The race will be valid also for the PWRC.

exciting and refeshing news.....nothing of the above was known so far...and since the event is around the corner timing of this thread was perfect as well...

Almost certainly the basis of race is still the city of Olbia.
The Service Park will be where it was in 2011 or the port city (Viale Isola Bianca) near the city center.
The ceremonial start soon we will know the location. The same ceremony for the arrival of the race.

Do you know if the windmill stages from last year down the south of sardinia will be used again?

The Grighine stages looks will be confirmed, but not the SS Alta Marmilla (the stage where Henning burned his Fiesta), because many of these roads were asphalted some months ago! :(

@N.O.T. You're right, the rally-guide which isn't available anymore (or at least the link doesn't work). So you're right, ask the moderator to close this topic immediately. I'm very happy you are so concerned about everyone, as you seem to think everyone's annoyed by this topic.

if everyone was opening a thread about a rally stating just the date and the location i bet it would be annoying... prevention is the best thing always... the biggest problem in everything is when you show tolerance to incompetence/stupidity... trust me i come from a country where i have millions of examples to mention...around 10 million of them...

as for the link it doesn't work because they updated to vol.2 check the website.

So what happened to Sicily? Also not sad about Alta Marmilla - it really did string the miles out from a base north of Olbia. Now can I afford it this year and still have the cash to do the Monte in 2013? Decisions, decisions! Good news though, great event

Did you have mousse fitted, or did you have to stop and change it? ;)

I really hate cold water and both times I went in May and I refused to go in the water! I think when WRC1 went in September 2005 I think) he said it was fine...

I have time booked off for this but depending what happens I may or may not be.there, still up in the air for me.

Just a slow puncture fortunately!

Good thing about it being off season is that you don't have all the tourists around. And part of the reason i want to do it again is that the video camera i used last year wasn't that great.

In mid-October the water is not hot, but acceptable, especially if it makes the temperatures of 2011 (23-26 ° during the hottest hours), the sea is a sight few people and crystal clear water. Soon it will be online on the website of the race, for now we've created (Connexion | Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/groups/370478422964784/) - OFFICIAL PAGE) a reference to Facebook, we would be short even on Twitter.

The evidence leaks out of the race just yet ... but there could be some nice surprises, especially on Fridays, fortunately the dirt roads here, there are at least 600-700 km of roads and streets where a rally to pass safely. :)

I have booked a European holiday which just happens to coincidently take in this round of the WRC and also the Abu Dhabi F1 on the way back to Australia. Amazing how that happened. Now all I need to find is a company that does guided WRC tours. Rally Travel is obviously one such company. Are there any others that do guided tours for the Sardinia WRC that people are aware of and/or can recommend? Thanks in advance.

Rally Travel as very good, but try...

Rallytravels.com - The No.1 in Rally travels (http://www.rallytravels.com/content/se/) - good for small tours
or
Our Tours | 2011 Beijing to Paris - Itinerary & Booking | Rally Tours NZ (http://www.rallytours.co.nz/Rally-Tours/2011-B2P-Tour-Itinerary-Booking.asp) - is superb! - Going to Spain this year with them

As wrc_flipper said, Rally Travel is good, I've been in Sardinia with them in 2009 and I got an amazing assistance. Rally Travels though (ran by Per Carlsson, a former WRC co-driver) is the best I've been with. I made Sweden and Finland with them in 2008. They are just awesome! Maria Andersson (current Sandell's co-driver) was in one of the Rally Travels' hosts for Finland in 2008. Kalle Grundel and Olä Stromberg are also hosts. Listening to their stories is better than watching the tourists on the roads, as N.O.T says!

Don't know about the third choice, but it seems to be the more feasible for you guys on that side of the planet.

BTW, Rally New Zealand is in my wish list.. :D

Rally Tours NZ normally run with Rally Travel tours don't they? I'm pretty sure they did when I went to Finalnd in 2010

Why do you people prefer to go with these tours? I've done one event with tour and all the others since then on my own. I think the planning part is also fun. We've seen more spectacle for less money if we planned everything ourselves, and we had 100% freedom...

I am also bound to plan and watch the events by myself. In Sweden and Finland, when I used rally tours (RallyTravels), I preferred that way because it was my very first time in a totally different country and rally... I thought that would be "safer". In Sardinia, I used RallyTravel.com just to get the spectator accesses, but I planned and made it all by myself (it was not cheap,. though). In Argentina, I am used to going one week before the rally to drive through all the stages and waypoint the best spots. Unfortunately, some of them are not reachable by side roads, and the best of them require you to 'camp' there for the day...

Immediately after the Easter holidays, will begin work on the preparation of the route of the Rally of Italy - Sardinia 2012, which will be presented to the FIA on 16 May.
So far it is working for the realization of all four stages on gravel. Among the new stands out the hypothesis of Porto Cervo as the location of departure and arrival of the event and the fascinating hypothesis of Sassari to perform a remote service area.
Confirmed, however, the headquarters of the service park in the main Avenue of Olbia Isola Bianca.

Unfortunately Rally Travel, Rally Travels and Rally Sport have all confirmed they will not be doing guided tours this year. I have already booked my flights from Australia, but I do not want to do a self guided tour driving by myself. Does anyone know of any company doing guided tours this year? Secondly, I know it is a long shot, but is anyone doing a self guided tour who has a spare seat (happy to split costs)?

Book an accomondation, rent a car, and take a good map. Maybe it will be not more expensive than to pay to a company and you will enjoy to self discover the island.

16/08/2012 - Olbia 16th August 2012 - With the publication of the Supplementary Regulations and the opening of entries, Rally Italia Sardegna 2012 - the Italian round of the FIA World Rally Championship, organised by the Automobile Club d'Italia with the support of the Regione Autonoma della Sardegna, which will take place from 18 to 21 October - starts its engines looking ahead to the upcoming competition
.
The main changes are the four-day itinerary, the remote service in Sassari and the return of the finish
ramp and Prize Giving to Porto Cervo. Compared to the first itinerary issued, there's a decrease in
the total competitive kilometres staged, totalling 306km instead of the 360km initially scheduled. This
cut was made with an aim of reducing costs for competitors as Rally Italia Sardegna will be the
penultimate event of the World Rally Championship. On the other hand, the number of Special
Stages remains unchanged, with 16 competitive stages but with a different distribution compared to
the first version of the itinerary. Simply put, Rally Italia Sardegna 2012 - despite a slightly shorter
itinerary - will maintain all its characteristics of difficulty and endurance which made this rally one of
the most technical challenges on the WRC calendar.

The main itinerary changes concern the last day of competition on Sunday 21st October, which will
only feature two runs through the 8.24km Gallura Special Stage and not the previously announced
50km Monte Olia-Terranova stage. Otherwise only small touches have been made to the itinerary,
for example on the first day of the rally on Thursday, which will see the 28.14km Terranova stage
run twice instead of the 50km Monte Olia-Terranova.

The rally will begin with a brand new 3km Qualifying Stage in Telti on Thursday 18th October. This
stage offers an ideal terrain for the P1 and P2 drivers QS, kicking off at 11.05. The competition will
start in earnest on the same day at 15.00, when the cars leave the Isola Bianca Service Park in Olbia
and - after going through the city's main street Corso Umberto I at 15.12 - they head to the first
section of the event, now marked by two runs through the Terranova stage, located in the Monte
Olia and Terranova forester yards, covering a combined stage distance of 56.28km.
The 29.68km Monte Lerno stage will open the day on Friday 19th October. This stage includes the
famous 'Micky's Jump' which a Rally Italia Sardegna calling card from both a sporting and media point
of view. Monte Lerno will be immediately followed by the brand new Tergu-Osilo test, which will be
used for the first time in the WRC - a historical, beautiful and fast 14.88km Special Stage - used in the
golden era of the Costa Smeralda rally. The route then heads to another new stage, the 14km
Castelsardo. The rally will cover a total of 117.36km on Friday and the competitors will visit the
Remote Service Park in Sassari's Piazza Antonio Segni three times.

On Saturday 20th October the rally will be based in the well-known Monte Acuto area, covering
115.92km. The itinerary includes the classic Coiluna (29,50 km) - with the Crastazza jump - the
partially new Monti di Alŕ (14,49 km) and the Monte Olia (14,12 km) stages.

The last day of the rally on Sunday 21st October - which will cover 16.48km - features two runs
through the Gallura stage, the first one at 9.20 and the Power Stage run at 11.00. The finish will be
on Sunday at 12.45 at the Marina Vecchia in Porto Cervo.

With the publication of the Supplementary Regulations the entries for Rally Italia Sardegna also
officially open and they will close on Tuesday 18th September for the WRC competitors and on

if the FIA by the OK ... I really think there is ... the Polo WRC (Ogier? Sainz?) ... is certain, however, the presence of Skoda S2000 VW team should be 2 locks (Abbring) and perhaps a entrusted to a third car Italian rider (U: Scandola?) ... but here we are talking about rumors that do not currently have anything for sure.

In Italy it also runs the 5th round of the "Rally Class." at the start Protasov (UKR), Andis (LET), Sungkar (IND) and Trivino (MEX) on all Subaru STi

This has been an interesting thread to read, since a friend and I are headed to Sardinia for this event.

It's going to be the first WRC I'll have been to other than several in the UK over many years.

One thing I've not been able to find out is how the ticketing for the stages works. I'm used to Rally GB where there tickets are needed for each stage (or a roving ticket for the whole event) ... but I've found nothing about this in my online research.

Any info on this would be much appreciated.

Also - which stages would people recommend we headed for?
In this respsect, best parking locations (we'll be in a Shogun 4x4 if that helps) .... and best viewing locations along these stages would be invaluable info. (GPS Lat/Long would be useful if anyone has this info.)

Many thanks in anticipation.

Thanks, yes, I have all the maps/itinerary from the website. difficult to tell where along each stage is traditionally (most) "action packed" and exciting.

Accomodation .... the shogun has space for two to sleep in the back ... this is a "low budget" based tour. We'll have a tent with us too if we want some luxury! LOL!
But now we also have some spare money that was reserved for entry tickets ... so at least we can eat better than planned. :p

We should be arriving in Sardinia on the Tuesday ... so probably plenty of opportunity to meet with knowledgeable people when we are there .. and even scout out the stages.

SHOW YOUR PASSION FOR RALLY ITALIA SARDEGNA AND YOU COULD BE A GUEST OF THE ORGANISERS DURING THE 2012 EVENT

To promote this year's event (Olbia: 18th-21st October 2012), Rally Italia Sardegna launches an initiative dedicated to its fans (Rally d'Italia Sardegna | Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/rallyitaliasardegna)) alongside rally and photography enthusiasts.

Rally Italia Sardegna presents the Fan Gallery, a collection of photos - taken by spectators - which represent the unique characteristics and strong emotions offered by the Italian round of the World Rally Championship. Rally Italia Sardegna is one of the most demanding events of the WRC calendar with long and technical stages and a rough and broken terrain. It's also one of the most spectacular rallies of the season for the iconic features which originally shot it to fame - like the spectacular 'Miki's Jump' and the Su Filigosu water splash - but also for the incredibly beautiful scenery offered on the itinerary, from the gentle landscape of the coast to the power of the wild Mediterranean scrub and the granite mountains.

How better to show all the event's different facets than through the eyes of the people experiencing it from the inside, with passion and enthusiasm, trying always to find the perfect angle to shoot and capture the moment. That's why the Fan Gallery is divided into two sections - 'Adrenaline' and 'Atmosphere of Sardinia' - which together make the essence of the event.

The 'Adrenaline' theme will include all the photos capturing spectacular moments, speed, driving skills. Whilst the theme 'Atmosphere of Sardinia' is divided into six sub-categories, which represent the essential elements of Rally Italia Sardegna: Water, Rocks, Dust, Cork Oaks, Landscape and People.

Every Rally Italia Facebook fan can take part via the Spectators section of the event's website: 2012 Rally d'Italia Sardegna | 17-21 ottobre 2012 (http://www.rallyitaliasardegna.com), by sending two photos from any Rally Italia Sardegna edition since it's been part of the WRC, on one or two of the proposed themes. The photos will be published in the Fan Gallery on the website and on the official Rally Italia Sardegna Facebook page (Rally d'Italia Sardegna | Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/rallyitaliasardegna)), there will be a gallery for each theme. On 30th September 2012 the 20 photos (two from the 'Adrenaline' category and three from each 'Atmosphere' sub-category) with the largest number of 'Likes' will be part of a photo exhibition that will be created in the Service Park in Olbia during the rally.

The selected photos will also be judged by the official photographer of Rally Italia Sardegna who will choose the best image representing the spirit of the event.

The author of this image will be a guest of Rally Italia Sardegna and he/she will be staying in a hotel in Olbia throughout the rally.

All the details and technical information to enter can be found on http://www.rallyitaliasardegna.com/spectators/join-our-fan-gallery, where you can send your photos.

On the occasion of the ninth Rally Italia Sardinia 2012 that will take place in Sardinia from the 18th to the 21st October 2012 and will count for the twelfth World Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship, the Town of Ozieri, with the participation of the Department of Culture, Media, Sport, Education, Equal Opportunities, and the Department of Productive Activities and Labor Policies
organizes:
a welcoming ceremony for all the crews in transit on the 19th October 2012, during the road section of the participants through the town of Ozieri (SS).
A parking bay will be set up in Piazza Garibaldi, in order to offer all members of the crews some refreshments, with the tasting of a local dessert, the “copuletta” (Slow Food certification). Members of the FIA, ACI, CSAI and Media will be allowed to take part in the refreshments as well. There will also be two people dressed up in the typical Ozieri costume, in order to emphasize the folkloristic traditions of the town.
The aim of this event is to promote the town of Ozieri by means of this characteristic show and to generate interest towards the Rally Italia Sardinia, since it is an event of international relevance and huge importance for the Sardinian and Italian area in general.

Forgive me for perhaps getting something wrong ... but I've been entering some of the Spectator Zone locations into my satnav and fear that some GPS info may be wrong in the Spectator Guide.

For instance, SZ5 (Stage 3/8) is given as "N 40° 42,067 E 9° 09,563", but entering this into Google Maps gives a location to the north east of SZ8 (N 40° 41,212 E 9° 9,113 ... and indeed the coordinate values support this) rather than to the south east as suggested by the map.

Has anyone else checked them out and found any other errors?

The second site is 300m from the base of the hill that is the first site. So from the top of the hill (start of first site) to the second site is a total of about 600m

If you follow my flickr sequence of Prokop (includes the 3 photos before the link I posted) He comes over the crest at the start of point 1, goes down the hill, gets to the base and the final photo is about 200m from the base of the hill (first site) and is entering the water splash section (second site)

The watersplash I believe is on Su Filigoso stage which is not in this edition itinerary. Neither is the Alta Marmilla splash pictured in the link below
Solberg / Patterson Citroen DS3 WRC - Rally Italia 2011 Alta Marmilla 1 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/74mex/5736302986/in/set-72157626732003250)

Wish I were going this year, but Spain will be good.
As an aside was any other member at the Alta Marmilla splash last year? Waiting for first car, two russians thought they'd get in front of all the other togs and fans close to the stream bank. As Loeb came through they could see a wall of water coming their way and realised why no one had positioned themselves there. Too late to run, they hardly had time to turn their backs - which was amusing

Hi all. I have booked with European Sport Communication to see the rally via helicopter on Saturday and Sunday (someone posted the link a couple of weeks back). I want to see shakedown on Thursday and the stages on Friday but they don't have enough people to confirm. If anyone has a spare seat in their car for thursday and/or friday that they are willing to full (i am obviously willing to pay more than my fair share of the cost) please message me. I am currently travelling Sardinia (in Castelsardo at the moment). I will be staying in Olbia in a hotel next to the service park for the duration of the rally.

Weather will be mixed. looks like the rally will be affected by small low pressure system. That means, not to hot and not too much rain (higher possibility of rain on Fridy afternoon and Saturday morning). Daily temperature between 18..24 degrees. Still long to go, much can change.

wrc1600

Pretty much every proper gravel road you can clearly identify on Google Earth is drivable, from our experience from last last years. Also there are 2 other public areas (on South-side) that won't be closed, if you really want to be 100% sure you can drive on the roads given... ;)
Thank you, I tried once gravel road but it wasn't drivable at some point, need to try different this year.

That is what I never understand, last year road was open between runs and there was no probem, in 2010 and this year looks like it will be the same nonsens. What is the point of stage with limited access? They can configure this stage slightly different like in 2007 with access from south to the jump.

Mintexmemory
14th October 2012, 22:17
On thursday between shakedown and first stage we're going to do some recce on acces-roads everywhere around there (also for Monte Lerno), I don't think I'll have internet acces before the rally... But maybe it's not a bad idea to do the same? You're only some 20km from there for SS1 anyway... ;)

If you don't get to park on Coiluna start approach (big grassed area) then the next spectator zone by the lake is best. I would stay at Coiluna all day, it is such a varied stage
Very envious, just hope Spain will be as good as Sardinia is sure to be

Mintexmemory

bluuford
18th October 2012, 12:00
No, there will be no rain. maybe some rain in the night on the higher elevations, but there is big risk of dusk+dust combination on the second running. wind is prognosed to be less than 2 m/s and sun sets at around 7. first driver starts at 18:16, while 10th driver starts at 18:36.. and it is 28 km long stage.. that means they drive it for around 20 minutes. 10th driver should finish at 18:56

Edit: sunset should be around 18:38 on the location of the stage.. nearly the finishing time for first driver on the road

Loeb and Mikko won't finish the stage before it's dark though, so it's not only dust which is a problem. I'd say Tanak and Petter have the best start positions - not sweeping, not too much dust, and finish before dark.

And Loeb is just a little bit taller than the #5 kid... and some are saying he is the biggest champion ever..

Has some image guru made him ditch the big black frames to make him look ' plus au fait et moins le geek!' ... just wondering.

I think that Latvala, Petter and Ott is going to make the best stage times for this evening. It's going to be a lot of dust hanging and the others will loss some time there! Specielly on second run! I'm sure about that! Just waiting now for colin and becsy to go live on radio! :)

Latvala remembers 2009, when he was leading after day2, and beating the rivals by far running first on the road on day3, because of the dust.

And he also remembers Catalunya 2011, last stage on Friday was on gravel, in dark... He lost a lot to Loeb, who was running first.
