The struggle of climbing the career ladder and genuine humility and warmth. Completely forgot he was part of the band of brothers who raced in Japan in the early 90s. Damn, 15 years is a long time.

Epic read but well worth it regardless of whether the name is familiar to you or not.

I remember watching that race and terrible ending. Prayers for him and a corner worker.

That was a very good article. Jeff was a great guy and a true racer. The crash was horrible and haunting to watch, but I think he is now in a better place. Rest in peace Jeff and Gary.

A great tribute to him by Marshal Pruett. I read and remembered that day. I was at corner 3 around the corner watching on the hill (something they have blocked now with ad banners) when the accident occured. The image of Jeff sitting in the car motionless almost turned me off racing for good.....and it wasn't until I got back to the worker's meeting after the race I heard about Gary..and THAT really shook me to the core....

To me, the organizers of the Indy and who okayed that back straight the way they did ought to be ashamed of themselves....they have to live with the knowledge that their being cheap about putting the fence on the main wall would have saved Gary for sure, and possibly Jeff as well. A joke....

A very good read. I didn't know much about Jeff, but I sure remember that day. While there is video of the crash, I've always wished that the camera had picked up more of what was happeneing before the contact. I've always wondered if Johansson didn't see him or if he was moving to block Jeff. I guess only Steffan knows for sure.
