I have just caught the end of an advert on TV saying something along the lines of if you own a car, regardless if it is on or off the road, you must still pay insurance and road tax...Has anyone else heard anything of this? Is there any way out of it? It means those of us who have project cars that are in a million bits over a garage floor still have to pay road tax  And the DVLA wonder why theyre so unpopular

Cant you still declare it off the road?

How to make a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) : Directgov - Motoring (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/UntaxedVehicle/DG_4022058)

Just SORN it. It doesn't need to be taxed and insured

Warning over uninsured vehicles - Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/insurance/motorinsurance/8531240/Warning-over-uninsured-vehicles.html)

Tbh I've always been of the opinion that this was the way it was. When my 406 went off the road and we cancelled the insurance, we SORN'ed it. It's not difficult or costly.

Just remember to renew your SORN yearly, conveniently the DVLA won't remind you to, but will then be very happy to send you fines for owning an untaxed vehicle

Are you sure about that? I always get a SORN reminder for a motorcycle I have that the last taxed expired Oct 2000 and has been on a SORN ever since.
