View Full Version : All Time Combined NASCAR Win List

I have been working on this for a while, but have been rather reticent to post it, for a few reasons. One of the largest is because of the lack of cohesive records for the old Sportsman Series-you wont find Ralph Earnhardt on this list, for example-and how many more wins would drivers like Richard and Lee Petty, the elder Allisons, the Pearson's (etc) have? I really have no way of knowing for sure.

Another is the same complaint I get in my "Active" Cup driver list, the whining about how the Cup drivers shouldn't be driving in Nationwide and trucks, about how their wins there are somehow tainted and don't count because the competition isn't as stiff and the races are shorter. I actually view it in the exact opposite manner. I feel like the guys that continuously compete in multiple (and in Shrub and Harv's case, all 3 series) are facing conditions that are more like the way it was pre 1975 when what is now the Sprint Cup series raced 60 plus times a year and not all the top drivers went to every race, so some races would have a lower level of competition than the "big races" at Daytona and Charlotte. And not every race was a 400 or 500 miler (or lapper), either-there were many races in the 100-300 mile (or lap) range-some even on dirt, back then. So when Shrub busts off 20 plus wins over 70 plus races in a year-well that's alot like what Richard Petty was doing when he broke off 20 plus wins in a 70 plus race year back in his day. The best drivers and teams are going to lead the laps and win the races, that hasn't changed. I still maintain that a lap is a lap, a trip down pit road is a trip down pit road and a spin or wreck is a spin or wreck no matter which one of these national series a particular event is held in-the driver and team must still get it done. Kevin Harvick had by far the best car at Daytona in the Nationwide race this weekend but events came together to put him P18 at the checkered flag this weekend. Those things can and do happen, no matter what series it is.

In any event, for those who wish to view each series on it's own, well, those lists already exist, all over the internet (I used the sortable feature at Racing-Reference.info - Race Results and Driver Statistics for NASCAR and more! (http://www.racing-reference.info) to assist me with putting together this list.

Anyway, enough of that. As you can see this list is a little different than the other list-a win in the various iterations of the Sprint Cup Series is not mandatory to make this list. This list covers the Strictly Stock-Grand National-Winston-Nextel-Sprint Cup Series from 1949-2011, The Busch Grand National-Busch-Nationwide Series from 1982-2011, and the Super Truck-Craftsman-Camping World Truck Series from 1995-2011. The list is up to date through this past weekends races at Daytona in Nationwide and Sprint Cup, and through Texas in the trucks.

I have chosen to go with the top 50 drivers (there are actually 51, due to the 3 way tie for p49).

Unlike the other list I wont be re-posting it every week, just every once in a while.

The format is generally the same as the other list-but thanks to Petty and Pearson I have had to add an extra leading zero in the overall and cup column for the rest of the drivers, to wit:

020/005/10/05 means 20 overall wins/5 Cup wins/10 Natwide wins/5 truck wins. The reason for the leading zeros is for column straightening-sorry if it makes it harder to read.

Ties are dealt with by the following order of precedence:
1) Driver with the most Cup wins
2) Driver with the most Nationwide wins
3) Driver with the most Truck wins
4) Driver who had that "tying" win first (if known by me-if not sure then):
5) Alphabetical Order of Last Name

What I am finding interesting about this list is that there are 16 of the 51 drivers listed that are currently competing in the Sprint Cup Series on a regular basis.

What I also find interesting is that even with all the clamoring of how much "easier" it is to win in the lower series only 8 drivers are on the list without a win in the cup series-multi time Nationwide Championship winners such as Jack Ingram, and Sam Ard, as well as Camping World Series Champions Ron Hornaday, Jack Sprague, Todd Bodine and Mike Skinner.

The fact that it took at least 21 wins total to crack the top 50 added to the wow factor (for myself, anyway); that pretty much kicks any "flash in the pan" drivers off the list-but it also kept some really great drivers like Donnie and Davey Allison, as well as Tim Richmond and Alan Kuilwicki off the list-drivers who either never really had that shot in the best equipment, or had their lives cut short due to tragedy or illness off the list as well.

Kyle Busch is only 26 and already tied for 3rd on the all time list, now that's impressive

In my search to find the combined winner from every NASCAR sanctioned series, I found Richie Evans has 478 wins across 3 divisions, but I can't vouch for how many of those wins were sanctioned by NASCAR.

What was the non-cup race that David Pearson won?

What was the non-cup race that David Pearson won?

Busch Series race# 1982-17, the 1982 Coca-Cola 200 at the North Carolina Motor Speedway (Rockingham) June 27, 1982.

I would guess most of them or why else would they be putting him in the Hall of Fame?

However this list was for what Nascar generically calls the 3 National Touring Series, which covers the all the iterations of the Sprint Cup Series, the Nationwide Series and the Camping World Truck Series. I would have had the old Sportsman Series in there too if I could have found some difinitive numbers.

Richie Evans was primarily a modified driver and the very set up of the various divisions of that are more regional in nature and not included in this list, which is the same for the old Winston West, Busch North (etc etc etc) and what ever those regional series are called now.

But yeah, 478 wins in ANY series is mighty impressive!

That's why he's my favorite.

You will have to find and include the NASCAR Grand American Sedan series races too.

The old Late Model, which is now Nationwide, was a hotly contested series by people for whom that was the main thrust.

The H.A.M.B. site has a picture of a seventies Monte Carlo with Talladega Ford type droop snoot. It was banned after one race but showed how serious people took that series.

It is time to welcome Matt Kenseth into the 50 win club, and Brad Keselowski breaks into this list, bumping out Benny Parsons and Jack Smith in the process. Joey Logano (20) and Clint Bowyer (19) are the next 2 active drivers poised to break into the Top 50, needing just 2 or 3 more wins to tie Ard and Ellis.

Just a question. Would you not include the old convertible division races? It was a touring series for a few years (4) and at national level. Other divisions (GN East, GN West, Nascar North, the modifieds, and early sportsman were definitely regional, but I can easily see the convertibles on par with the early Busch Series of the trucks, especially since Richard Petty says they used to run the same car, just bolting or unbolting the top depending on what type of race they were running.

If so, Richard Petty would have 1 more win, Lee Petty 2, Ned Jarrett 1, Tim Flock 1, Rex White 1, Joe Weatherly 12, Fireball Roberts 4, and Curtis Turner and Bob Welborn would join the list of top 50 winners. Curtis Turner had 17 top division wins and 38 wins in convertibles for 55 wins, and Bob Welborn had 9 Grand National wins to go with his 19 convertible wins for 28 total.

But yeah, I can see where the convertibles could be a valid comparison to the current Nationwide Series, and as such I would be more than happy to add the convertible wins to the list. Where can I find a reliable, easy to access source to find those? I would also liked to have been able to use pre 1982 Sportsman series wins as well as part of the the Busch Grand National-Busch-Nationwide Series totals, too.

I will add the numbers you gave me above to the Nationwide column (a lazy way to keep me from having to readjust the entire list to add a new column, lol). ;)

NASCAR Convertible Series Page - Racing-Reference.info (http://www.racing-reference.info/cv.htm)

Here is the convertible division info. It's pretty accurate. (I would however, double check the numbers I gave you,as I just quickly ran #'s.) Greg Fielden wrote one of his books about the series, so it is pretty well researched, and essentially they were GN cars with the top cut off. Richard Petty's actual debut was in a convertible, and as he said, they had a car with a bolt-able top that they would take off or put on depending on what type of race they were running.

And just to really blow you mind, what about this series?

NASCAR Grand National East Series Page - Racing-Reference.info (http://www.racing-reference.info/gne.htm)

Grand National East was originally a short lived series composed of all of the 200 lap GN races on tracks less than a mile that were dropped when Winston came in, and the schedule was cut. (beginning the so-called "modern era".) Drivers on the above list with wins would be David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Bobby Isaac. Buddy Baker and Tiny Lund also won their share, but still don't make the list I believe. It is regional though, so you could draw the line there.

As far as sportsman, It would seem an insurmountable task as there were literally hundreds, if not over 1000 total races in the different regions all over the country. I don't even know how the champion was determined, but it was not a touring schedule. The champions listed were literally running 3-4 nights a week trying to rack up as many points as possible in their different regions. When Tiny Lund was killed at Talladega in 1975, he had not run a Cup race in a couple of years, but he was there to make money in order to plow into his sportsman effort, because he was going for it,and needed money in order to maintain that frantic schedule.

Thanks for the link to the convertible stats. Funny, I'm on racing-reference every day and I never noticed that before. It surely didn't exist when I started this list back in 2009.

As for regional series, I won't say I am not interested, just not for this list.
