OK, you have a private Dinner party and can invite 3 guests from F1. Past or present. Alive or Dead.

Who and why?

1. Big Bernie. From racing cars including a F1 meeting, being a Team owner, masterminding a Coup, redefining the whole of F1 and being involved in just about every contentious event ever to happen in the sport.

2. Schumy. I would love to get the inside tract on the most influential driver of the modern era. I also like his sense of humour.

3. Not too sure. Colin Chapman perhaps or Rob Walker as the master Garageists. Mike Hailwood or Hawthorne from a racing perspective or Ron Dennis, Frank Williams or even ken Tyrrell as owners. Will pick one later in the thread.

What on earth gave you that idea?

Are you assuming Schumi's game face is also the same outside the racing enviroment? Do you not remember how jovial he was with the BBC F1 in 2009 or even his appearance on Top Gear?

http://community.evo.co.uk/users/Harry-Metcalfe/blogs/index.cfm/2011/1/3/Meeting-Michael-Schumacher

I did an interview with Michael Schumacher, which all happened quite by chance. I'd learnt he was about to become an ambassador for the up-market watch brand, Audemars Piquet, so a trip to Germany was quickly arranged and a few days later, there I was, chatting with Michael Schumacher. All quite bizarre, especially as he wasn't at all like the person I was expecting.

For starters, he's not nearly as serious as he seems on the telly. Get him off the subject of Formula One and suddenly he's a different person. Seems he realises anything he says about F1 will be scrutinised in the minutest detail and, as a result, he watches exactly what he says, just in case he gives something away he perhaps shouldn't. But ask about his watch collection, past cars he's owned, or even the slightly odd necklace he always seems to wear (a tiger tooth apparently) and he'll happily rabbit on for hours.

After the presentation, I watched him work the room and he stuck around for far longer than anyone had expected, mainly because he really does likes watches and seemed genuinely excited he's now got the chance to work with AP on a new movement to be released sometime in the future.

There's that saying about some people being comfortable in their own skin and for me, that would sum up Michael Schumacher perfectly. At this event he was accompanied by his personal PA but at no point did she step in to stop him saying something, in fact, she spent most of the time talking to other people in the room.

Senna,

Coulthard

Barrichello

I'm not Schumacher's biggest fan - but I can see why he would be an interesting guy to chat with.

Bernie - Because he is such a clever man
Senna - Because out of all the drivers, he was the biggest character of them all.
James Hunt - so I could have someone really cool to go to the party with after meeting the previous two.

3 drivers from three very different eras, all of them won titles for Mclaren. Would be an extremely interesting conversation. :D

Yup, and I'd have Max turn up in his bondage paraphanalia to provide the entertainment between main meal and dessert...... or just leave him under the table and we can all kick the living daylights outta the little schmuck!!!! ;)

What on earth gave you that idea?
Bernie's made a career of not answering questions with direct answers and as a current driver Michael, when in the public eye, has his PR face on. All current drivers do to a greater or lesser extent. Former drivers are more willing to give their opinions because they are without team or sponsor obligations and their views on their own career as well as current F1 are more candid as a result.

Sensible choice: Mario Andretti, Gurney, Moss

Raising hell: Senna, Prost, Balestre

I can't help but imagine GW easily winding up Senna, Senna starting a food fight and/or storming out in a huff!

It was a great disappointment not to have supper with Roy Salvadori several years at Monaco, his health taking a sudden turn for the worse. I did have dinner one evening in Stutgart with Hans Herrmann, along with Doug Nye and Karl Ludvigsen, which was highly entertaining, to say the least. Had lunch and supper a number of times with Cameron Argetsinger, who created the notion of racing on the streets of Watkins Glen and then brought the USGP there in 1961. I think that having dinner with the not so obvious would be both more entertaining and enjoyable than the usual headliners. Just a thought....

Eddie Irvine, Gerhard Berger and James Hunt.

Sure, nothing of any import would be said but there'd be more than a fair chance of someone doing the Carimbó with a lampshade on their head.

There'd be an elephant, a Rolls-Royce and a television in the swimming pool, the toilet would probably end up being blown to pieces and someone somewhere would be mixing Long Island Iced Teas and Purple Problem Solvers.
YEAH! :D

...birdy num num.

1. Tommy Byrne: his book was a fantastic read and I'm intrigued to hear how he carries on. I'd say he is real "down to earth" person.
2. Perry McCarthy: seems like a nice bloke to talk to and would be up for a laugh. I'd say he has some good stories.
3. Ayrton Senna: an intriguing character who would be a very special person to meet. It would be some experience, I'd imagine.

There, obviously, speaks a true enthusiast. Forget all these people from the past 20 years — I would most probably go for exactly those three.

Though, I must say, Don's comment about some of the lesser-known figures being of potentially greater interest has much merit.

Gilles - purely for the hero worship factor,
Alan Jones - also for the hero worship, but also for the conversation (argument?) with Gilles about some of the races they had back in the day. I have fond memories of watching these on TV in the wee small hours as a lad. Oh, and he hates a beer...
James Hunt - for the same reason as GW, 'cos Jonesy and Gilles will have either "taken it outside", or passed out from trying to out drink one another. Hunt could party most people into a coma, I recon.

Clark and MS

Because they were/are in such different eras, along with Mario Andretti, who drove cars from the 1960's to the 1990's (about the only driver who competitively drove cars through the non-winged and winged eras although stewart and some others drove a bit into the partially winged era) and who can be excellent at conversation about cars and racing when he wants to be....would like to toss in Moss, Gurney and Senna for some spark to the conversation if I could

Senna, G. Villeneuve, Chapman.

Because if I could also resurrect people from death to come to a dinner with me, I would very much like to know, what would those guys think about current developments in F1, but also in life in general. :)

I'd also invite Murray Walker, Henri Toivenen, Ari Vatanen and Marcus Gronhom if allowed. ;)

Senna. Needs no explanation. Just want to hear what the great man has to say. And his personality would be a treat at the dinner table!

Webber. Im Aussie, he's Aussie. It's a fanboy thing! ;)

Newey. Would love to hear this man speak half-way through a bottle of red. The kinda guy you have a notepad and tape recorder whenever he says something, even 'pass the salt'.

Missed out:
Bernie, he'd make my extended bench - err table - but I think he's be boring and obnoxious.
Schumacher, a champion for sure but I don't thinkl you could get him to open up too easily and a closed Schumacher would be a horrible tease.
Coulthard, would love his personality at the table. Forever the prankster. Of all the guys in F1 I think he and Webber would be the best to get drunk with!
Heikki, a prankter from way back.
