Your car's full service - how much?

For the first time in my life, I'm shelling out for a full service on a vehicle. In the past we've bought the gear and done them ourselves (takes so little time on Land Rovers, etc) but the old Jaguar I bought hadn't been done in years and looked a bit more complicated .... and I stupidly thought 'how much can it be?'

Two hundred and fifty bloody quid! :eek:

That's at a local non-dealer who's hourly rate is low. Dealers are nearer £400 on my car, I'm told.

Is this normal?

My most expensive service cost £300 but did include front pads and discs for both fronts. I don't normally pay more than £150 if it's the 'bigger' service.

I get my car serviced in Morley, Leeds. No Ford garage in the Black Country or Birmingham can cone close to matching prices in Leeds. I've seen on forums the prices some pay down south. Even at today's fuel prices it's worth driving 'ooppp norf!

I would certainly look on forums and post on a Jag/S type specific forum to see what other people pay as well as what's involved.

As for service costs. £120 for our 500 though dealers wanted anything from £190-250 but I bought genuine bits in bulk through a website plus ebay (I bought enough for the first three services) and I called up the dealer I bought the car from and said "My local garage will do it for x amount, what will you do it for?" and they pricematched :) So whilst it didn't need to go to a dealer to maintain warranty, it's got dealer stamps in the service history :)

do mine myself,Buy parts from Europarts,at Leeds Merc 220d or fiesta 1.8d Oil filter ,Air filter and 5 litres Semi Synthetic oil,less than £ 20.Usually use garage at friends car sales garage or garage friends ramp ,fit parts and swop wheels round at every 6K,he stamps book,so full service record.Oh and i have C&G ,and National Craftmans Certificate in Motor Vehicle Engineering,so i dont get my shirt pinned up by any dodgy service garages

Welcome to the Jaguar family, Hazell. :wave: The main reason I don't have a drinking or drug problem is not because I am a good & moral person. Far from it. I have two Jags, so I simply can't afford alcohol or drugs. If you buy a Porsche or a Ferrari, not only will you stay away from booze and drugs, I'm told that at least two days a week, food also becomes a needless luxury.

It's been years since I've had either of our two vehicles in a dealer for service. They're simply a rip-off IMO. If I remember correctly, a full service for the Mazda was ~$500.
What tinkering I can't do myself, I'll source from an independant grease-monkey :mark:

Tannat, it's depreciated already - it's a 2000 V6 3L S-type. Well under a thousand pounds yet in lovely condition to look at. Fully tooled up, too.

Jag, I already don't drink and drugs are free round here (I'm told), so I can still eat so long as the car doesn't need to drink :D

Sheffield, for the record, is a bit in the middle that seems south if you're on the way north and north if you're darf sarf. It has good sex shops and auction houses (long story, but I know) like the south and masses of teenaged mums like the north.

Full service plus my MOT costs 190.00 quid plus my garage picked up my car washed it and dropped it off

I paid $900 for the timing belt and water pump to be changed at a local shop after a dealer wanted $1,300. The usual 90,000 mile maintenance is close to $600 for what amounts to a check of fluids and only guarantees an oil change ($35 at the place I go), topping off the coolant (done free at each oil change by the shop), new fluid for the brakes and transmission and new spark plugs (all three are pretty easy to do), with any other work done costing extra.

Basically a series of safety and vehicle maintenance checks by a professional mechanic goes through to make sure your car is road worthy.

Nothing. Mine's free (well ok not exactly free, I paid it up front when I purchased Ford's PremierCare plan when I bought the Mustang). About the only thing I have to pay for is tires.

7 years/84,000 miles-it had the effect of pushing my bumper to bumper warranty out that far as well. Heck, even the clutch disc (which is only warrantied for 1 year/12,000 miles) is covered.
