View Full Version : 2011 Team Rankings
So what we've seen so far this is how I'd rank the top 10 teams.
1. Team Penske
2. Chip Ganassi Racing
3. Newman Hass Racing
4. KV-Lotus Racing
5. Andretti Autosport
6. Sam Schmidt Racing
7. HVM Racing
8. Panther Racing
9. A.J. Foyt Enterprises
10. Dryer and Reinbold Racing
There have been a lot of under-performance at the top teams this year. Will Power is the only Penske driver meeting expectations, likewise Dario is the only Ganassi driver whose performed so far. Andretti had one bright moment at Long Beach and failed hard at Indy this year. DR&R has underperformed on the road courses which should be their strength. Conquest has taken a step back. Sebastien Bourdais hasn't lived up to expectations at Coyne. Dragon Racing might not survive the double DNQs at Indy.
On the other hand KV has been remarkable and very very aggressive with their race strategy. Sam Schmidt had a great qualifying for Indy and is dominating Indy Lights. HVM has encountered its share of bad luck but is showing solid results. Newman Haas is the feel good story of the year and should win a race this year.

Well put. I can't dispute any of this. I am scratching my head as to why Andretti is struggling so badly at INDY of all places. I am wondering if the constant firing of technical staff over the last couple of years has really put them up against it this year. As for Penske and Gannassi under-performing so far you have definitely hit that spot on. Yet, isn't it scary that here they are, not on top of their game, and the top 2 drivers in the points standings are one from each and they are decimating the rest of the field. Man if they were hitting on all cylinders it already would have been time to declare the season over. The new chassis/engine packages cant get here fast enough to suit me. Then again, the top two have the largest engineering budget and as such will have a distinct advantage on the rest of the field in development on the new car-so it may be a case of be careful what I wish for.....

It's interesting to see where you have AA and KV, MDS. It seems like half of AA was doing well, while the other half were pretty mediocre. That is until this month... Conway will probably go to something like 15th after the dnq. How did you reach your conclusions about the teams after 7th place?
In considering 2012, does anyone else foresee NH with Lotus as an "anchor team"? Extra test time and knowledge? It would be hard to turn down, even with the risk of an underpowered lump. I'd think that some type of b2b sponsorship comes with that type of arrangement too. Maybe enough to get somebody like Justin Wilson back...

I've been compiling this team standings since the beginning of the season. To equilize between one-car and multi-car teams, only the points of the highest scoring driver on any given weekend is counted for each team. (Not the highest finishing driver, but the highest scoring driver. The two can be different because of extra points and qualifying points.)

Thanks for compiling these standings! There really ought to be an official "Teams' Championship" like this. Or is there?

Good job Doc. Do Ganassi's numbers reflect the second team as well (Rahal)?

Yes. As far as I know, all four cars are officially entered by "Chip Ganassi Racing Teams, Inc."
In fact, Graham was the highest scoring Ganassi driver in Sao Paolo.
Dr K. - I went a different path when ranking the teams. I totaled the average finish of the team's participants in each race and that closed up the rankings considerably. The thought is that when you only consider the best finish you aren't taking into account poor performances by other members of the team.
Using the average the teams finishes totals as follows:
01 Team Penske 131.00
02 Ganassi Inc. 126.25
03 Newman Haas 126.00
04 Sam Schmidt 108.00
05 Panther Racing 101.00
06 KV Racing 99.67
07 AJ Foyt Enterprises 96.00
08 HVM Racing 92.00
09 Andretti Autosport 89.25
10 Dreyer & Reinbold 82.50
I'm sure Michael Andretti wouldn't like my system, but then again, Michael probably isn't liking a lot this year.

Here is my updated team standings after Texas. I only counted the race, won by Franchitti, and not the stupid exhibition afterwards.

Since the driver point standings DO include the second race, don't you think the team standings ought to as well.

I would rate Ganassi high over Penske, because Ganassi is a Team. Penske is a One Man Show. Power is superior to his teammates on every kind of racetrack.
