I have a high speed internet connection with Optus and I just did a speed test and it is 4.83mb/s. Is this high speed or should I check my internet connection?

Depends on what you pay for and where you test it as well. Often when testing you will get some variance in results based on the location you connect to. Our service with Verizon is based on speed/price packages.

I just got a little over 30 mb/s, which is right about what we pay for. But for surfing forums and such you probably wouldn't notice a lot of difference between your connection and mine. Downloading files and such really shows the speed differences, but the average user isn't doing as much of that.

What speed do you pay for? If you pay for 4Mbps then that's mind blowing, if you pay for 20Mbps, that's a bit crappy!

If you want to check your download speed, you can download Vista SP1 off of the Microsoft website or the OpenOffice torrent from here: http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/ . Either of those two will usually max out your connection speed.

I just checked my internet speed using http://www.speedtest.net/ and it gave me 16.74 Mbps download and 3.55 Mbps upload speed, and I'm paying for a 25 Mbps download speed. :mad: :p Well, but these are usually dependent on the server you choose, because you can get different results from different servers. For example, I checked with another server, and it gave me 22.76 Mbps, and with a third server, 24.4 Mbps. Also sometimes people get confused between megabits and megabytes, because many ISPs advertise their internet speed in megabits on their website and on brochures, which can be confusing, so check that too. The local internet provider's office is filled with angry customers who say they were duped because the company advertised 25 Mbps and their download speed never goes beyond 3 Mbps. :p

All the results I wrote above are in Megabits, and Speedtest.net will also show you the results in Megabits. The way they're denoted can be confusing as well.

Megabytes = MBPS
Megabits = Mbps
1 megabyte = 8 megabits.

Well I should get 20 Mb/s download and 1 Mbps upload still never seen it over 7 Mb/s and 0.7Mbps respectively during the last 3 years.

I was paying for "up to" 6Mbps and getting about 3.5 until last week.
After about 3 years I finally got my donkey in gear and switched to Kabel... now it's "up to 100" (current spot check is 88/6) for the same price :crazy: :D :dozey:

If you're paying for "up to 6 Mbit" then I doubt there's much you can do, but I'd say 4.8 is good enough for general use anyway :)
