I spotted a (moderately) famous person in the car next to me the other day on the Motorway, so I thought we might play a little game of guess who.

Seeing as I am shamelessly pilfering the format from The Chris Moyles Show this should be played to the Jeopardy 'thinking music' - just have a look on you tube if you don't know it.

Rules are simple. One question. One yes/no answer.

If you think you know it, have a guess. Simples.

I'll start!

Is this person a man?

YES!

Next guess. :)

ps - I should think only UK residents will know this one.

Mark
4th May 2011, 09:35
Is this man involved in the world of sport?

ps, I've got the Guess Who music stuck in my head now

Sonic
4th May 2011, 09:39
YES! World of sport it is.

I've got it playing on the Ipod :D

Mark
4th May 2011, 09:39
Is this sporting man involved in the world of motorsport?

Sonic
4th May 2011, 09:41
Mark: No. Not motorsport.

Mark
4th May 2011, 09:44
Is this man currently participating in their chosen sport or are they now retired?

Eki
4th May 2011, 09:50
Osama Bin Laden, the world champion of hide and seek?

GridGirl
4th May 2011, 09:52
I met two moderately famous people on Saturday. I'm now feeling rather happy but also quite guilty as the hotel they own/ work at under charged the meal we had by £78. Just because they are on tv doesn't mean that I know them. That's what I keep telling myself anyway.

Does the location where you saw the man have any links with his sporting profession? By this I mean something along the lines of did you see Gazza is Newcastle.

Sonic
4th May 2011, 09:53
Everyone's just leaving you to do all the hard work, then they'll swoop in and guess it at the end :)

Yes retired (although still active, if thats the right way to describe it, within the same sport)

Ps I know that's not a yes no answer, but my game, my rules ;)

Sonic
4th May 2011, 09:54
Osama Bin Laden, the world champion of hide and seek?

No. But LOL

Grid Girl: no

Mark
4th May 2011, 09:59
Is this person now well known for their TV appearances now they have stopped playing their sport?

Sonic
4th May 2011, 10:01
Mark: YES.

Mark
4th May 2011, 10:02
So a TV pundit, presenter type person, not involved in motorsport.

Would this person be mostly associated with football?

Sonic
4th May 2011, 10:04
Mark: yes again

Sonic
4th May 2011, 10:20
Was this guy Jamie Redknapp?

Nope. But moving into the right zone.

Sonic
4th May 2011, 10:23
Think older.

Sonic
4th May 2011, 10:34
Nope. Probably another generation older still.

Mark
4th May 2011, 10:41
I don't know much about football. So my guess is Gary Lineker, if no then I'm out :p

GridGirl
4th May 2011, 10:46
Is this man famous for wearing a sheepskin coat?

My guess: John Motson

MrJan
4th May 2011, 10:55
Hansen?

Sonic
4th May 2011, 12:07
Mark has it! Gary was stuck in traffic next to me on the M1.

Good game peeps. :)

If anyone else has one (recent or historic) then go right ahead.

Mark
4th May 2011, 12:29
Yay! Was he eating a bag of crisps?!

I guess GridGirl has started a Guess Who already...

So I'll start..

Was this hotel in the Lake District?

GridGirl
4th May 2011, 13:03
Mark, yes it was. If you've looked at Flickr though your a cheater! :p

Sonic
4th May 2011, 13:28
Ok, well I haven't looked at any photos so....

Are they both male?

GridGirl
4th May 2011, 13:56
Yes they are both male.

Mark
4th May 2011, 13:57
I didn't look at flickr - I just know you were in the Lakes!

Is it the Hairy Bikers?

GridGirl
4th May 2011, 14:08
No, we're not talking that famous.

Sonic
4th May 2011, 14:12
Hmmmmm. Over 40?

GridGirl
4th May 2011, 14:44
Sonic - Yes

Sonic
4th May 2011, 15:06
Dunno why I asked that. Doesn't much narrow things down. Ermm, bald?

Mark
4th May 2011, 15:08
Since we are looking for two people. Would this pair normally known as a double act, where one doesn't usually appear without the other?

GridGirl
4th May 2011, 15:21
They are not bald. They are a double act together I suppose but only through how they got famous.

As they are not really that famous and only UK people would be able to guess it I will give you a clue. They featured in a tv show of which the second series in which they were featured recently finished and was replaced by a show of the same nature but different location.

Sonic
4th May 2011, 19:16
Was this on C4?

Rollo
5th May 2011, 01:12
Ruddy Hell! It's not them is it?

You said Famous and associated with Football!

Who the hell is Gary Lineker? He ain't famous and is nowhere to be found in the NFL database.

Gary Lineker isn't famous? He scored against Argentina in possibly one of the most remembered football matches ever.

Then again, it appears you are talking about handegg.

MrJan
5th May 2011, 06:59
And that's David Beckham's ankle rather than his foot.

GridGirl
5th May 2011, 07:51
Sonic - no C4

No one should tell Vop that Gary Linkeker advertises crisps. Obviously to Vop it's not a crisp because it's a chip and that would start an altogether different argument. :p

Brown, Jon Brow
5th May 2011, 11:04
@GridGirl

Are these two men in a relationship together?

GridGirl
5th May 2011, 11:29
Jon, no they are not in a relationship. However when I first saw them last Saturday they were both in swimwear and were jumping in Lake Windermere and were having a swim. Not the best site I've ever seen. These two really aren't famous enough for this thread Mark. The next guess who should be made more internationally known.

Mark
5th May 2011, 11:32
I guess you need to give us a clue to narrow it down!

GridGirl
5th May 2011, 11:38
They were featured in both series of 'The Lakes' tv show which has sinse been replaced in the same time slot by 'The Dales' on ITV. I wouldn't really class them as famous but if you watched the show you would have seen them on tv for 12 weeks this year which is probably more air time than you'd see the average X Factor star.

Mark
5th May 2011, 12:00
Ah The Lakes. Another example of a programme that would be good on the BBC, but on ITV ends up being a pile of steaming poo!

Is it the annoying man with the annoying pigs or the annoying man who does lots of swimming or the annoying couple who sail a lot and got married or the annoying coffee shop owners? :p

MrJan
5th May 2011, 12:00
Even with Google and the clues given I struggled to find an answer, and even when I did I thought WHOOOOO???!!! :p :

I feel like I've cheated using google though so I'm not going to guess the name, but did one of them try to swim the Channel?

GridGirl
5th May 2011, 14:44
I saw Thomas 'The Gladiator' Noblett who indeed has done many charity events including running the 2011 London marathon and attempting to swim the English Channel as well as his right hand man Andrew 'The Admiral' Tighe. Like I said, they are only famous if you have seen the tv show and then you would only class them as Z listers at best. I was however happy that the hotel they run under charged me to the value of 2 three course meals that were very nice indeed. I like it when you get real food for less than the price of frozen and oven cooked Brewsters etc. :D

Now some one else pick someone that everyone can have a go at guessing. This will probably mean that you haven't met the person in the last week. :p

We can argue the difference between European Kick ball and real football all day.

Doesn't change the fact that Gary Lineker ain't even close to being famous.

MrJan
5th May 2011, 21:46
He's far more famous than someone like Derek Jeter or Matt Rothilsberger, just you haven't heard of him.

To be fair Vop, I did say only UK peeps would know him. He's a household name over here. On Tv weekly, plus a long term advertising campaign for snacks.

Maybe you might like to name a football player you consider to be famous. Oh, sorry, I mis-wrote that — who definitely is famous on the grounds that you say so.

To be fair only a billion people saw the 1986 World Cup, and the USA didn't even qualify. There is the annoying little problem that he won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the Copa del Rey with Barcelona, so he probably would only be known by most of Europe, Africa, Asia (because of his time at Nagoya Grampus Eight), the Spanish speaking world including most of South America and Mexico and anywhere that got the English feed of the FA Cup...
... basically Gary Lineker would only be famous to people of a nebulous place called "most of the world", a place with Mr Vop has apparently visited but has previously refused to follow the statute law of.

Well, it obviously can't have been a football/soccer player, because, as we now know, no-one who plays that sport can be classed as famous. So that narrows it down.

JK Rowling went to Exeter Uni....as, I think, did Thom Yorke...ooh and Chris Martin is from Exeter. Oh and Francis Drake used to binge in one of the pubs (he's not around that much these days though), and Dawn Franch apparently lives out Chagford way, as does David James. Liam Tancock (think he's still the WR holder for 50m backstroke) is a local boy, Cliff Bastin ran a pub in Heavitree following his retirement and famous bloke Michael Caines (from Get Carters and The Italian Jobs) is an Exeterite too. So mnahhhhhhhh :p : :D

So , that "infamous" guy you were talking about must have been a bad actor ?

Actually , yes , in a way .
I think he'd be better classified as a "director" .

He did more fancy himself a musician .

And , why the quotes around "director" ?

Bagwan

I wondered if you'd ask , being it that she was an actress , if he was a film director .
There is a film director involved here , but it wasn't him .

He is , or was , rather , more the director of a group .

And , no , he wasn't much of a musician .

Oh , man , this is getting pretty complicated , but I'm still keen to figure it out , bagwan .

So , I guess we have to figure out what this "trouble" was , that the guy in jail did to his wife , to get at the answer .
It must have been pretty serious if he's in jail for the rest of his life .

And , I'm still puzzled by your changing "for" to "from" in your "squeeky toy" post earlier .

It took me about a minute to crack it even though I didn't bother to read the original post. There's so much useless info in my head, I wish I was less knowledgeable about pop culture.

And here's the one from me. Once I was enjoying myself in the downtown of a big Central European city when I heard somebody speaking English with a specific British accent. I turned my head and saw him. He was there, with a young lady, some five inches taller than him. I thought she was from an escort agency or something. He had a hat and sunglasses on and nobody recognized him. I immediately took out my pen and moved closer to him to get a autograph, but his guard gave me a negative sign. I respected the privacy of the guy and left.

He's a household name. He's a musician, or rather a singer, although I think he knows some chords on guitar. He's famous for womanizing and other love affairs. He's a fan of jogging. Who's he?

Charlie directed the girls , including Lynette "Sqeeky" Fromm , in the evil deeds .
Sharon Tate , the girl waving from the water tower in TV's "Pettycoat Junction" , was killed when over nine months pregnant
It was Roman who spent a lot of his time exiled in Gstaad when he was fighting incarceration for statutory rape . Ironic , to say the least , that he had a young girl on each arm .

It's Rudy's turn , if he wants to give it a go , I guess .

Sorry if you found it tedious .

Too bad bagwan didn't get it , because I know he's met a few pretty famous people .

I got the bad guy first. He's in jail for life for being mean to your vis-a-vis' wife and it clicked with me immediately. I didn't have to guess, I just knew it. In fact I've read Manson's story somewhere and I probably know more about him than about Polanski. I only saw a couple of Polanski's movies and then his arrest made the news.

Your clues (British accent, singer, ageless, maybe guitar, household name) along with my limited knowledge, I came up with only two names: Jagger & Bowie. I didn't think Bowie had been around quite as long, so I went with Jagger.

Would Humperdink fit with the clue womanizer?

I live in a smaller city (Winnipeg), in the middle of nowhere, where few celebrities dare to venture, and I guess I don't get out much so I'll have to go back a number of years.

In the late 90's I was working in an office building right next to our Legislative building. There was a movie being shot there, so I decided to try and take a peak during my lunch hour. I got inside and was able to watch part of a shoot from the bottom of a staircase that wraps back and forth up a couple of floors. I spotted someone I'd seen on TV before (although I never really watched the show) on the landing half a floor up. She was the star of a show that ran through most of the 90's. I watched for about 10 minutes, and thought she's prettier in person than on TV.
Then last winter, I was watching a James Bond flick (from the 70's) that I hadn't seen in years and saw her again. No wonder she's still looking good - she was a Bond girl.
Guess who?

She also appears on many albums singing back-up for all her friends out there .

If I wasn't such a Luddite , I would be able to post links to her vids .

Alright then , you cats asked for it , or , at least , haven't stepped up to denounce the idea , so , here's another one :
I was walking across a big area of new cement , in a huge crowd , in 1976 , when I saw someone I recognized , about 100 yards away .
Guess who .

Burton Cummings

Burton Cummings

Nope , but great guess !
That part was not a clue , just the name of the game .
And , that wasn't a clue either .

He was French , and a big star in a couple of areas of entertainment .
That was a clue , or maybe , a few .

Dude , that's the man !

It was crazy , walking across a huge crowd near the velodrome , at 6ft 3 , I was able to largely see over the crowd , and there he was , way over there , with the people around him looking like munchkins .

Your turn , Firstgear .

I was going to guess Kareem Abdul Jabar until you gave the 'French' clue. Andre was great in The Princess Bride. Here's mine - Late 90's at Whistler /Blackcomb. I saw her at the end of the day, in one of the shops, looking very much out of place in a fur coat going down to her ankles. Guess who?

Nope and nope. She's probably best known for a 90's TV series in a setting way down the coast from where I spotted her.

How about Tori Spelling ?

You're getting kind of close. Approximately the right setting, but wrong TV show and wrong color hair.

Heather Locklear?

...Oops, she's a blonde too isn't she?

Firstgear

Heather definitely had the right assets, umm I mean qualifications, to fit the cast of the show that the girl I spotted is famous for. But by the time this show aired, Heather may have been just a bit long in the tooth, and yeah - the girl I spotted is a brunette.

Bagwan

If Heather is described as "long in the tooth" , then Valerie Bertinelli wouldn't fit the bill either then , would she ?

Firstgear
15th May 2013, 18:39
Well, long in the tooth in a Hollywood sense, and not Valerie. I don't think I ever watched an entire episode of the show she was in, but I can still remember what she would wear.....a red one-piece.....

Carmen Electra

I had to wiki Carmen to see what she had done (heard the name - no idea what she's famous for) and it turns out she's been on Baywatch, amongst other things. So, right TV show - but wrong brunette.

Erika Eleniac ? Is that you spell her name ?
