I thought that FIA rules were that 10% of the km's must have been driven before ss times can be used for the running order for the day after. It would be ridiculous if for example Hirvonen makes a spin on the first one, and he has to start as last on the first (real) day...

But i think they decided that shakedown will act as a qualification next year so that the fastest on shakedown gets to pick his running order. Start as first you mean since he would be the slowest and has to decide last. Not sure how many cars that would go for.

Yesssssss the first snow was falling last nigt so now there i about 10centimeters and there will be more this week.

What kind of temperatures you've been having? Are the roads getting properly frozen before heavier snowing?

In Finland the first rally of the year, Juniors and Ladies FRC event Jämsä Ralli was cancelled already due to lack of frost and snow. It would mean hell of a lot more expenses for organizers to repair the roads if proper winter conditions would apply so they decided to back off. It snowed a few weeks ago and there's currently a snowstorm outside, but the weather is still around zero and that's bad for early January rallies. If it would get really cold now once the ground is wet it would be perfect, but I don't think that'll happen.

He is from another planet,to be more precise, he is from Mars. Not from Star Trek like N.O.T says.

One year in Mars is 686.98 Earth days.
So, 6 years in Earth is around 2100-2200 days divide it with 686.98 and you get that he is at the beginning of his third year (around 3.1-3.2) :-P

Therefore anybody who is "not Bush" is a filthy leftist...

That said, since my politics is typical European working class, in крепость Америка therefore I am accued of being a filthy, godless Marxist...
People are shocked when I agree. It is like saying you molest baby dolphins.

Mark my words, MikeD!

Are people blind in here??? Hirvonen has been nowhere in the last two years. He has two wins in Sweden due to road position - his other couple of wins were due to teamorders.

I am sticking with my prediction! ;)

Age is irrelevant - speed is relevant and the future will be about JML and Ogier ... not Hirvonen because he's isn't fast enough. The only reason he has been semi-close to the title is due to massive use of teamorders in a combination with consistency.

Hirvonen is not hired by Citroën to take titles ... he's there to secure points for the Manufacturers title.

Anybody know what car Ostberg was testing today? Did he borrow a car?

No, the team has bought his car from last year from M-Sport. He first tested the car in WRC-spec, rebuilt the car during the night and tested in RRC-spec the next day (30 mm restrictor etc.) Mads will contest at least the first two norwegian championship rounds, starting with the Mountain Rally coming saturday. In Norway he will drive the car in RRC-spec. As also Andreas Mikkelsen will drive his Fabia S2000 in the Mountain Rally, the outcome and comparison between the two will be very interesting. As it looks now both Mads and Andreas will contest the Finnskog Rally 4th of february. This is not a championship round, but an excellent testing opportunity before the Swedis Rally. The Finnskog Rally has eight stages totalling 120 kms in the same area where they are running the first day in Swedish Rally. This will be important as the stages in Norway has a different and more technical caracter than the stages in Sweden, and remember the first day of Rally Sweden is something like 110 km stages in Norway! The organisers of the Finnskog Rally are trying to market their rally as an excellent test for all drivers participating in the Swedish Rally, only three days before recce starts in Sweden.

It really impresses me when people are actually interested in the most obscure of journeymen drivers. Joakim Roman finished 26th overall in the 2001 Swedish rally, some 25 minutes behind Gr.N winner Stig Olof Walfridsson. In 2002 he finished the rally in 44th place, 17 minutes behind Daniel Carlsson (and ten minutes behind Tord Linnerud/Yours truly...).

Ogier won MC in 2009, Hirvonen in 2010

Of course I don't want to bring their victories down but it's always good to see circumstances when speaking about pure speed. Ogier won it in 2009 more by luck than speed. Some six drivers in front of him retired or had punctures. He won only one stage where he lives at, where there was plenty of new snow (he was starting quite far in the field) and where Hänninen and Meeke crashed.

In 2010 it was different story, Ogier was fastest but first his off and than classic alternator PSA problem ended his chances.

Mikko in 2010 benefited strongly from special wet tyres made by Pirelli only for Monte Carlo to take a victory from Michelin. He won only few stages but he made enough time on wet stages so his slower times on snow didn't harm him. There is also one more point - the secrecy how Ford passed scrutineering one day later after they were rejected (I believe there were also some protest from Škoda against homologation - maybe also from PSA?).

Both won and that's fact. But we can't say their victories showed they were way faster than those like Hänninen, Meeke or Sarrazin. (Solberg last year for another example). Moreover in Monte where it is often quite a gamble.

more drivers that know tarmac surface better...which potentially will make the competition better.

For example Neuville in sweden will be tourist while in Monte he is a dark horse, same goes for Campana, who in sweden some R2 might be faster but in monte i think he will do better.

It is not always about numbers and names...try and see the big picture...or you are going to end up like those strange poeple who think posting news about Al rajihl and the rest of the tourist squad important.

How did you work that one out? Sweden seems to basically be the same + more.

You are quite right that there is a quantity vs. quality argument, but I think the likes of Ostberg, Ketomaa, Sandell at worst balance out Campana/Neuville and as Mirek said the SWRC entry is bigger (and better).

Well... same could be said of Sweden:

more drivers that know snow/ice surface better...which potentially will make the competition better.

For example Henning in Monte will be tourist while in Sweden he is a dark horse, same goes for Østberg....

And, by the way, I have no problem if Al rajihl gets an post or two here :)

Henning and Wilson have entered, 20 wrc, 15 s2000, I think it's the best start list since 2003 or something

Trying to sound not to pompous: What did I say?
Anyway, this proves that when a german website (or any nationality) "states" anything about different drivers participation in rallies, or for that matter bowel movements or love life, its very seldom based on reliable sources or facts. Rallye-magazin.de is just like the others, a bunch of uninformed clowns qouting rumours or speculation.
@Vargåsen, I think you are correct about 2003, when something like 28 WRC`s competed. Tord Linnerud/Yours Truly finished the rally in 19th place in our Toyota Corolla WRC, in front of Jari Viita/T. Laine Ford Focus WRC, while first Gr. N car on the overall list was Kenneth Bäcklund (Mitsubishi) in 21st place. 2003 Swedish Rally was indeed a great event when it came to entries and competition!

I checked the 2007 Swedish rally entry list now, and it was better than I remembered.

But it is a great entry list for this year anyhow, with many fast "new" guys in wrc-cars (Tänak, Neuville, Sandell, Ketomaa, Prokop) which should keep the tourists out of the top ten at least.

One thing which will be strange this year is standing in the forest friday morning waiting for the first car. This has always been my favourite moment in a rally.

But instead of hearing and seeing Sebastien Loeb flying through the corner (which has been the case in Sweden almost every year lately) it will probably be Pablo Nobre. The question is if he will be as impressive.

snow is not a major factor...the biggest problem is if we do not have ice...

but still long before the rally, 2-3 days of bad weather is enough to have good winter conditions.

Snow is major factor as well, without snowbanks drivers need different lines. With snowbanks you can lean the back of the car against them ...

Last two winters RS did not have any ice on the stages I visited. Very much snow. And hard snow surface which was gone after ten cars. There´s no problems except for lack of cold I´d say. Just different ways to tackle the rally.

Snow is definitely not a "major" factor! A winter rally depends first and foremost of a proper ice surface. Without ice it will be a gravel rally (frozen or muddy), which is a totally diferent matter. But this year I think Rally Sweden will have icecovered roads, anyway the conditions for the friday in Norway looks perfect at the moment. Its not a lot of snow, but proper ice surface on the roads.
