View Full Version : Best National anthem?

Another little fluff thread to keep us amused over the long winter.

As the title suggests which anthems to you like to hear at the end of a race and which send you to sleep?

Now it's not so common I enjoy the Italian - very upbeat, and the Brazilian. But the German, Austrian and UK anthems are dull, Dull, DULL!

The Italian national anthem is very catchy, I always hum along to it. The Spainish anthem ain't bad either.

Shall we hum it together?

Dadadaddum dadadadum dadadadum ;)

I do like it when it seems to be building for a big finish, almost stops then launches into a chorus!

IMO "La Marseillaise" is the best, with "Oh Canada" a somewhat distant second!
If we ever here them at an F1 podium celebration is another story! ;)

Italian for my favorite also. Pretty festive feeling even after a long race. Brazil second, and there is Japan's that has a sad slow tempo version that i like sometimes.

Not this Italian version though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhtYvhqU2-0&feature=related

The Italian Natioal Anthem is like two enitirely different bits of music tacked onto each other. I think that it sort of sounds like the music that comes from an old-time carousel with the horsies going around.
It is utterly bonkers and quite quite brilliant.

There...that is the last time I heard it for victory at a sporting event but it was a sweet one..... God knows we don't have a Canadian in Grand Prix and may not for a while yet. So I guess for you F1 guys to hear our anthem, you have to hear it here.

That said, ok, my favourites when I hear them on f1 races?

I love the French for some reason. Not sure why I have warmed to the Italian one either, because it is rather comical to my ear but there you go.

Those two...and of course God Save the Queen.....

I agree that Italian anthem is really catchy. But I have also enjoyed Brazilian, German and Spanish anthems. In F1 terms the combination of GER+ITA anthems has remained quite special if not to say legendary for me - from Schumacher/Ferrari days. After Vettel had won in 2008 in a Toro Rosso, I recognized that something very familiar was going on...

I was going to be all serious about it, mentioning how the Italian is at the same time serious and festive, how "God save the Queen" is really majestic and how the lyrics for the Spanish are easy to remember....

But now I have to say The Imperial March is definitely the best.

GER+ITA is an awesome combination. Vettel's STR victory felt really special as the only other possible GER+ITA combination in recent times.

The Austrian anthem is just really long and boring. I found myself this year doing things around the house rather than watching anthems.

the ESP+FRA combo was also good, alongside the ESP+ITA ones too.

The Brazilian, Australian and British anthems are about mid-tier level of fanfare for me.

Can't remember the Finnish one.

Somehow I don't think a GER+UK combo suits.

Well there's a lesson there for other countries I think - if you're getting a bit bored of your national anthem after the first verse, just give up right there. That's what we do. God Save The Queen actually has at least 3 verses, more in some versions.

A couple of years ago the combined choirs of the U.S. military academies performed the anthem before the Super Bowl. When I hear the Italian anthem I get a mental picture of the village brass band in fancy uniforms with loads of brass buttons.
The German anthem conjures up images of the Wermacht marching into somewhere.
The British makes me think of a majestic state funeral.
The US makes me think of a prayer meeting in a white clapboard church somewhere in the rural USA.
The Marsellaise - now there's a proper anthem! With an anthem like that, I could almost accept becoming French

I laughed at the version of the Spanish anthem that they played in Monaco at 2006 and 2007 -long version, ultra-fast tempo-. As for which anthem I like best, maybe it's the Italian, but I've heard it so many times that it doesn't feel that great anymore.

Of course the Star Spangled Banner is my favorite! But, seeing that at this rate we will never hear it after an F1 race, I gotta say the Italian National Anthem by a long shot.....

Kinda funny when I think back-when Schumacher was winning every race-that I got so used to hearing the German and Italian anthems together that they almost became inseperable. Kinda like how most classic rock radio stations in the US play "Heartbreaker" and "Livin' Lovin' Maid" by Led Zeppelin together as one long song-to hear one without the other almost sounds wierd now.

Whenever Vettel wins the German anthem sounds oh so familair, then it tails off into the Austrian anthem and it just sounds so wierd to me to hear those together.

dixie has certain overtones that would not set well with some folks such as lewis hamilton.....whereas yellow rose was a very popular song for confederate soldiers fighting for slavery who never understood its origin, nor who they be hoping to kiss, much like today.

As a slave, she did more to win Texas independence, singlehandedly, than any other of those hereos of old, including Davey Crockett and Sam Houston, but there are no statutes nor paintings of her on the state capital grounds in Austin, Texas. Indeed, her history has been ignored, forgotten and labelled as pure legend, due to certain prejudices about sex and race, no doubt. Even wiki got it wrong. Benetton always used to have 'God Save the Queen' (didn't they?) and only changed a decade or so ago IIRC.

I'm a bit torn on the 'issue' of Red Bull and the like with regards their choice of anthem. It's like Nissan Micra's etc built in Britain, they are hardly British.

A definite no to playing more verses. It is enough of a dirge as it is. As I heard Jeremy Hardy say on the radio recently, the best anthems are all revolutionary ones.
