McLaren changing colors?

No they're not changing colours. That's obviously photoshopped. Ferrari aren't going to have a green livery just cause someone abuses photoshop either.

Indeed. And every time you see photo's of the road car (what's it called? 4 12/c or something) it's always in orange. Perhaps McLaren are trying to develop a new brand from themselves that they will bring to F1 when the Merc deal ends.

well, If Mclaren were to ever change colours from that brilliant silver and red scheme....it will be to Orange. not black. And to me, that wouldn't happen until the deal with mercedes ends, and I assume that by then that Mclaren will produce their own engines.

you are perfectly correct. Twin turbo V8 I believe, which is the sort of engine I'd love to see in F1..........

An orange McLaren would be good, but unless their road car division is going to start funding the racing team to the tune of whatever Vodafone does now, then it'll be the mobile phone company who gets most of the say, I imagine.

Unless they can convince a certain rival of Vodafone to sponsor them instead, of course...

There will always be speculations without ground I suppose (or in this case maybe nothing more than a fan made idea without any agenda or real life relevance to it).

Just have to add though that I liked it in black, but then again I've never been a fan of McLarens silver (that looks better on the Mercs IMO).

A hint about McLaren's branding and livery plans for 2011 is in the new official merchandising range for the forthcoming season.
For example, gone are the silver team caps of 2010, replaced by mainly black ones for 2011. The team crew and management-style shirts and jackets are also black.

As far as Vodafone are concerned, they probably could be convinced to have their colour displayed in black on an orange car. For a while, England's One Day Cricket strip was mainly blue with the Vodafone logo in white.

It might be possible for the majority of the MP4-27 to be orange and the Vodafone splashes in black. The car might look a little like this Spyker, but with sponsors changed as appropriate:

Bruce McLaren came from New Zealand; New Zealand should have the colour scheme of Green with a Silver Stripe. However for the first GP for a McLaren to appear in Monaco 1966, they reversed the colours.

Technically the German color for car racing is white, and there are all sorts of theories as to why German cars went silver, including the Mercedes W25 being 1kg overweight and having all of the paint shaved off.

Whatever reason for German car actually being silver, McLaren didn't appear with a silver livery until the 1997 when West took over from Marlboro. The Mercedes Silver was incidental until 2000 when Daimler bought 40% of the team.

Britian was Green because Ireland was then part of the UK before the GPO rising and races were held there as they were not allowed in the mainland.

Germany was white, France Blue and Italy Red which was why we were buggered on the traditional colours.

Not 100% sure as this was from a long time ago when I did a bit of research into the origions of Motorsport at the turn of the century.

I vaguely remember reading a story about BRG's origins - I forget which one but it went one of two ways. A British driver entered a race on the continent and was assigned the number 13, traditionally considered unlucky in this country by some. And then either:

1) Green was considered a lucky colour so he painted his car green to offset the number

or

2) Green was considered an unlucky colour so he painted his car green to make some sort of point to the organisers.

Can't remember which.

Either way it's something I vaguely remember reading a long time ago and can't remember where, so don't take it as gospel. The Ireland theory does make more sense to be honest.

Ireland and Great Britain were still part of the UK in the early 1900's. However motor sport was illegal in Great Britain but not in Ireland. Green was used to represent that they were racing in Ireland.

As silly as this thread may be I actually find it relaxing and instructive as well.

Thank you all for your very interesting answers to my question about national colors. And speaking of which I had not idea that Belgium had a racing color at all.

And you know, I think a green Ferrari would look incredibly awesome. :) :)

When racing, those orange cars showed up best. That is a great color that really distinguishes the cars from others in a field, when all are at speed. :D

Photos and TV do not show it as much as when you see the racing live.

Very surprized some other teams have not adopted similar colors more often.

I think that there were four such cars all owned by Tony Vandervell, who eventually used one of them as the basis of the first Vanwall (with the help of Colin Chapman). Vanwall's best result was winning the 1958 Constructors Championship.

Then its true, retro liveries can work, Ferrari have done it, Team Lotus also last year, Renault last year and this too.

All we need is Williams to return to their White/Green and its perfect, oh and while we're at it, Toro Rosso to run in the original Minardi Black/Yellow too
