The day I am most excited about; has Newey rewritten the rule book again or has the design reach a plateaux of ever decreasing returns? Will Williams start the season as strong as they finished the last? The basic design philosophy last season seems to be the accepted norm now - very high nose, heavily tapered rear, blown diffuser etc - but whist that's an advantage to them their lack of running, ever, with KERS won't help.

Newey's overrated. Great engineer sure but people go on like he's some kind of design god. He's designed as many duds as he has dominant cars.

In any case it is always exciting to see what he comes up with, a winner or a lemon. I hope it is a winner and we have a cracking season.

Agreed. Newey is great at what he does; areo/thinging outside the box, but he, as you say, never builds an average car, it's either Mega or dreadful - usually because he has pushed the envelope too far. But that's great for F1, we need those kind of people.

you've got to break a few eggs to make an omelet
personally I'd take a newey hit or miss any day over an average consistent mid pack running vehicle that will never get a sniff of victory.
Yeah he does push the envelope, but his hits are world championship material cars and his duds, can still win the occasional race or challenge for wins. I'd take that any day

The Williams instantly becomes my fave of the year! Just look at it, LOOK AT IT! *dribble*
Also, it may just be the poor picture res but am I the only one seeing ripples running from the cockpit down to the cock bottle? Three of them running through the PDVSA logo.
A worrying lack of sponsorship though :( but at least it makes the numbers readable for the first time in decades.

Ultra slim coke bottle on the RBR, perhaps the slimmest I've ever seen!
Looks like what should've been the RBR5 if multi-deck diffusers were banned in '09

He pushes the envelope of design.
Colin Chapman's cars were quick, beautiful but fragile.
Given the choice, I think most people will go for excitement than something blandness.
Sport cannot exist without this emotion

What is that seemingly aero piece mounted on that most forward rear upper suspension stay ?
I thought the rules forbade anyone using aero devices on suspension bits .
Or , perhaps it's just the actual item , itself , that cannot be shaped to provide downforce ?
It's also very visible in post #10's pictures .

The pic resolutions a bit low. Do you mean the bit that looks like the finger of a glove?
Bagwan

Yep .
But , on further inspection of the photos in post #10 , I now see that that "finger" is actually attached , not to the suspension arm , but , to a piece coming up from beside the wheel .
Sorry . False alarm .

Let's focus on the present, friend. RBR are a young team compared to Ferrari. Their budget is also more constrained than McLaren and Ferrari. I think they've accomplished a lot for such a short amount of time. Not to mention a better designed car for 2011. :D

Going to be difficult to tell the Red Bull & STR apart again.. although I suppose one will be nearer the front than the other will :D

Has anyone else noticed the tremendous irony that Hugo Chávez is a very vocal opponent of capitalism yet is prepared to throw state money in sponsorship of both the state owned oil company and the country itself into what's arguably a highly capitalist sport?
I find it amusing considering that Williams at one point also had the name of Bin Laden of their cars as well.
I guess it doesn't matter who you take your money from does it? :D

By Jove, Adrian!
I've been wondering why the exhausts were very low and angled.
http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2011/02/02/red-bull-rb7-open-fronted-exhaust-blown-diffuser/
“ The only openings in the diffuser are the starter motor hole and a 5cm area on the outer section of floor. Exhausts could be routed to this outer section of floor, but routing the large diameter exhausts across the floor could create their own blockage effect in-between the rear wheels. Offsetting the benefit they are supposed to provide.” (http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2011/01/27/2011-trends-and-solutions/)
It appears Newey had the same idea and has presented the modified RB7 with flattened exhausts reaching rearwards under carbon over these reach towards the outer 5cm of floor and blow under the raised lip in the floor. The fast moving exhaust gas then curves inside and blows out via the sidewall of the diffuser (shown below with the red arrow).

Something about this trick forward facing exhaust sounds fishy to me .
Remembering the exhaust stickers from last year has me wondering if Newey is messing with the other designers , getting them in a panic about just what is going on there .
It seems too early to let this cat out of the bag .
I am wondering if the cat is really a red herring .
The concept of adding heat to the underside of the car too far forwards seems flawed to me . Adding it to the mix farther back makes more sense , as the gasses are expanding due to the diffuser , and adding heat should help that expansion .
But adding it too far forward would have the gasses expanding under the car , where you are trying to speed them up by dropping the pressure .
Tossing all that heat out in front of the rear tire seems a bit sketchy to me as well .
I think we'll see a few different bends in those pipes at the first race , if not before .

Williams have unveiled their final livery:

There are hints that it might be quite nice, but I can only assume it is in fact pig-ugly since they apparently consider it best displayed with the lights turned off.

I agree, it looks absolutely elegant. I always liked the Rothmans livery although not as memorable as their blue white and yellow (1985-1993) with which they had the vast majority of their success
Its becoming a bit of a theme this season, all these "retro" liveries. Renault running in JPS Black and Gold, Team Lotus in classic 60's Lotus Green and Yellow and now Williams returning to their mid 90's Blue, white red and gold.

At first glance I didn't care for it but after closer inspection I've changed my mind. One thing I would change is the white barge board. It needs to be navy so it doesn't stand out like a turd in a punch bowl.
Of course the livery will have to be banned. If the Renault is subliminally advertising JPS, the Ferrari logo doing the same for Marlboro then this will most definitely cause people to start smoking Rothmans. ;)

unfortunatly you are correct but at least it looks clean, though the blue sidepods are begging for PDVSA to be written in white on them simply for marketing reasons.
