IMO the Great Orm looks quite scary. Lowest elevation is 20 m and highest elevation 130 m and not much room for errors on the right side.

But this is crazy. Monte 1964 run on this stage in the dark when the gravel road was covered with snow and ice. By the book it’s 600 m to the bottom of the “ditch”. Does anyone know where this Esparrone road is?

Do you have any pictures of scary, dangerous or crazy places in some stages?

There's a couple of places in Dyfi and Gartheiniog this year with big fresh air drops on the outside of a few bends.

For me stage Lantosque - Lucerám of Monte Carlo. Part of the road is surrounded only by a tiny wall (like 10-20 cm high), part by nothing. We usually drive through to Turini and sitting on the "wrong" side especially in a high thing like VW Transporter doesn't make me feel good :) When I asked Štajf what he thinks about it, he told me that it's good to run it in the dark as You can't see down :D

Here a screen from google street view, close to Lantosque.

From our stages it is definitely last third of Pindula in the opposite direction to the current one (last run in 2007). It's crazy fast downhill in the wood on a road which is so angled that with normal car You are still touching ground even in a very slow speed...

The videos look dangerous but at the same time they are spectacular.

I don’t know how scary this is but it’s a video when Petter made the ever-fastest time on Ouninpohja.

WRC - Petter Solberg Onboard WR - Ouninpohja - Part 1 - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I_EHrDZRvQ)

3:20 the big jump. If I remember correctly Markko came to this jump with a speed of 178 km/h when he made the record jump.

5.50 This is also an interesting jump because there’s a right hand corner just after the jump. The jump doesn’t look so deep on the video but it’s a quite deep jump to the bottom (as Colin made it).

6:24 here starts the fast section as you can probably hear from the engine sound.

There is a stage on the Safari (or it might have been Argentina) where the cars drive along a ridge of a mountain with vertical drops on either side.
I remember seeing footage of a Subaru driving along it, possibly Colin in the mid 90's.

That would be my pick.

EDIT: just noticed OldF's post, I think were thinking of the same stage.

And keep in mind the fact that nowadays you cannot open your window! It is pretty impossible to open the door under the water. And it is very hard to press out even the plastic window.

Did you heard the sound of flying spring? (during the second crash), this is the sceariest here.

For me, the sceariest stage was SS9 (last stage) I am sitting inside the corner at 2:33. The average speed of the stage is 128 km/h but GrN cars drive something like nearly 2 minutes around 200 km/h on that stage :-)

Infamous = notorious. They dont forgive, rocks everywhere.
The 19k stage starts at sea level, rises to 170meters above and then dives back into Jossingfjord, and then up again on the other side, over the mountain and down again to Ana Sira. The elevation doesnt show that good in the video but adds yet another dimension to the stage.

The rally has only been driven for 3 years, we started it 2009 and have expanded ever since, now looking at approx 100 km stages for 2012. Its located between Stavanger and Kristiansand on the south-western coast, close to ferries from the continent. Hoping for more international participation, so the 2012 date is the weekend before Germany.

You can almost hear the hundreds of rally stories echoing through the forest. :)

I've had this idea of making a book about the most famous and most respected rally stages. I think that would be nice to read and also nice to learn about. So - why not trying to make a community effort? We have now these photobook companies that print out books for reasonable prices. I've used Blurb (http://www.blurb.com/)to make my books and I've been happy with their quality. Some 200-paged hardcover (25x20 cm) w/ dust jacket cost about €50 - and if you order it with some promotion code - they often have -25% codes - it's even better. And it would make an online shop once published.

Is this a silly idea? We have the knowledge. We'd take 30-35 stages, each presented over 4-8 pages or so with pictures, a stage map and the story, it would fill up the 200 pages. Stages could be from each round of WRC and IRC 2012 (stages not necessarily run in 2012) and then few from WRC rounds not included in 2012 (Safari, Australia, for example) and some national or ERC rounds.

This would be absolutely non profit, the book would cost the cheapest option where ever we would choose to print it (I would recommend a service like Blurb's, each book printed at time, no printruns, no financial risks). We would need free pictures from the stages (on and/or off rallies), stories written about the stages, their history and meaning and perhaps someone with good handling of some graphic program to provide simple stage maps. Plus someone natively English speaking to proofread it all. I'm willing to coordinate as long as there wouldn't be any tight schedules expected.

What do you think?

Ouninpohja from Finland would be an easy choice, just like Panzerplatte from Germany. But what would be the other stages? I know the images but I don't remember the stages... Monte Carlo, Turini? Sweden, Sågen? Or Colin's Crest? New Zealand, Whaanga Coast? Of course! But what's the name of the Catalunyan stage with the hairpin in front of the high bridge, Argentinian stage with the moonscape ending, Sardegna stage with the big jump - or that Turkish stage with Mentos/Saliyk jump? Jordan's Baptism Site for a historical story? Deep ditches in Ypres? The challenge of Pindula or the atmosphere of the best super special stage in the world of Zlín? The -40 degrees temperatures of Arctic Rally? The mist that M-Sport couldn't see in Bulgaria? The damned last SSS of Poland! Now where were the huge crowds in Portugal in the late 90s when Loix had his one off-shine in WRC - or Latvala his multiple rolls? Or those multiple jumps in Australia, or the one with the deep water in the end? Now, what was the name of the stage when Sainz lost in all in '98 GB? Corsica and Henri Toivonen, do we need to go there? Acropolis - there must be one stage that destroys more cars than others. What about Sanremo? Valais, Var or Jänner? Lõuna Eesti ralli? Safari for crying out loud!?!

That´s a very good idea. (Besides I´d think someone could write a book of all the classic stages in 1000 Lakes/Jyväskylän Suurajot/NORF as well - a book with so many memories)

But of course the book you´ve suggested will become a classic if it will be for real. I´m in and try to write some lines of some stages. You could well become personal in writing.

I finally found something.

Part 3 from 3:02 to 3:17. Looks like the place I’ve mentioned. I remember seeing it from a different angle.

Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic (http://www.eastafricansafarirally.com/2011/videos.html)

Beginning of part 3 is from day 4 and by the route map (http://www.eastafricansafarirally.com/2009/downloads/EASCR%20Overview%20Map%202009.pdf) I think this spot is somewhere on the Mbulu hills around Lake Manyara.

Looks like this spot (http://maps.google.fi/maps/myplaces?ll=-3.703662,35.551243&spn=0.002532,0.005284&vpsrc=6&ctz=-120&t=h&z=18). Nice scenery. Maybe I’ve should added the thread name also spectacular stages.

I found it too:
WRC Rally Championships 'In the End' HD - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvTt4m5do8I)
right at the beginning of the video.
