Age has nothing to do with it (Mercedes just hired a guy a couple of years ago who is in his early 40's) but you do need to get your super-license.
After you've taken care of that there are two main variables you'll need to consider - money & talent. The less you have of one, the more you'll need of the other.
Other minor variables to consider:
Nationality - being German, British, Indian or Japanese seems to help.
Race Experience - learning your craft in NA will work against you.
