Driving stages on topo maps

The film of the 2010 NZ Silver Fern Rally was screened on NZ tv last weekend.
There were segments which showed the Brits driving the stages on topographic maps. Is this still a common practice in the UK ?
I was impressed with the pace shown by Simon Tysoe (until put out by a mechanically related accident) and Andrew Siddall.
I am trying to find a u-tube clip.

Most UK forest stage rallies use route notes supplied by the event organisers these days. The most notable exception is the Roger Albert Clark Rally which only permits the use of maps as was the case in the days when the historic cars on the event were used on the RAC Rally in period.

Besides the Roger Albert (which typically uses 1:25,000 scale maps or photo-enlarged 1:50,000) all UK night road rallies use plotted or provided routes on 1:50,000 maps. This means that your average Brit navigator who has this experience can call a road from a topo map very accurately. Contours and steep drops, crossing over streams/railway lines (possible humps), fords and so on. Enduro events frequently have daytime selectifs on private roads, again these will only be plotted on the 1:50,000 map.
