early autumn morning. Looks perfect for sitting outdoors with a coffee and book. I love everyone's posts and pics.

Great thread topic, AFF!

This is an older pic. But just in front of that first stand of trees, my dog spotted a flock of turkeys a couple of hours ago. She almost caught one of the smaller ones before it took flight. Pretty cool, I thought, to have wild turkeys 50 feet from your back deck. If not for the trees, deer, rabbits, squirrels, etc. around me all the time, you'd have probably seen me on CNN Headline News by now... and not in a good way. ;)

Tame/domesticated turkeys generally can't fly. But wild turkeys can fly fairly well - but not for long distances. The one she almost caught made it to the top of the second tree from the right in no time flat.

Here's another "trespasser" that passed through just after I built the house. Since the dog showed up, they don't come as close anymore though.

I must admit, I do like it here, AFF. It's very peaceful and good for the soul. Just after building the house, I had a good size black bear come up on my deck and walk around where the garage was being built (like he was checking things out), and that was a little bothersome. But I believe, in my mind, that was connected to something else and he meant me no harm whatsoever (quite the opposite, in fact) - he's not come back since. I also had a fox, being chased by some dogs, zip right up to my deck while we were having a cook-out. Now that was a surprise and a little scary! I grew up in the country, but then lived in the city for much of my adult life. So getting used to nature again took me awhile. But now it's all good. The worst thing that's happened lately was a year or so ago when my girl decided to lose her top while in the hot tub. And she heard some rustling in the trees. She thought she'd been"peeped"! Turns out the peeper was just a curious deer trying to get an eyeful. :D

And you're welcome to swing by anytime.
