Hello,

is there any info if the Catalunya will be tarmac only again?
Last year they said it will be 50/50, but then I read they want to go back to 100% tarmac.
Does someone know why?

Regards,

It will be like last year, just a few changes: first leg mixed gravel/tarmac then only asphalt

Do people recommend doing this? I've heard it's quite relaxed and first day on gravel and half of shakedown makes it interesting for me.
What can you compare the gravel sections to? Any jumps/watersplashes?

I liked the Catalunya 2010 very much.
It's quite cheap to visit and the Spanish are very friendly and relaxed.

I think the landscape is much more different and more interesting than in France.
France 2010 was like forest, forest, oh a forest! and forest again ;)

I'd really love to go there again this year...

I don't get it either, why can't he be motivated for ANYTHING! He is letting down his fans hard. I had hopes when he started in the WRC he would actually make a go of it. I thought that his failure to attend Rally NZ 2010 or Australia this year was indicative on his lack of commitment.

It could be a very interesting rally in Spain.

Sordo and Petter Solberg will have a good road position advantage on day 1s gravel stages, and Ogier and Loeb will fall behind but will probably struggle to catch up with the Minis of Sordo and Meek because of the're day 1 road position.

The Fords of JML and Mikko Slowvonen will probably be off the pace compared to the Citroens.

I think manufacturers are limited to testing days? Someone might know that, 16 o so isn't it? So could be that they haven't nominated this test slot, you'd hope that they didn't decide to just not test. Hope they're competitive

To bring everybody back to the mood I did some calculations.
Current points
Loeb 196
Hirvonen 196
Ogier 193

Points without powerstages:
Hirvonen 182
Ogier 179
Loeb 178

Powerstage points:
Loeb 18
Hirvonen 14
Ogier 14
Latvala 12
Solberg 6
Sordo 2

And just for comparision I calculated the points with 2009 system
Hirvonen 76
Loeb 73
Ogier 72

So, at the end of day we have huge numbers but the difference is nearly the same (without powerstages):-)

Could anyone recommend some good spectator points?

From the spectator guide RallyRACC (http://www.rallyracc.com/2011/ingles/guia_tramos.html)
I would recommend ZP4 in SS1 and ZP5 in SS2. In ZP5 there is a bit of everything: change tarmac-gravel, twisty section on gravel, little jumps 600 metres to the right, scenic view under an ermitage on dirty old tarmac 500 metres to the left, and a water splash 1,5 km to the left. The place will be quite popular and short of parking, what means a bit of walking, so be early.

Harry Hunt:
So...this probably wasn't the best way to start the Catalunya Rally! But it will all polish out. Bit of a roll during the shakedown: we were only going to do one run! Everything's going to be fine for the rally but the guys have got a bit of work to do now. Still, they didn't really want to spend the afternoon sitting by the pool really.

As usual , Mr Action himself.

Craig Breen 2nd in SWRC cars, faster than both VW drivers. I'm betting he'll be quicker in the rally too, but remember he's just a good national driver according to NOT. I really hope he kicks Tanak, Hanninen, and the VW's arses.

Lambros tell us some about Catalunya roads, what was difficult, some points etc.

If the tarmac sections are the same as 2009, it is generaly wide and with good grip in most of the stages. you need a clean smooth driving. There are some point where you could cut, but the stop it with concrete blocks, so it is a proper tarmac rally with the minimum dirt and gravel on the road. I think that the car plays an important roll to this rally. Meaning that the right setup and the higher engine power will help you more than in dirty sliperry tarmac roads of other wrc rounds

The latest issue of Vauhdin Maailma magazine rumoured how Ogier's manager Kim Vatanen is currently banned from accessing the Citroen Sport's area at the service park - which for the record is the first Finnish press origin rumour on this Ogier-Loeb war. If anyone present at the rally and SP, if you see Kim Vatanen, take notice on this and report :-)

Wilson added: "The one thing we absolutely have to do is stop Loeb from winning the rally and winning the power stage, that can't happen - if it does, it's over for us. This is Mikko's chance, it's another chance of a lifetime. He's come a long way as a driver since he was in a similar position in 2009, but he's got to make the next two rallies count."

Wilson not so pleased.Maybe rumors for Mikkos exit from Ford have sense?

We had a good battle until he had a problem. He is very fast and young driver. if he can stay in the wrc rallies, he can become a very good driver. Lets see his speed with the s2000 car. I am expecting top three times from him in spain.

Top three is very difficult.... I will go for risky choise: Latvala, Sordo, Loeb
S2000:Tanak, Hanninen, Breen,

Dust issues from everyone running behind despite 3 minute gaps.

wwbroe
21st October 2011, 08:07
So, opening the stage may not be such a disadvantage on today's stages. If the dust keeps on hanging, looks like the rest is running in difficult conditions. If those conditions stay on this night, Loeb could easily take a lot of time from the rest.

Brother John
21st October 2011, 08:08
Loeb is not cleaning, he make the dust for all the other drivers!

Mikko is loosing too much time, nearly twenty seconds again lost compared to Seb.

Ogier fastest trough, 21.1 faster then Hirvonen.

What authorisation?! It's Hirvonen who can not do anything by himself.

Except we've seen this year that Super Rally can still get a top 4 place and that unpressured mistakes can happen. However, I agree Juho should now walk it.

That is exactly what JML is been doing for most of the season, helping poor Mikko

Seems like JML hit something on this stage, no more rear bumper but apparently not too much damage.

Yes, I know but now all trumps are in Juho's hands (but before Germany it looked like that also).

Hirvonen giving lots of fight-talking before the rally but now after two stages +35,3. May I ask - what the hell?

Dust not a problem for JML or Ogier...

In WRR they now are aware that Tanak stopped in first stage, what a "massive" news for them. :D

Tänak stopped in the stage. Wheel off.

Shame that it ended before it started.

Any Autosport (print) readers here? I think it has something on Tänak driving in Wales with Fiesta WRC + Fiesta WRC for whole season 2012.

Looks like Petter and Tänak took the wheel off on the same rock.

Good to see rally radio keeping up with the fight between Hanninen and Tanak...just realized Tanak stopped in stage 1...

Raikonen is really a disgrace for the sport, it's much better he goes back to "pussy" racing.

Sordo seems to be trying hard on this one

Matthew broke the rear gear, it is difficult to understand that you can brake something running at that pace.

Loeb is really pushing...cleaning the road as well....but it seems the handicap from the dust is bigger for the guys running behind.

Very nice times by meeke as well....

Meeke not doing as great on this one, looking at the splits.

Yes for GB, only hints of one of Malcolm's long term deals in teh future, but I dont think its a full WRC car next year from Ford, more likely a S2000 or RRC version.

After two stages "Icecube" is only 2,5 minutes off the pace, even Matthew is faster with only 2min13 back. :D

Wonder if he's being held up by Icecube?

I really hope they do not slow Latvala down once more at this rally as well....

to do it 1-2 times its ok (not right but i guess acceptable) especially if your No1 driver hits trouble, but to slow him down because he is faster reminds me of that joke Biasion.

Could be a reasonable explanation, tough he is still running on a four minute interval i suppose?
