French rallies' website's for non-French speaking are not much better :-) But there aren't many entries yet to speculate from in case of Arctic rally.

Why not? :) Solowow was often driving both Arctic and Sweden in the past. Now he has also snow event in Poland which makes it even more important for him.

You are both right! Just a small problem for him will be the fact that during polish winter rally he won't be allowed to use long, swedish type of studs.
For many years he was doing Arctic, they say it's kind of "tradition" right now :)

Matti Rantanen will drive the rally with Ari Laivola's Peugeot 207 S2000 which has been updated with a new engine. Codriver will be, as normally, Mikko Lukka.

His main target is to drive international gravel rallies in the summer and autumn, most likely WRC rallies.

iRally reports that one Fiesta will do the rally. With Mikko and JML sharing the car, with one driver having each day. The question is, who drives on day 2, the longest of the two days?

Tom206wrc
16th January 2011, 13:12
Maybe Hirvonen, who is more "reliable" on long distances(less crashes...) :D

Juha_Koo
16th January 2011, 13:34
It really bothers me if Mikko gets to drive the longer day by decision by the team. I have no idea why Mikko should be considered as a lead driver after last season. And it's really nothing personal but I just think that with right support from the team, and being that Fiesta is fast enough, JML could really fight for the championship win this season.

In my opinion, they should do rock, paper & scissors to decide. :)

^^ The only problem with that is it might be a doubled sided coin..

I just hope for the championship that Mikko is competitive. Where abouts is this rally in Finland? Far north?

Based in Rovaniemi (http://maps.google.fi/maps?hl=fi&rlz=&=&q=rovaniemi&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl), so the HQ is just below Arctic Circle.

Entries will close today. 89 cars at the moment, 25 of which are N4. 2 Fiesta S2000 and 1 207 S2000 and 1 Fabia S2000.

Entries closed. 128 drivers there with official entries from Latvala and Hirvonen included. I see Jarkko Nikara there also with an Evo 9.

One positive surprise is to see Juha Vuorela's name there also on Gr. A Evo 7 (I think). Haven't saw his name on any list for 2-3 years now, he had good pace before 2007.

Father Latvala will be there as usual in the blue TJJ-777 Escort BDA.

Yep! It´s Pirelli Sottozero Ice 16" for both Finnish Championship classes (SM1 & SM2) in the winter and Pirelli K4 (or K6) for the summer rallies.

...And tyre regulations in the Arctic Rally are per FRC regulations. It means 16" wheels for Fiesta WRC (and Super 2000) cars also even though they use 15" wheels in the WRC Sweden. But I strongly believe organizer make official bulletin to allow 15"....

The tire rule is only for classes SM1, SM2 and SC3. 2011 WRC's have their own class (11) and they use the 2011 FIA WRC technical regulations.

You mean that Class 11 will use all regulations as per 2011 FIA WRC technical regulations? I'm pretty sure that we won't see JML and Mikko filling the tank with regular pump gasoline... :D

Event organisers may have additional classes according to their supplementary regulations. Each event will have a support class for WRCars homologated in 2011.
This class will start before the FRC classes.
They may use tyres complying with either WRC or FRC regulations,
with no limitation to their amount.

Results from here: http://tulossivu.autourheilu.fi/

[Choose class: SM1=4wd, SM2=2wd. Also choose rally: Day 1 or Day 2 or overall]

First short stage is running, only small differences between the first crews. But Juha Salo was fastest.

Rally has four longer stages today - of which SS2 is live now as well.

I thought the same first, but it rules out. The roads in the forests are said to be in horrid conditions (not SS2 though), because of hardly any frost on the surface, it's just soft snow and gravel.

Only one 3,7 km SS left during the first day and Nikara is leading over 40 seconds. Juha Salo had a full attack on the SS 4 and was over ten seconds faster than Lindroos, Tuohino and Rantanen, but Nikara was able to beat him by 1,8 seconds.

Dominant performance by Jarkko and has to remember that Evo 9 can not be better than Super 2000´s, Evo X or TMR´s WRX STi...

Nikara started to shine when the "night"-stages started. Still tight battle in 2WD class, Lappi (C2R2) and Korhonen (Fiesta R2) separated by just 0,3sec before the last short stage.

EDIT: And the rally includes two FRC events so its fight for the points tonight.

EDIT2: Retirement for Rantanen (technical)

Surprising pace by Korhonen with the Fiesta R2. Great to see some other cars on the top than Civic Type R...

EDIT2: Retirement for Rantanen (technical)

Unfortunately not a big surprise. Laivola´s 207 Super 2000 (ex. Peugeot Sweden) has always struggled with technical problems. Nikara lost his top ten NORF result last year and now it seems to be Rantanen´s turn...

Mänty was leading after the SS 2, but retired during the SS 3 (driveshaft). Pinomäki had problems with the "helmet phone" and did not hear the notes, but was 5th overall. It the other site it was said that Korhonen had driveshaft failure on the "hippo", but did not know which one is the real reason...

Nikara slid off the road during the SS 7 and lost about 20 minutes, but finished the rally and would have won the overall competion without that time loss.

Juha Salo won the second day (also the overall event), Joonas Lindroos was fastest on the SS 10 and was able to pass Tuohino, who was third. Rantanen retired also today (some mechanical problems). Lappi (C2 R2) won the SM2 catecory, Mänty (Civic) second and Korhonen (Fiesta) third.

So I was not that mistaken believing Salo and Rantanen would be the favourites - I only underestimated Nikara a little bit - so he's a big boy already!;-)
