Somebody once told me you can find the perfect relationship, but never the perfect jeans
Lots of other people have told me that you only get what you pay for.
In the past I've only really bought semi-expensive jeans from known brands, usually things like £60 to £150 River Island, Replay, etc. However, a friend who works long hours asked me to get her some specific jeans from a Primark store I pass on my way to the wholesaler, so off I went in some new £140 quid jeans to buy them for her.
They were so nice, I got some for myself. On the way home I noticed a seam in my new £140 quid ones had started to open up and unravel. The Primark ones have turned out to be a better fit, really comfortable, stronger and only cost £8!
I bought some more and pretty much live in those two pairs now :p : The costly collection are all collecting dust :mark:
The moral? Names mean nothing these days, and you don't get what you pay for at all! :(

I dont shop at Primark because it looks like an explosion in a clothes factory. I refuse to shop in stores that are so messy. :s
I've never paid more than around £40 for a pair of jeans. Hazel, I'm surprised you'd spend so much of a pair of jeans when you do so much ordoorsy stuff. I would have always assumed that you'd go for cheap and cheerful as you wouldn't then be bothered if you ruined them. :)

I guess it depends what you're looking for, I can get a tonne of stuff from there in one go, but then I try to keep my clothes shopping to a minimum, either order online or get my better half to do it for me :p

I just really hate messy shops. How do you know you want something if you cant find it for all the rubbish? This is why I also completely avoid Next when they have a sale on. Why get up at stupid O'clock trying to find a bargain in all that mess when you can do it in the comfort of your own home online. Its so much easier. :D
Ibby doesn't buy clothes either unless they are for hiking or cycling. If I could throw away all his old and tatty clothes he would be walking round naked most of the time. Men! :p

I'm the same - can't stand Primark or messy stores or the Next sale. I like things set out properly although even then I struggle to find things I like I'm useless at clothes shopping.
I haven't worn jeans for years and I used to live in them outside work. I wish I'd never worn them as I don't think they suited me anyway. I nearly always wear skirts now.

My main issue shopping for clothes is that you buy a load of whatever - trousers, t-shirts etc, then you go back a little later after only, say, 2 years, and they don't sell them any more. So you have to faff about trying on new styles

Those £8 jeans are made by some sweat shop using child labor. But if it makes you feel better, so are probably the £140 ones too.

For the same reason why in Finnish you have "housut" (trousers/pants) instead of "housu" (trouser/pant) or "farmarit" (jeans) instead of "farmari" (jean) or "sakset" (scissors) instead of "saksi" (scissor).

I wear Jeans quite a lot, obviously not for work. But I would never spend a lot of money on named Jeans,as I feel it's how the jeans fit,and how comfortable they feel.I can pick up Jeans here in Spain in Carrefour for 6 Euros that fit me well ,feel very comfortable, even after driving 800 miles in a day too. When I was last in Canada I bought some black stretch jeans for about 12 dollars, really comfortable, and they told me sold lots of them to the truckers that ran down to Mexico and Florida,

You are possibly one of the most snide people I've 'met' on here - the regular comments on my life, area I live in and so on are wearing thin. I buy what I like and pay cash. I know. With just about everything except clothes I try my best to buy British, but you just cannot get jeans made here. Most clothes made here are either really shoddy or thousands of pounds (or both). Bought some really nice Joules tweed the other day (all their stuff is made in China) because the Brit alternative was frankly ten times the price, a worse fit and no better quality.
Having said I buy British when possible, I recently gave in buying our pork and bacon for lent. The bloody farmers were screaming 'Buy British!' in the pig market car park, with nothing but their foreign built cars and lorries parked behind them. They aren't bothered where their cars, dog food and all the rest come from, so I refuse to fund them until summer now. :p :
Anyhow, I digress. Sorry.

My biggest problem with jeans is that they're made for skinny white dudes. My waist is a size 30 (inches), but anytime I try a pair of those jeans they are too tight on my bum and thighs. I have to get a bigger pair of jeans, like a size 31 or 32, so they can fit comfortably. I usually don't wear any underwear and that makes things a lot more comfortable when wearing smaller sized jeans.

For me to buy a pair of Levi's 501s in Sydney would cost me $119.95. The 517s which I did buy, which I think look nicer anyway, cost $129.95. That works out to be £82.41 as at today's exchange rates.
At £40 or A$63.06, it would probably work out cheaper for me to buy jeans online from the UK; have them shipped half way around the world.
Besides which, if you're paying 40 squid for a pair of jeans, then you're probably paying for something of better quality anyway. The rest of the jeans in your wardrobe then take one step down in terms of goodness and thus the circle of life continues.
A £40 pair of jeans probably won't tear on things like fences, barbed wire or even wear from riding on horses as much. I would expect that a £40 pair of jeans would more than likely earn its keep than an £8 pair of Tesco Value Jeans which would freak out at the first sign of dirt.
Heck, I still think I have the odd pair of jeans which I'd wear whilst working under cars or out in the garden, which date from the late 90's.

Trousers, jeans, faeces, scissors, clothes, cash... these are known as Plurale Tantum from the Latin for "plural only". Even the word Million was always a plural right up until the mid 1970s. Ms Thatcher talked about amounts of Five Millions Sterling etc.
It's a result of the fact that English is a vulture of a language which steals from everywhere. Words like sushi, samurai, deer and sheep are Singularia Tantum or "uncountable". English over time knocks these words into shape as well - you can have 50 ninjas but not 50 samurais, they're always 50 samurai.

how much??????
I was shocked at these outrageous prices for levi stuff, so I did some checking....sure nuff!!!!
Lucky me (i guess) is many of my jeans are dated around 1960 or so. Back when they were made in the USA. All of them are in better condition and seem to be higher quality then what I have seen at the store or purhased the last few years, despite constant use and washing of the older jeans
One of those is a Levi jeans jackets that I have been wearing for about 50 years, and it is still in great shape.
About 4 years ago, for Christmas, I got another Levi jean jacket. For whatever reason it has pretty much fallen apart. I think it has to do with the thread count per inch as well as the actual thread used and how put together compared to the 50 year old jacket.
If I were to put the older jacket and the newer jacket side by side, and ask which is the newer jacket, the easy, but wrong answer would be the jacket that is 50 years old......
For those that find jeans uncomfortable, my older jeans were all initially very uncomfortable. Had to wear them for about 6 months before them broke in and became comfortable. The new ones, do not have this characteristic.

Can you please get off your soap box as your boring me already. My original comment about being surprised that you would wear such expensive jeans has its merrits and quite frankly isn't something that you should be getting your knickers or should I say jeans in a twist about. You seem to lead quite an active outdoors life which would lead me at least to think you wouldn't want to spend such an amount of money on jean which are likely to get wrecked pretty quickly. As much as I can afford to buy a pair a £140 pair of jeans I personally wouldn't then wear them to do my gardening or decorating or whatever in. I would personally rather buy the £8 pair of jeans (but not from Primark) and not be bothered if they get destroyed than buy an expensive pair and have exactly the same result. Although, having personally never bought a £140 pair of jeans I can't actually vouch as to how well they would hold up to such use and abuse. Maybe I would be surprised.
Thank you for giving me such an enthrawing insight into your social life. Whilst we're at it I happened to spend yesterday doing the red route mountain bike trail in Grizedale forest. Its classed as a difficult mountain biking trail and by 3pm I was hot, had been scrapped and scratched by the greenery and was covered in a liberal splashing of mud. Luckily by 7.30pm I had got home and scrubbed up into my own evening wear for a rather nice meal in a hotel overlooking the Langdale Pikes. Shocking, I know.

To be fair you do like to comment on things you don't really know about though. Like when you claimed that you could have got a bigger discount on a 500 than we did on scrappage despite the fact that I know a few people on forums who are dealers or are technicians at Fiat dealerships and at the time they couldn't have got any better deal than that because Fiat simply didn't do any better offers. But whatever :dozey:
GridGirl
25th March 2011, 20:19
Daniel, my main issue with discounts was never about the 500 which you always go back to because you automatically go back to your own experience of the scrappage scheme and your precious 500. My issue with scrappage was that with some models of car you could quite often get more than two grand off the list price before scrappage. You previously stated you would never ever buy a new car but changed your mind because of the the scrappage discount. Scrappage aside I see that as a flawed argument to buying a new car because you could have previously got that on another type of car. You've said numerous times you could have got in on a 500 so you don't need to repeat yourself. I saw an old car with a stickeer on it the other day that said 'I survived the scrappage scheme'. It made me chuckle anyway. :p
Oh and I could have got more than a two grand discount on a 500. That was because my audit team finally discovered how the dealerships' nice 50 odd year old female accountant was defrauding them. A two grand discount was nothing compared to how much she was stealing. Although if I was going for the discount I would have taken it on a Subaru which they were also a dealership. Sadly I couldn't take advantage but as I no longer work for the company I did maybe I should go pick up a broshure. Unlike Hazell, that dealership really does love me.

No, you actually specifically stated that you could have got a better deal because you know exactly how much they buy them for.....
You argument is flawed, the 500 was a good deal because that level of discounting was never available before. Sure you could get 2k off other cars before, but as soon as you drove them off the forecourt they were worth less than what you paid, the 500 was worth more than what we paid for it when we drove it off the forecourt.....
