If they make already a thread about the Barum Rally it would be also good then that we would also make on of the Geko Ypres Rally. Stijn Ducastel made a nice list of possible S2000 entries for this nice rally end of June. And maybe we could even talk about the Historic Event that has also every year a great entry list!
The list:
Skoda Fabia S2000 ( 11 )
Kopecky
Loix
Mikkelsen
Gardemeister
Thlustak
Van Loon
Ten Brinke
Travaglia
Rzeźnik
Barrable
Sandell
Hanninen ??
Wallenwein ??
Peugeot 207 S2000 ( 9 )
Wilks
Neuville
Magelhaes
Bouffier
Betti
Gyoshev
Bruyneel
Debackere
Cracco
Settembrini ??
Ford Fiesta S2000( 4 )
Herbold

If they make already a thread about the Barum Rally ...
That was me. 100% unofficial, 100% enthusiasm. I'd love to visit Ypres one day too, but for a Finn the date is bad if it always clashes with our midsummer party which is a holiday most Finns love to spend by a lakeside (maybe that's why Juho doesn't like Ypres... perhaps?). But Ypres' stages look demanding, scenery is beautiful and the entry is always very strong.

I had no criticism because u opened that topic, those rallies are one the most popular events of the IRC season that everyone want to plan very early and very good that they can enjoy the full action ! :D Myeah maybe but if he comes early enough he can enjoy at the beach :D . We'll see if he comes it would be great to show his great pace on asphalt against Loix on Belgian soil. Also a great warming up for the ADAC Rally Deutschland in my oppinion :)
Would be nice if Duval could get his arse into gear and agree some deal with M-Sport for Fiesta S2000 for Corsica and Ypres and Fiesta WRC for WRC Germany!

Yes, there is one of Petr Zedník. It's good one, he made a lot of development on it and made it relatively fast and reliable car, still not top though, especially the torque in lower rpm is still very bad.

This is nothing to do with ypres, but the fiesta had one big problem and that was grip.We tried so many things to improve traction with the car.One big gain was changing the fireing order. That gave us so much more driveability and reliability.

Does the Puma S1600 have the same challenge with traction, and is it the same engine ?
What did you change the fireingorder from and to ?

Could be but I don't think so, Duval did some nice things in JWRC with it, that's what never happened with the Fiesta it never got good results anywhere :-/
popie13
27th April 2011, 21:49
The puma got some results, but Super 1600 was at a early stage. The Fiesta should have been a big improvement, but it was not.
The fireing order we think was an issue so that was changed, from a 1234 to a 1342.After remapping the engine was so more drivable, no more alt problems, radiators splits, the list went on.The down side in changing the order was the exhaust note, before on full chat the car sounded great,a bit like a rotary engine, but after it just sounded like a normal S1600.
I could go on about them for hours, but the thread is about Ypres rally.
I have competed in rallys since 1978 from small single venues to World rally, and i think you will be pushed to find a better ALL ROUND rally than Ypres in the World.
If someone comes up to me and says they are thinking of either watching or going to compete there, i says just do it, you will never be disappointed.

Martin Knudsen maybe on Ypres with Proton - http://www.autosport.cz/clanek.php?cl=12133
Steve Boyd
28th April 2011, 20:27
The fireing order we think was an issue so that was changed, from a 1234 to a 1342.
I can't believe that anyone would build a 4 cylinder engine with a 1234 firing order. The shape of crankshaft needed would result in an inherantly unbalanced design that would simply shake itself to bits as pistons 1&2 would both have to be at TDC while 3&4 were at BDC. The conventional crank design has 2&3 at TDC while 1&4 are at BDC. With this design the firing order can be either 1243 or 1342 and it makes no difference whatsoever to the way the engine performs which of these you choose, although it does affect the way the lobes on the crankshaft are arranged. If the engine was actually 1243 (not 1234 as you have said) and it was better after you made the changes then I suspect it was the remapping that improved it not any change in firing order.
popie13
28th April 2011, 22:20
With the fireing order 1234, yes the car did shake to bits, thats where the unreliably came in, Alternators would fall to bits, Radiators would crack and nuts and bolts would loose their correct torque.
The Fiesta could just about complete a ERC/IRC round, driven at 7/10, but on a Wrc event the amount of work needed at service on the second evening was too much to finish the third day.
Dont worry we tried everything before we changed the order, because the Fiesta was homologated with a 1234 crank.
Steve Boyd
28th April 2011, 23:47
I'm amazed - sounds like the guy in charge of the engine homologation was also a crank!
(PS Should have typed 1&3 at TDC with 2&4 at BDC in my post above)

Well, that's generally a problem with monthly printed media. But then again, 98 out of 100 of their readers haven't heard of the news before, so it justifies its place. If you don't drop in to this forum once or twenty times a day, have at least three Czech rally news sites on your bookmarks or read GPweek word by word, those little news in Vauhdin Maailma are valid :-)

For him it's the perfect car though it's a car where u need to work with and not like the Focus who sticks to the ground like a train on rails. Logical most tests went to gravel, in summer that'll improve for sure when they need some testing on tarmac. Snijers need only to look to Tsjoen, Romain and Debackere in classification. And he's also more and more driving for fun what he did also today in the Sezoens. Everyone complained about him that he was done after the split with Geko. But I knew he would drive minimal one rally! He's finding more then 10 years now new sponsors to fund him and get him some nice cars to drive in rally each year!

Ypres will be most likely just a question of Neuville/Loix. Neither Sarrazin, nor Delecour can win there unless in some special circumstances.

This is kind of what I meant, although if they want another performance driver for backup and he has to be French then I guess Sarrazin is the best choice. Unless Quesnel wants to lend out a Sebastien for the weekend.

The space is not really the problem is more the timing that'll be the problem ;) . Not the first time they had more than 100 entries :D . Last year everyone was allowed I think this year will be maybe different although what I heard is no 2 minute between Prior drivers. 110 Historics entered and probably something like 115 modern cars so don't think it'll fit in the timing.

The Punto isn't so good for Ypres mainly because the suspension isn't as good as the top cars I think (ditch hooking) The Punto was really built for twisty tarmac like Maderia, so I hope Luca will do Madeira too but top 10 should be possible in Ypres.

Don't see Rossetti making the top 10 under any circumstances. Too many Fabs and 207s in capable hands. The Protons are more likely to come good (i.e. finish in the top 10) imvho. I expect the Punto to be uncompetitive or have an accident through overdriving. As there's no Pickem this year let's start a prediction list in this thread . My top 10 as follows
1. Loix, 2. Mikkelsen, 3. Neuville, 4. Kopecky, 5. Bouffier, 6. Wilks, 7. PG, 8. Sandell, 9. Basso, 10. Weijs (if starting, Snijers if not)
Though like last year, attrition could see careful locals get into the top 10. So glad I'm going again this year - let it be dry.

I'm afraid if it's so hot like last year the Proton maybe will have technical problems because of something because of that. The Fabia and 207 are indeed better but not all top drivers are faster than Luca and for sure not in Ypres. Luca is in my oppinion faster than Wilks in Ypres, Wilks only drove 4 stages here last time. Sandell top 10, no way replace him with Tsjoen. Basso was around top 5 in 2009 till he got puncture at Heuvelland final stage. Luca will drive as fast as Basso, on the limit, he'll be very motivated against the IRC competition and the roads fit him. 1st place and 3rd place. Vd Heuvel will be very close to top 10 or maybe in it.

7. PG, 8. Sandell, 9. Basso, 10. Weijs (if starting, Snijers if not)
PG hasn't beaten Basso on a single clear stage yet so I guess that won't happen on pure speed.

I'm not sure Wilks is as fast as Rossetti anywhere, if in the same car. Wilks is a solid driver, but it says everything about IRC that he (and Mikkelsen too) have not yet taken an IRC win.

It's a shame he can't find a little more budget so he could do IRC instead. He could win ERC this year with one hand tied behind his back, even in the "pretty old now" Punto.

He'll have no problems with all of them even Basso's pace will be too slow with that proton I think. Luca is a competitive guy he probably wants to proof himself against a guy like Wilks he feels himself a little bit home in Ypres, probably one of his favorite rally's to start.

I meant winning a JWRC or SWRC rally like Sandell and Ketomaa have Fia B too. Bouffier yeah that's a mystery for me too and Freddy same thing (maybe request like Solowow).

Yes, they are giving FIA B priority for winning category on WRC event. But I think that Sandell has it as ex-FIA A driver (like this year for Basso for example). Bouffier and Neuville has it after big pushing from Peugeot or federation after winning Monte and Corse, but Freddy, who doesnt won anything this year, I dont know... And not talk about Solowow, he has FIA B priority regurarly as third in ERC last year.

Ah podium places on ERC classement gets also Fia Prior then :) . Neuville won Bulgaria JWRC maybe it's because of that but pushing of Peugeot makes sense also. It's ridiculous that Bouffier has FIA A without doing nothing for it.. and about Loix money, money..

I'm talking about FIA championships and earning that Fia A.
Monte Carlo and national championships doesn't decide u get it or not. Tsjoen is a 6 time Belgian Champion. Snijers won also so much doesn't make him a Fia A. That's what I meant..

For some people one win in jwrc/pwrc is more than Bouffier achievements. Of course FIA regualtions are the most important here... but as Loix showed, money or connections have more power :)
It looks like once again Ypres will have one of the most interesting entry lists in ERC/IRC. Unfortunately I can't say the same about special stages.

Monte was for IRC not ERC I think Pluto will second that and it probably is because his boss is named Quesnel the guy who cried last sunday :D . Don't know about Pech he could won an ERC 5 region championship, Mirek or Pluto will know that.
If national championships give u Fia A then Tsjoen needs to get it too.. But I don't think u get that anyways for that too many pilots would get Fia Priority then.

I was very happy with the stages from spectator's point of view when I was there. Tons of great places with deep cuts on 5-6th gear etc. very easily accessible. I can't wish much more. I really don't know why all the people go to those stupid slow junctions.
Also when I drove through several stages I found them much better and way more difficult than I expected before. It's something special but I can't say it is bad at all.

Winning national championship does not have sense for FIA priority (it was working few years ago). Vaclav Pech has FIA B priority for winning in European Cup - Central last year (same as Meeke last year, who hasnt FIA B for winning IRC, but for winning in European Cup - West (or something like that)). IRC wasnt important for FIA, they never gave FIA priority for this championship. Thats why I was surprised, that Peugeot was able to push Bouffier's priority through FIA after winning on Monte. So it looks that there are some changes at FIA and they are starting to respect IRC and pushing from teams and national authorities. Is it signal for future? Bad or good? ...

As far as I know, IRC has almost nothing common with FIA, it "only" uses FIA rallies, but it's an independent series.

That's what I thought that he won such cup, Pech. We know that PSA can push some things that we can't see in the rules.. Seems BFO did that too now with Loix (Almost sure Skoda didn't get involved in this).
And about the stages, Mirek is right and those places that he calls we call that "Waaiers" in our language not really junctions but also not straight (and indeed some with cutting). And there u can see who has balls and not, expect some nice driving of Rossetti, Neuville, Loix, Kopecky etc.
It's a pity some foreign drivers don't want to try Ypres because of the ditches, lately that's not so much the case anymore luckily.

Each national federation has possibility to send propose to FIA during the year and ask for FIA B priority for driver with extraordinary results. Anyway till yesterday I didn´know anybody except "Asi" from Hungary (and I am not sure of him) to have FIA B thanks to that.
