This is the main thread for Fantasy Grand Prix. The 2012 edition is now up and running!

A few things of note this season:

The deadline for submitting an entry has been extended to the end of the day, March 16th.
Your third driver choice, which costs £1m, is any driver that does not appear on the price list.

Our website has been updated to reflect the 2012 season. 2011 overall standings have been archived. All Grand Prix pages will be blanked out once the first race of the season begins.

The website to look over the Rules and Price List is here: Fantasy Grand Prix (http://sites.google.com/site/2009fgp/)

Once you have a team in mind please return to this thread and post your team. Please follow the rules on the website regarding team submission.

As always, thanks to those who read and those who join. Without your interest this game would have about six teams total!!!

Some really hard choices to make this year. Great pricing break down, it makes it very difficult to cover both good chassis, engines, and drivers.

That said, here is the winning entry for the 2012 season. :D

Thanks! This year I decided to split everything in half - top half double digits, bottom half single digits. My hope is to try and not make chassis/engine or drivers to be the reason a team wins.

We'll see if it works.

I think the pricing is making it tough to pick. And that's a good thing. The way you set it up might make for some interesting selections this year. I know it certainly made me slow down in selecting my strategy for the year. :D

I would have loved to take Hamilton, but it just could not work on the budget.
maybe next year if the drivers were a little cheaper and the chassis and engines a bit higher, it would force people to chose drivers instead of safely resting on the teams ( LOL like I did) and hope for the occasional outstanding performance to supplement my points. In that way you get more variables and less folks choosing the RBR/Renault package with cheap drivers.
But that being said, I'm happy with my team, and this year's pricing

Prices will definitely change in 2014 when the new rules go into effect. If it is true that Pure, Volkswagen (Audi branded is the rumor) are coming in as engine suppliers and there will be more teams (my hope, no real rumors of it) then I will make some changes.

Until then I have to balance it the best I can so that people can't choose a Vettel-xx-xx-xx-Renault team!

N. Jones
15th February 2012, 21:41
It would be nice to have more engines. Having a lineup of Renault, Mercedes, Ferrari, Cosworth, Pure, and Audi would be sweet.
It would be even sweeter if Honda came back and if BMW came back as a full team.
That would be eight engines and a lot more choices!! :D

[quote="truefan72"]I would have loved to take Hamilton,..../QUOTE]

I would like to do that too but I can't justify centering the team around one driver (or team) unless I felt that they would take a big step forward.

To be honest that is what we do with team Bouche, Pussy Cat! - experiment and see if centering around a driver makes sense.
Case in point - I calculated what a team would have finished with if they went with the following:
Vettel-D'ambrosio/Glock/Karthikeyan/Kovalainen/Trulli-3rd driver-HRT/Virgin-Cosworth-some bonus GP.
Vettel is 32, Cosworth is 7, HRT is 3/Virgin is 4, 3rd driver is 1, one of Kovalainen and Trulli was 5, D'Ambrosio/Glock were 3 I think, and Karthikeyan was 2, so it easily falls at or under 48 mil.

Consider:
Vettel won 11 races and a Cosworth engine finished in each of those races. 25 for the win and 12 for the cosworth is 37 points. 37 times 11 is 407 points.
Vettel finished fourth once, so that plus Cosworth's standard 12 points is 24.
Vettel finished 3rd once, so that plus 12 points is 27.
Vettel finished 2nd five times, so that plus 12 points each is 150.
Vettel snagged pole 15 times, so that is 30 points.
Vettel had three fastest laps, so that is 3 points.
Add it up and you get 641 points. If we say this fictional team choose a bonus GP that Sebastian won then we add an extra 37 points.
That takes us to 678. This team would have finished 32nd overall last year.

So far the answer is no, centering around one driver does not equal success.

I did not say centering around one driver equals success, and i did complement you twice on the pricing
what I was saying was that if the cost of the drivers were lower and the cost of everything else higher
you would see more folks picking a wider variety of drivers and more variables ( since they are 22 drivers out there as opposed to 11 chassis and 4 engines)

you have to understand that many times there is an irrational factor associeted with these things like folks liking a particular driver, or team.
Undoubtedly, in any system, it would be impossible to pick a Vettel RBR combo, Alonso ferrari combo, or hamilton mclaren combo

anyway, we'll see what happens in 2014 and hopefully with more teams, drivers and engines, there will be a wider pool to pick from

cheers

Oh, truefan - I wasn't mad at you! I was just complimenting what you said by making two points:
1) My sister and I use her team to try and see if we can find a good balance between a top driver and a chassis/engine.
2) I was curious to see how a team would finish if it choose Vettel.

Both points show, so far, that having a top driver doesn't equal a top 20 finish.

Maybe. The good thing is Hamilton is worth 23 so you have some room to put in a good team. Hamilton-Mercedes is only 35; that still gives you 13 to find a second driver, 3rd, which is always 1 mil, and a chassis that will put up points, if not big points.

I think it is time I put up my top ten challenger for 2012:

Ladies and Gents, here is POSF1 Sponsored by HP!

As reported last year, the POS has signed a deal with McLaren-Mercedes to be its car supplier. We feel that with Jensen Button's emergence it is only a matter of time until one of their drivers become champion again.

After a long deliberation we have finally decided on our two drivers and one reserve driver:

Daniel Ricciardo, Jules-Eric Vergne, and Sebastian Buemi. Three STR drivers who should continue putting up points, so long as they do not hit anybody.

Lastly, our bonus GP is South Korea, where McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton took a great win.

To summarize:

Buemi: 1

Bahrain, Europe, Hungary, Singapore, UAE.

Monaco - 3 (Surprising low, this is usually one of the popular races)
Canada - 1

Question, and I hope those who choose Australia will look here and answer:

Why so many for Australia?

And why is there such a disparity of bonus GP's?? In previous years people always choose Australia, Monaco, Canada, Italy, and Brazil, with Belgium not far behind.
This year the bonus GP's are much more spread out.

I chose Australia because I figured that winter testing results -- on which I based my team -- will reflect best in the first GPs, and not so well as the season goes on and cars are modified.

I picked Monaco again this year... not sure why everyone else is switching around.

Are you going to show the people that have already used their Bonus GP in the results this year?

Another question, not that I think it will pertain to my drivers. But for the polesitter to get the extra points do they have to finish in the points, or for that matter even finish the race?

Everyone above us has blown their load on the Aus GP so we're looking good

Between us it's going to come down to Di-Resta and Kovy vs Hulk and Riccardo. I think you have the slight edge on me there with both your drivers able to take points but poor old Kovy looks a bit dead in the water unless he gets parachuted into Massa's seat :D

Yeah I've gone out on a bit of a limb (as have you) this year taking both McLaren & Merc. If McLaren fall in a hole mid season we are a dead duck.

I went for Spa as my bonus due to the fact my picks are weighted towards McLaren and I think they do quite well there, not to mention Force India have always been strong there too - hence Hulk.

What happens if Bahrain gets cancelled??????????????????

I'm also very surprised not many people picked Riccardo, time will tell I guess.

Considering I already have the engine and chassis of top teams, Grosjean will be the key to my season. Hopefully Lotus stays strong and he can actually start getting lots of good points as promise and potential for that are already there. Current P24 isn't that bad considering I got no driver points in Oz. But Romain needs to deliver from now onwards. :)

I had a really hard time picking my team this year, especially when it came to drivers. As much as I like and root for some of the other drivers, I thought with my combination of chassis and engine that Perez would be a good "bang for the buck". I did consider both Grosjean and Kimi, but have them covered with the engine choice at least.

Question, and I hope those who choose Australia will look here and answer:

Why so many for Australia?

Easy. My fantasy GP is based on pre-season testing and the first day of practice in Australia. Teams form changes during the season, as they have different development strategies, and I have no way of predicting that, whereas their form is probably going to be close to testing. So I pick Australia, the first race as my GP as I think race will more likely simulate pre-season testing than any of the other races.

Of course the fact that I live in Melbourne is a bonus!

aryan
20th March 2012, 00:23
Well, my last minute changes seem to have paid off. Had I gone with my original choice of Red Bull and Renault, it wouldn't have looked good at all.

My team, Mt Damavand finished second, which is still a very good outcome, especially as I lost both drivers. I need Vergne and Hulk to do well this year and score points.

The real winners of this GP are of course curry and Knock-on, they did extremely well, but something tells me that Maclaren isn't going to win every race this year, I think I am with a good shot of a podium finish (hopefully).

I agree that McLaren won't win every GP but I think they are poised to become champs in one category at least. Button is now a great driver and he is showing me that Hamilton is like Alonso: he is either #1 or he is an unhappy boy.

3rd today with no bonus GP, I am happy with that.

Hamilton -3rd
Vergne - first points (good lad)
Sauber - 2nd place
Ferrari engine top 2.

How fortunate was I, the only reasonable certainty was Hamilton. One of those strange F1 days

A mid-table 26th for my team, Mt Damavand F1 racing, bringing me down to 3rd in the overall.

Oh well, I don't expect Ferrari to win many races this year, so this probably will go down the season as the outlier. Still feeling good about my prospects this year. And Vergne is doing better than I thought.

As a team principal I will have a few words with Grosjean. He is costing valuable points for the team and as a result we are a long way behind in the championship. Grosjean shall raise his game considerably or else I will consider signing up a new driver for 2013. :p : Grosjean is killing me!!! Oz, and, Maylasia. Thanks for adding the *'s, it sure helps get a handle on where one's team sits! I'm glad that both Hulkie and Vergne nabbed points, but I fear I've actually gone too far with buying up good car bits and went too cheap with the drivers. I basically have to hope that FI and STR stack up well in the midfield over the course of the season so the drivers continue to score points.

OUTSTANDING race for Akai13. Sixty four (yes 64) points in a non bonus GP race. Well called! He is now 11 points ahead of all others that still have to run their bonus GP.

Sentinel Racing and owner Colin Edwards now have the top scoring race of 2012 with 106 points at Malaysia.

As for me, I'm really liking that Perez is my driver. :) Tied for 14th overall, and tied for 5th among those still to use their bonus GP. Remember, at any time you can all quit and declare me winning for the season. Otherwise I'm going to have Sergio open a can of whoop butt on the field and humble some world champions. My plan is that at my bonus GP (Monaco) he will qualify on pole, turn fasted lap and then win, giving me a quick boost of umm... errrr.... LOTS of points. :D

With the thus far shocking changes to the teams, and the drivers as well, this season could have a lot of potential winners.

All pit crews better watch out, he will finally make it there but end up in the wrong pit stall! But it won't be a worry for our young battler, he will run over all opposition in his quest to score in the top six!

I have to admit, if Roman can settle down a little bit he has a lot of potential. He has impressed in the Lotus (I still want to say Renault). He and Kimi were a reason for me wanting Renault engines, along with the Red Bulls of course.

Last year Kobayashi was my secret weapon, but for some reason I was more inclined to get Perez as a driver this year. That may well be that his performance will plummet very soon. But I hope not.

Credit were credit is due. I was trying to figure out the max points that could possibly be earned in a single race, but it made my head hurt. Since budgets don't allow the very best car, driver, engine combos to be purchased (except for possibly a back of the grid team, and they don't win) it can be a tricky process.

I don't think there is a team that can be made that sees every selection score points in every race.

I was thinking of it in a "long shot" scenario. In theory it's possible that if you have the winning driver, car, chassis, pole, and fast lap you could score 78 points, or 156 if a bonus GP. Though I personally consider 50 (or 100 bonus GP) a good race based on the reality of budget constraints.

Here's the cost of top teams that should win races, including 1 million for 3rd driver:

RED BULL - 38
MCLAREN - 33
FERRARI - 28

This cost is: team's chassis, engine, and a 3rd driver (mandatory for all FGP teams).
With the top three teams the best driver you could 'sign' is Grosjean & Perez for Red Bull, the same plus Kobayashi and di Resta for McLaren, and Schumacher on down for Ferrari.

With the budget the way it is no one team can choose the top three teams' driver-chassis-engine and get the full points for a win. Take into consideration that if you could choose the above you would only be able to choose one of these teams' drivers (It's out of the question to increase the budget to that point and I would never increase it so you could choose the defending WCC).
The only teams where you can hope for full points would be Force India (di Resta-Hulkenberg-3rd dvr-Force India-Mercedes),
Lotus (Raikkonen-4mil or less-3rd dvr-LotusF1-Renault) and Sauber (Perez-12mil or less-3rd dvr-Sauber-Ferrari).

I just cannot see STR, Williams, Caterham, HRT, and Marussia winning a race.

These are the only teams that we can build within the 48 mil budget:

Force India, Sauber, STR, Williams, Caterham, HRT, Marussia.

airshifter
2nd April 2012, 09:25
That just goes to show how much the budget comes into the picture. IMO budget bumps would make the FGP far too easy and/or more predictable, since we could get top teams and drivers without running out of money.

It looked like Kimi was on ice. After such a great race it was a shame to see that happen.

I've found a good balance this year. Though Perez is my FGP driver some of my favorite drivers aren't on the team, and none of them have both the chassis/engine combo. Due to that even if my FGP race sucks I at least got the satisfaction that some of my favorite drivers did good.

And though I'm happy for Rosberg, this last race for the most part I sucked at FGP and my personal favorites didn't do very well either. Oh well, it could be worse.

Very excited about this weekend, which happens to be my 'home race'. I was looking at the championship points, team line-ups and made some calculations. Conclusion is that as long as Red Bull and McLaren remain frontrunners (with RBR being preferably ahead) and Lotus behind them as solid points contenders from 5th onwards, my team should have a real chance at competing for the championship. Hence the excitement and now this weekend need some good double points to make the challenge become reality. :)

The team I am very wary of in the title race - it's your team, Mr N. Jones. :p : If STR comes good and Vergne starts scoring more points, I could have trouble in keeping up with you. In this case I'd need RBR to really outperform McLaren.

N. Jones
13th May 2012, 06:20
Well thanks!

You don't have much to worry about now since Hammy is starting last and Jense hates his car.

This also means that Hamilton will lose the two points for pole position. These points will now go to Maldonado.

N. Jones
13th May 2012, 06:22
jens - you hit the nail on the head - IF STR comes good. SO far they have been mostly fighting for 15-17th. I can Ricciardo scoring more points but Vergne will be better next year.

jens
13th May 2012, 08:36
So far this weekend isn't making it too easy for me. Mercedes looks set only for 3rd best score among engines (hence Hamilton DQ was complicating things), RBR needs a big effort to get among Top3 teams. Grosjean is up there, but can he deliver big points (at the very least a podium)? I need at least 2x43 points from this race to tie with Rocky Road (second team in FGP championship), who has the same picks as me for the season. Which means that if I fail to match him after this race, the championship is over.

The result is a disappointment. Red Bull let me down big time, basically costing the championship. :( When I was picking my home race before the season, I was thinking that Barcelona should be a suitable circuit for RBR and as Barcelona doesn't usually offer any upsets, they should comfortably collect a big score there for my FGP team. Wow, didn't expect to move up to P2 this weekend, but Red Bull perhaps slighly unexpectedly saved the weekend for me. After all, only joint 14th in the race, but other front-runners did even worse.

Between Red Bull, Mercedes & the Hulk, I got my first decent points haul of the season!

I'm (or my team is) improving. Hoping the trend continues

This is the first time I've bothered checking the standings since Australia. How I managed 10th is beyond me.

OUCH, I placed all my chips on Hamilton and Merc - no panning out the way I thought it would :(

Well that's a bummer. Stop by and join us more often! This is the only sane thread on the forum! :D

Not only one of the only sane threads, but one filled with armchair warriors as well. But really considering how heated the debates get in the other part of the forum, it seems that on the FGP thread we can all laugh at ourselves after terrible races, and those doing good are humble in victory. Quite opposite of what you might expect.

I'm still struggling as of late. I burned a bonus GP for a really crappy score. I better hope I can pull some pit girls with my standings before I'm a complete back of the packer! :)
