You`re right Chris. :s mokin:
Penske ordered 2 PC11-Chevy`s after Indy and at least one assembled and arrived to States. It was normally aspirated V-8 and Penske hired AAR engine man Stump Davis to oversee the operation (Karl Kainhofer was original Penske`s engine man.)Chief mech was regular Penske`s "spare car" mech Clive Howell. Mears tried it firstly at Elkhart Lake practice, i believe this picture has taken.Later Penske even bought March83C from Brayton Racing(Pat Bedard`s car) after Pocono and run it in Pennzoil colours at Laguna Seca practice .

Though you'd all get a kick out of this photo of Johnny Carson getting ready to turn some laps in a Lotus turbine.
The car Carson drove wasn't a Lotus. The Lotuses were a mid-engine wedge shape. The car Johnny drove was the Granatelli/Pratt & Whitney turbine with the side mounted engine (on the left with the driver on the right). I remember seeing the film of Johnny's drive (not video in the '60's) on the Tonight Show.
The picture below is the 1967 Granatelli Turbine. This view shows the side-by-side engine and driver locations clearly. Also here's a link to a color photo of the Granatelli STP Team. That's Andy Granatelli in the red blazer with his brothers Vince and Joe on each side. http://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/photo/build_photo_ims.php?photo_id=13169&size=med
Here's a link to a picture of Joe Leonard in the Lotus turbine 1968 and another to a larger version of the Carson picture

I believe it's a Paxton designed car with a Pratt & Whittney turbine buillt for Granatelli's team. That is how it is list in the info on turbine cars. Granatelli liked the idea of a turbine car after seeing one at the speedway few years before. Then went to Paxton to have a car designed and built.

I'm never one to give up on a good thread, so here's more news from Phoenix Spring 1971.
According to Racing Pictorial, there were three other cars at Phoenix that do not appear on the results. Presumably they were too slow to qualify. One was Rick Muther in the #54 Adams Turbine but the other two are a puzzle to me.
First here's Bruce Walkup in the #98 Agajanian entry. Is this the Wolverine? It looks like the #98 from Indy 70 but also like the #97 from Indy 71. But the #97 from Indy 71 is said to be a Brabham!? I'm confused.

That is true - when was the lat time you saw 4 makes and at least 3 different manufacture year in one photo on race day??
That being said - it seems like, whne left to their own devices, everything starts to converge on the best idea anyway (Miller, Offy, Kurtis, Watson, McLaren & Eagle, March & Lola) - but they are not even allowed to try to be innovative anymore.....
I know they have to restrict thing more these days - but couldn't they go back to anything that fits a certian size box is ok (with some other basic rules thrown in - especially regarding safety). then they could maybe go with a 2 liter turbo and fiddle with boost to keep power under 1,000hp.
oh well - no point in getting too misty eyed - isn't going to happen anytme soon....
or perhaps there is a poster here with lots of $$ that wants to start a third series??? ;)

wow - do I feel like an old timer now :( I have 20 years on you and I thought I was still "young" :D
Anyhow, glad to have younger fans that don't remember much before the great schism..... shows maybe AOWR is not totally helpless at this time...
Anyhow - if you are interested in digging some more I'll give you some hints (and some idea of how I look at these pictures when I have no clue what I am looking at):
1. photo is not much older than you
2. This was (as near as I can tell) the second to last CART appearance for Ongais.
3. Since it is in the 80's you can pretty much safely guess either Lola or March and be right 90% of the time
4. Since it does not have a push rod (someone correct me if I have that term wrong/backwards) it narrows down the car type down
5. It doesn't have a pointy roll bar (big clue to what year car it is NOT once you figure out the above suspension thing).
6. It is a pretty slick looking car and looks like the tub and bodywork are one and the same - another clue to general time....
Good luck - I don't know about everyone else but I have fuin following little clues like these....

Transmission trouble ended his day on lap 2.Gregor Foitek drove Foyt`s own Copenhagen car at Surfers Paradise.

Our primary car is a 2003 Honda Odyssey which we just put an overhead DVD player in and are bitingthe bullet and putting on a trailer hitch so we can haul all of our bikes (my wife is too short to reach a roof rack...). Like you, I never imagined we'd drive a mini-van but it is pretty nice....
Having previously owned a couple of warmed over Mustangs and a Honda S2000 it bothers me a bit that I only aspire to a slightly nicer minivan for our next vehicle - but - hey - the kids are a blast..... :p

swift, David Epringham, 1997? If this is wrong then i give up. Don't know of many references to find out about drivers and cars. CC doens't give very much info past like 2001.

You are Correct Chris.
The photo is during practice at Long Beach. Adrian Fernandez did not like the Swift at all so Patrick ran year old Reynard for him until a new Reynard arrived. The #20 car switch back and forth on there car for the rest of the year. Now you now the rest of the story.
Your Turn.
