View Full Version : my ideas (idea) factory

Right then, the other day I came up with an idea for a new, motorsport related website. Trouble is, I don't know if this is a brilliant or awful idea. So you can decide that for me, feed me back your thoughts and I promise not to be offended. If I get good feedback (and/or ideas to enhance it are suggested) , I may well indeed create this website. Anyway, here goes;

I've noticed that many motor racing related websites on the internet concentrate heavily on the present-ie, lots of places giving the latest goings on, rumours, news etc. That's fine, but what If fans want to read great, entralling articles about the past? or, about the future? where do they go? For the most part, there seems to be little in this particular field.

Thus, what I propose is a motor racing website designed by the fans for the fans, that emcompasses the past, the present and the future. I thought this could become a great place to visit if they are enthralled by motorsport, and for those who visited, could be their internet motor racing hub.

These are the rough ideas I've come up with for the website;
A news section-possibly in partnership with another motor racing website which specialises more on the news side
Opinions section-where the editor gives their opinions about the latest motor racing goings on, and also where guest writers can write and share their articles
Nostalgia section-articles and photos from motor racing's past, which are shared by users and guest writers
Future section-Where people post articles based on their visions for motorsport, how they would do things, where motor racing in general or a particular series/genre should be taken etc, again all done by the editor or users of the website. I thought another idea would be to have a 'Concepts' feature, where people can share their concept images/drawings/sketches for dream racing cars, which could ofcourse accompany their articles about their visions.
Forum-Link to one of the major motorsport forums, possibly this one (obviously with the site and forum working together, like motorsport.com and BTCCpages have done for this forum)
Media section-Where motor racings media is examined and scrutinized, and also videos, photos etc of motor races can also be featured by users sharing them.

I realise that all of the above are touched on in some way occasionally on this forum, and I think many users particularly enjoy sharing their concepts about the future. I think this website idea could make that into a bigger thing.

Also, I'd need some help setting up a quality, proffesional website. I can make clean and slick websites with free things like weebly, but in the wider internet world I do not know where I am at. Luckily I might know a few people who could help me out but we will have to see what that brings.

So, over to you. Tell me your thoughts, be honest, and don't hold back :) suggestions are particularly welcome....

You are very ambitious!

For your idea to work decently it would need a very good editorial staff. For example your proposed "future" section: have you ever read the meandering rants of forumusers here? Often there is little basis in what could actually work in reality. Do you want your website to be filled with that sort of over-the-top articles? If you don't, you need good editors to weed out the nonsense.

The "present" section, well everybody does that and better.

For your "past" section: I think this would best work in a forum kind of system, where someone drops a subject and other people can immidiately chime in with their stories/pictures/corrections. The people here probably have lots of small stories to tell about their experiences, but they are I think to informal to put on a website. That is why I think a forum is more informal, and therefore more likely to gain the results you want.
I have always been a little surprised this forum doesn't have a nostalgia forum (only one chucked away in the F1 part).

Dan, have you ever looked here?

That particular forum already has a wealth of motorsport history.

Yes, at least you were doing just that. Thinking. I see where you are going with your idea. Most magazines and websites just give you the identical same news. They seem to copy one another.

I recall many years back when F1 drivers were paid little and guys like Derek Daly had to find a sponsor to race with Williams. It would be interesting to read about that.

Also, Jordan was the first team to give Michael Schumacher a ride. One race and gone.

There was a 7UP sponsorship deal that Jordan had and after they had a really good season (1st) 7UP wanted to continue at 1 million pounds for the year.

Jordan, although he had nothing lined up and the season about to begin told the to stuff it, or words to that effect.

Lo and behold, Sasol(sic) came along with 8 million pounds and Jordan was established.

I see your point. Many stories out there. Daly by the way had an old bus he used as a home. Couldn't afford rent.

Don't give up on your idea. I believe there is ample room for a good site with guest columnists. Just a thought.

thanks for the advice. Remember it was more than just about the past as well :)

I'm still trying to think of something unique at the moment as well.
