IRL Engine in BMW Hillclimb car

Hi guys !

I want to show you our Hillclimb car which is powered with an IRL engine :)

BMW 320 IRL evo
2814

The basis is a BMW E30 but the technique is modern.

Technical data:

Engine: GM 3.5l V8 from IRL
570HP @ 11300rpm
changed to Gasoline (because of regulations)
Transmission: F1 Prost Gearbox
Weight: 860kg race ready (regulations)

I always tried to visit at least one hillclimb where Georg Plasa competed. I saw his new car at Trier this year and it was absolutely incredible. I still can't believe he's gone ;(

We compete races in Austria at the moment but it is not sure now which races we compete in 2012.
But RECHBERG is fixed , it counts to the European Hillclimb Championship and it i the biggest race in Austria !

On the hill it is not so easy to find the compromise between aerodynamic and ride height because of the road contitions.
So we decided to make a buffer made out of Titan to let the car sit on the ground waves and the distance from the ground to the diffusor is always in a good space ;) And also to save the carbon parts from the ground.
So only these Titan parts spark ;)

How difficult was it to marry the Prost F1 gearbox to the 3.5 IRL engine?

The transmission was optimized in cooperation with KOPPE Automotive for the IRL engine and the requirements of hillclimb races. So the gear ratio and other things like lubrication were optimized. KOPPE is an experts in such things and they build cars for a few other race series.

With this car top speed is around 240 km/h. In this kind of racing you use very low Translation.

After great pre-season testings, the car was prepared for the first year of 2012 for team edlinger. At Rechberg, Erich Edlinger showed about 30000 people watching all of his great driving abilities and after a great day he was the best Austrian driver and best overall touring car, he even left great drivers like Herman Waldy behind him and was ahead of some F3000 and achieved a sensational 8th place in the overall classification!

Always special fun to run in the rain and fog!!

I just can't express how much i respect the performance of our driver, to drive that car with rear wheel drive up the hill under those conditions. And all that without exit zones!
The incredible thing was the he was on the same level as the all wheel drive cars in rain !
I had too much heartattacks from watching him at raceday .. ;)

After our last race last Sunday, we can look back happily once again.
Erich Edlinger in his BMW 320 IRL evo achieved incredible times and was fastest in every race run, as a result of that he took the overall win, the win in the “super race”, a single run with the 10 fastest cars of the race and he also set a new Trackrecord at St Peter / Kammersberg which is part of the Styrian Hill Climb Championship.

I’d like to inform you about our latest racing event:
In St Urban, Austria, Erich Edlinger set an amazing pace once again, and dominated over all touring cars. He was over 8 seconds in front of the second placed touring car, a Porsche 911 GT2 RSR. With this times he was even in the position to fight with the 300kg lighter Formula 3000 cars for the overall victory. At the end an outstanding 3rd place in the overall classification was a great success for the team edlinger.
