View Full Version : BTCC 2012 Rumours

Time to start this one up I think, with quite a few stories emerging for next year.

What's confirmed....

Dynamics to switch to NGTC with two Honda Civics for Matt Neal & Gordon Shedden[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
Welch Motorsport to continue with their Proton, possibly with a second car[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
Thorney Motorsport to enter a pair of Vauxhall Insignia NGTCs[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
TH Motorsport to run an NGTC Skoda Octavia for Matt Hamilton[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
Triple Eight building and running an as yet unspecified NGTC spec car next season[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
Eurotech Racing returning with Andy Jordan in yet another unspecified NGTC car.[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
The only non-NGTC entry to be announced so far, Special Tuning Racing intend to continue running a two car SEAT Leon team next season, with the possibility of also running a single car WTCC entry.[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
What's highly likely....

Rob Austin Racing continuing with the Audis for next season, possibly with a third car.[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
Dynojet returning with the Avensis for Wrathall, possibly with some Toyota backing, and the team are aiming to run a second car next season.[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
WSR switching to a, as yet, unnamed NGTC package.[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
I believe Motorbase aren't quite as tied to the S2000 Focus as it might seem. The money to buy them came from Griffin and things appear to be slightly uncertain as to what he and the team will be doing next season. They'll be on the grid one way or another though.[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
RML are set to develop an NGTC Cruze for next season.[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
Techspeed have stated they hope to have NGTC engines in their Cruze next season.[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
Geoff Steel Racing is hoping to run a pair of turbo-charged BMW 320si's next season.[/*:m:3ehojx6p]
Who might be leaving....

Arena have talked about switching to the WTCC for next season, although this has gone slightly cold of late. They seem unwilling to do so without Ford backing, which hasn't been forthcoming yet. Have stated they are opposed to NGTC cars.[/*:m:3ehojx6p]

Hmm, that seems a strange one. From a RWD GT-lite car, into a brick of a FWD Touring car.....surely you'd want to progress into GT/Sportscar racing, not crash-bang-wallop tin tops??

OK, time for an update as to where we are for 2012. It's really not that positive so far sadly:

Committed/Likely

Honda: Fully signed up and building NGTC cars.
Dynojet: Set to be back, probably with 2 cars running GT Supercup winner.
Rob Austin: Returning with their A4s.
Welch: Will return with Proton.
Pirtek: Two Honda Civic NGTCs confirmed.
Thorney: Pair of Insiginia NGTCs confirmed.

Uncertain

Chevrolet: No concrete news, hard to tell which way this one will go.
WSR: No news whatsoever regarding their 2012 plans.
Triple Eight: Have announced NGTC intention but its gone rather quiet.
STR: Have talked about NGTC, but also possible WTCC plans.
Techspeed: New cars this year, don't want to continue without NGTC engines minimum, likely to be partly dependent on what Chevrolet do.
Speedworks: Hughes dipped in and out this season and was not competitive. Not seen the car up for sale however.
ES: Said they were going to run 2x NGTC cars; but have failed to make further announcements they said they would be making.
AmD: Not committed to next season yet.

Leaving

Arena: Switching to WTCC
Motorbase: Off to GTs (allegedly)
GSR: BMWs up for sale.
Central Group: Said they don't want to run Integra again, can't afford NGTC car as it stands

Are you serious? STR has been one of the biggest bull****ters of recent years. Confirmed two cars in 2010, said three cars minimum in 2011, entered one. Beyond running Tom Boardman in the series he chooses, I don't see any additional entries by STR as even likely! Only reason they got two cars up and running this year is because Dave was desperate for a drive after GSR didn't work out. From reading what he had to say about the experience, he will NOT be going back!

I would put Motorbase in the 'Uncertain' section. They have a few options open to them for 2012. The BTCC is one of them. As someone has posted on another forum, they hope to be back, but nothing decided.

If WSR and Chevrolet are too return (and that is pretty much certain) they will have to use a turbo at the very least.

That's right. NGTC is what they want to do. It won't be with a Volvo.

I think you will see fewer NGTC cars than expected now that the price of these things have reached £200k without an engine!
And you could double that price for teams that have to build and develop them.

So you could still see a few 'serious contenders' using S2000 cars but with NGTC power.

I was thinking along those lines too. Tom Boardman won in one last year, Newsham has experience with them, Lehmann produce a decent turbo engine for them and there should be a fair number of Leons to buy if ES Racing dream of running three or four cars (I can only see them running two but I'll be happy to be proven wrong).

i don't know to be honest, something to do with there Vauxhall background i guess. i find them a little. i don't know, slimmy after what they did at the end of 2009. im being silly i know but yeah most likely to do with there Vauxhall background as i was never a Vauxhall fan after Plato left. if RML /Chevy have pulled out and the Plato thing did end up coming true then i mite support 888 purely because Plato was driving for them. While I wish him all the luck in the world and while I like to see new faces on the grid, some of the points made on the eBay page are ludicrous. Here are my edited highlights:

The Silverstone Classic is going to be the largest event ever in motorsport history.
The BTCC has a global audience reach of 11bn people.
20 million people watched EACH race last year (that would make the BTCC the top 10 most-watched broadcasts of last year in the UK, beating the Royal Wedding by 7 million viewers for EVERY round!)
BTCC is more popular than Premiership Football.
Attracts more spectators than the British GP (strictly true but not in the sense that is being implied)

I know these are tough times, but if I were a potential sponsor, I'd be really pissed off about being mislead.

EDIT: After a Google search it seems the forums over at Ten-Tenths also found these stats to be a little alarming. http://www.ten-tenths.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3021119
