Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Ingles will feature night stages when it hosts the second round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge in April.
The event, which is based on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, will take place from 14-16 April. To accommodate the night-time runs, organisers have made several changes to the event itinerary with day one's action getting underway on Friday at 13:00hrs local time and not finishing until the early hours of Saturday morning on April 16.
Crews and their teams will then get a short rest before the rally continues at 07:30hrs on Saturday. The finish is scheduled for 14:30hrs later that day.
In total the rally will feature 12 special stages with a competitive distance of 190.59 kilometres.
The bulk of the stages on Friday 15 April will focus on the south of the island initially before crews head to the north of the island for the two night stages, Valleseco and Tejeda, which start at 22:16hrs and 22:49hrs respectively.
Saturday's stages are the same as those used on Friday night, albeit run in the reverse direction.

Scandola is doing limited IRC program of some five events I think. He is former Abarth test driver who drove several IRC events in previous seasons. Always quite fast but very accident prone.

Gran Canaria is an island with its own microclimate. It is not unusual to spend half an hour in a dense fog in the central mountains to 30 degrees Celsius in the southern beaches of the island.
Contrary to popular belief, although it is usually an island of sunshine and beaches, from December to May is not unusual to do a little cold in the center-north.
The rally has been run many times under heavy rain (never on snow).

It is difficult to make predictions so early. Perhaps the weather sites that will bring sunshine and make a great 30 degrees, but the reality is that in the southern sections may be so, and in the north to be raining and thick fog. It is difficult to predict.

Under normal conditions I doubt Toni can win on tarmac this year, especially with Hankooks which are probably not as good as Michelin. He was quite a long way off the pace on Monte. Looking forward to seeing him though, he will be a nice addition to the championship.

I agree. It is not logical for the spectators and I don't understand how the sponsors could be happy when they only compete in their national rally as there is an important international rally on the same roads.
One of the good things of the ERC and IRC is that the best local drivers can compete for a good result in their home rally, while this isn't the case anymore for years in the WRC due to the high costs and the stupid regulations there.
Pons isn't fast enough to compete for a good result in IRC. I still don't understand why Pons was SWRC champion last year. Hevia is (much) faster.

Fully agree with that, plus if somebody does that as local driver beating top IRC guys, it could give him maybe more oppertunities for his career. Xevi Pons is definately scared and his SWRC was a fluke sadly.

No money, this is the problem. In Spain, private companies invest little in racing (except F1) for television that have little impact, and after brands such as Peugeot, Citroën ... Not to mention, is to mourn. If Alberto had a budget to do test's as the best drivers in the IRC no doubt he could fight them, then there is the issue of Xevi Pons, and we all saw how he won it last year the SWRC, never being faster. In my opinion, not be competitive against the best drivers in the IRC.
PLuto
10th April 2011, 18:51
Yes, it is always about money. But look at your championship - spanish teams are investing into Supercup GT Cars, into improving N4 cars into N4+, making lower weight of S2000 - everything costs money and should be used only on home events. It is about money, but also about good will...

What are the weatherpredictions for the end of the week and the weekend? Just to know what kind of clothes i should take with me. :D
Weather..
Well, down to the sea-level its should be between +18..+21 degrees during the whole rally.
Wind speed should not exceed 3-5m/s, so windchill never drops below 18 degrees. That is good weather for shorts and T-shirt.. and beer :-)
There should not be any rain. Mostly clear sky, maybe some clouds on Friday.
However, most of the stages are running on the higher altitudes and should be like this.
SS1,4 +20
SS2,5 +18-first part.. +15 last part
SS3,6 +17 start..+12 in the middle and +15 at the end
SS7 +10..+12 whole distance
SS8 Start and finish +12..+14. Most of the stage +9..+10 degrees
SS9,11 Practically the same as previous
SS12,14 Whole stage between +12..+14 degrees
So, starting from stage 7, it should be nice to have some warmer clothing :-)

And PG, don't be so hard on him. Basso is specialist on these kind of roads, PG had a 2 punctures and lost a lot of time. Look at the last stage for example: he only gives 7 secs away on 23km on Basso. That is fine I think. Could Basso do the same in reverse on gravel? I have my doubts ;)

Hänninen is maybe the best Finn on tarmac since Toivonen, Mikkelsen is doing better than i thought which is good to see. But this "hype" about PG is all about his speed, and not reliabilty, on gravel and snow where he is pretty fast indeed. Its good that he does some tarmac events too, cause thats really not his strongest areas, never has been. So to think he could have been fighting for top positions here, or against some tarmac experts, is bit silly.
Going to be a mega end to the rally. Shame we don't have live tv here... hope for the same battle in Corsica!

I don't think it is that PG is over-rated, it's just that Basso is awesome on this type of rally. I doubt there are many drivers out there who would beat him in these conditions. I remember on Sanremo last year he won one of the night stages by something like 13s (in a Punto) and was "not happy with his driving"
Remember also the last night on Monte once Basso got used to the 207. He only won one stage there, but on the other hand P Solberg in the works car didn't win any.

basso is fast but considering the gains with suspension(easy 1sec/km) and engine(?), not really faster than anyone else that has driven this car?

It's pretty hard to say for sure as i don't remember Proton having such a trouble free run any of last year. However I think they have made a step forward in all areas here (car and driver)
Looks like first tarmac win for Juho! Congratulations to him, it was a great drive. Great rally!

Oppose to Proton Basso proved himself to be able to win in tarmac rallies. So I really don't believe Proton made such huuuge step forward. You play with numbers like 1 sec/km was something easy to reach. That's huge difference in fact.

Juha Hanninen is very impressive, and back in the lead again in the IRC. Hopefully he will have the same speed and luck in SWRC in next rounds.
Hanninen 33 points
Bouffier 31
Loix 30
Wilks 25
Kopecky 22
Neuville 15

You are wrong, he is not overrated, its just that he's simply not as fast as Basso on Tarmac .... Remember his stage times when he was driving an Evo 10 in an IRC outing last year, his stage times were right behind some of the front runners.
Wait till you see PG and the Proton on gravel. I think he'll be much more closer to the Pugs and Skodas.... The power deficit on the proton won't be as much of a significant impediment on gravel as it clearly is on Tarmac......
Take into account the 1980's Group A Mazda 323, with a tiny 1.6 litre engine, no where near the Lancias on Tarmac but able to live with the Deltas on gravel as proved by Ingvar Carlsson

Yes, the sWRC champ with a 50kg lighter car would have finished 9th, just in front of Basso.

I didn't expect too much from Pons, but i was dissapointed in performance of Alberto Hevia, i expected him to be a lot quicker. Only Fuster was impressive in the "big" Porsche.

I've noticed very late this results from national drivers-well done Miguel Fuster !! He is the real hero for me!!! Porsche yust one minute behind top-spec car&top driver in a rally...oh my god......What would happen, if Vallejo would drive this car, as he was always faster than Fuster??? This would be a humiliation for regular IRC drivers...

I must say Fuster isnt so big hero for me. Last year on Asturias he was starting with S2000 and was absolutely out of Hevia (also if I dont count puncture). This supercup "monster" Porsche is very good on this good tarmac in Spain.

I respect your opinion and partly agree with it-Fuster is for me not equivalent to Vallejo or Hevia, but obviousley he has the courage to drive this monster-and what a monster it is. I'm one of the few who had many times opportunity to be driven in a street 911 GT3, and what a car it is-it is brutal, very, very sneaky, the rear has always a wish for going itself.....Therefore I always admire 911 drivers on rallyes, as belive me, this car will punish you for every irregularity during the hard , fast drive......S2000 is a pussy compare to this ''monster''. So, more 911's on rallyes, more fun for spectators, here you should agree with me!!

Not really as it is a different spec of car. You may as well say that if Matt Wilson turned up in a Fiesta WRC it would be a humilation for IRC drivers (although that is probably the only way Matt could win an IRC event!)
I strongly believe that those who were fighting at the top in Canarias are some of the best tarmac rally drivers in the world.
Anyway, from memory weren't the GT cars closer to the top pace last year? (and so was Hevia for that matter)
Mirek
20th April 2011, 13:20
Yes, they were much closer probably because they had previous experience with Canrias. This year top IRC driver had the experience also and without the handicap they stepped in higher league. And it should also be mentioned that this Porsche is quite far from GT3. This one is circuit special, not an ordinary GT3. Don't know if they still use it but Vallejo used to have even traction control in the car.

Yes.....structure of the vehicle, which goes back almost 50 years, the engine behind the rear axle (weight distribution) against laboratory state-of the art (only for rally) designed vehicle, yust rear wheel drive against four wheel drive, at least 150 kg more weight....yes, 911 drivers are heros...lol !!

The car is not 150 kg heavier because it is not stock GT3. It is Supercup car which has only little more than S2000. The power is around 470 Hp if I have good info. It has double shock absorbers, better suspension kinematics (no mandatory McPherson which isn't good for tarmac), ceramic brakes with 380 mm discs, 19' wheels with 305 mm tyres, traction control, plastic door, windows etc. The biggest problem probably is gearbox because shortest Supercup gearbox has top speed 247 km/h and that is way too much for such twisty roads. 2WD is no problem on perfect dry tarmac with traction control. It's probably even better because 4WD without center differential is understeering from its nature. Also there is much more power lost in transmission of 4WD.
For sure it was the fastest car in Canarias and if Hänninen drove it, he would probably win easily.

In the recent issue of “Vauhdin maailma” there was a presentation of a Porsche 911 GT3 intended for the FIA GT3 circuit. Its weight is 1160 kg but of course a rally version is heavier because of two seats etc. The power of this one is 440 PS.

Mirek even with supercup gearbox there is no problem, cause of almost 450Nm torque with very wide curve from 3,8 liter engine.
