Crossing out the ones I never saw (which is over half of them), pretty much the perfect list

By the way, if you haven't seen Justified I'd highly recommend it. Elmore Leonard's humour added to Timothy Olyphant's pretty face make very good viewing once your brain switches off it's reality meter :)

This list doesn't include:

Insp. Lestrade
Insp. James Japp
Insp. Morse
Insp. Wexford
DCI Jim Taggart
DCI Tom Barnarby
Kommissar Rex

Top 20 Lawmen ever? I fart in the general direction of that list.

No Bergerac? No Steve Sloan? This isn't a list, this isn't even fit to be friends with a list :p :

Quite right.

Morse. Bergerac. Barnaby. Barnaby's first sidekick Troy. Mark Sloan. Steve Sloan. Jessica Fletcher. Frost. Poirot. Maigret. Marple. There's 11 for a start.

No Piet Van der Valk either.

Couldn't agree more. And a wonderfully charismatic car in the latter-day series, too — a brown 1986 Audi 80.

Has anyone played Philip Marlowe on t' telly? If so, I imagine that there's a TV show I would quite like to see. The telly program would have to excellent though if it was to match the writing by Raymond Chandler.

What a farce that list is. How can there be no Chuck Norris (Walker, Texas Ranger), the greatest lawman show ever :D

Where are Repomies and Pöysti from your list?

Matlock, Columbo, Cannon. I'm old school.

And of course Chief Wiggum.

Any list without Marshal Matthew Dillon is a farce.

I'm afraid they're not close enough to the fascinating.

My list?

Andy Griffth...the quintessential small town cop.
Bubba (Heat of the Night)
Columbo, a man that made you want to confess just to get him out of there.
Inspector Morse
Constable Fraser from "Due South" (corny humour based on picking on Canadian/American stereotypes...but the kind of cop you wish all cops could be!)
Marshal Dillon (Gunsmoke)
Baretta (Robert Blake's best role)
Detective Beckett (Castle, the woman is HOT)
Lennie Briscoe and all the other cops on the original "Law and Order"
Ed Lane (one of the Special Response cops in "Flashpoint")
Barney Miller (a cop who also was a great guy and boss with humour)
Jethro Gibbs (NCIS's most interesting character)
Steve McGarrett (the new 5-0 and the old one)
Detective Belker (Hill St. Blues)
Patrolman Milloy (Adam 12)
Patrolman Baker (Chips)
Detective Ironside (Ironside)
Detective Becker (Rockford Files)
Chief Jesse Stone (Robert B. Parker's Jesse Stone mysteries as portrayed by Tom Selleck, who plays a cop fighting booze in a small town and just is WAY cool)
.....

There..almost made 20 cops, and only one from the BBC (so fill in your best UK/European show characters)

All the cops I picked were/are on network TV in the US and are ranging from comedy to serious shows.......

An honorary member should be Hercule Poirot.

Constable Benton Fraser, of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, is top shout Mark. Really enjoyable show and a great theme tune.

My list?

Constable Fraser from "Due South" (corny humour based on picking on Canadian/American stereotypes...but the kind of cop you wish all cops could be!)
.......

It was a BRILLIANT show. Loved everything about it. The theme song (Due south, that's the way I'm going...), the pet wolf, the whole times by 5 divide by 8 thing for miles to kilometres per hour. GENIUS!

i'd like to add Gösta Ekmans portrayal of "detective superintendent" Martin Beck and i also would like to add Per Oscarsson's role as police commissioner Gustav Jörgensen
in the Series about the police in the small Swedish west coast town Strömstad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Str%C3%B6mstad).
