March 24, 2012 will be a fantastic day for all the Portuguese rally fans. We can expect a crowd of Portuguese and Spanish fans. Will wake the "sleeping monster". The current WRC drivers will feel very small ...

Im from Portugal so I might be a bit biased, however I think it's one of the top 4 rally's from the calendar regarding stages. Acess are easy even for foreigners, roads are quite ok but of course there are some gravel roads leading to spectator zones. People are also very friendly, you know, that rally family feeling and Algarve is quite nice if you want to come back from stages and have a beer with your mates. Food and accomodation aren't expensive and it's quite easy to find something.

been to rally portugal (from uk) for past 2 years and if you are after perfect location it would probably be vilamoura or albufeira,we stay in lagos, which is a bit further out of the way but is where a friend owns a villa.while i have not found the stages to be poor, the marshalls/gnr do not make it easy to move around which is frustrating. does anyone have any tips on gnr avoidance?

It would be very difficult all competitors entering the World Rally Sprint. It would be very expensive for the private cars and a problem of logistic for the organization.

Thanks. Some drivers I use to see in the Portuguese Rally Open.
Last year I was at Lisbon, but this year I'll miss it. I'll prefer to arrive early to Ourique. Waiting for Fafe!

You're right he's not the typical tourist who's wanting to do a program in WRC with a WRC. So it's now maybe a pity that he doesn't start. He's not even 22 but 21 years old.

I know I'm going to be mocked for this, but would anyone care to explain what this Fafe Rallysprint actually is? How come only half the drivers did stage 1, and half do stage 2? And how many stages are there? I haven't been this confused about a rally since, well, ever!

rbatista82
24th March 2012, 17:41
Fafe Rally Sprint is a promotion event from the “antique” Rally of Portugal. The stage runned is the famouse Fafe-Lameirinha and this is a way of testing a possible return from the Rally of Portugal to the north, and a way o showing the passion fans from Portugal.

Some drivers swap because this is a promotion event, and they don’t have all the cars at the north, because the real rally is at the south…

Well... in a way yes! But the in another way, and probably the sad truth about it! Money reasons! Algarve it's the biggest tourist point in Portugal so they moved the rally there hopping to have more spectators and more money from the Tourism Minister!

The stages are really cool, not like the North ones but really cool... but unfortunatly in Algarve the tourist want to go to the beach and play golf, instead of watching rally in the middle of nowhere! Here in the North there is a big affluence of fans, and the Spanish people come too!

People tend to forget that Portuguese spectator's behaviour improved largely in the 90’s.

The security reasons advanced in order to pull off Portugal from WRC where directly linked with nightmare weather conditions of the 2001 rally.

Alongside the urgent need to promote Germany to WRC, FIA inspectors showed very little tolerance to issues like security cars evacuation, schedule delays and stages cancellation that messed up Portugal rally organizers efforts.

To public opinion it was easier to keep pushing the spectator’s behaviour key...

Somehow this prejudice leaded organizers to look for different locations. The much less crowded Algarve come out, hold up by magnificent stages and handy facilities – hotels, airport, stadium, etc. – highly suitable to clover leaf rally format.

It’s soon to say that Portugal rally will come back to his inborn scenery, the North, but today exhibition won’t surely be forgotten.

WRC is a popular sport - it's a great shame it has been ruined by trying so hard to replicate racing. If Jean Todt really is serious about saving rallying he should make sure it has its own identity as a sport.
