So Eire and Greece were well-off countries before they joined the EU?

Ireland was won of the great success stories of the EU and now it is the EU that is helping save its economy.

Between Lancaster&Preston - is that Garstang then?

EU caused Greece's problems, don't know re Eire but yep it was fine before joining.

Stop giving away my location! :p

Ireland went from being one of the poorest nations in Europe before membership to being the richest per capita.

I used to live in Scorton and drank in Garstang.

More helicopters per capita in the world I heard. But it wasn't sustainable was it? EU seems to be a poisoned chalice, hopefully this will cause it's end.

I disagree entirely. The EU allows the economies of Western Europe compete with larger economies of USA, China and Japan.

The problems in Ireland are a result of mismanagement in the Irish banking system. Not EU membership.

hmm...

"The [EU] Parliament wanted an increase of 6 per cent on this year’s £88billion"

shock horror
to put this sum in context:
"The UK government spent £85.5bn last year on bailing out the banks. Now, Chancellor Alistair Darling is predicting a record £178bn of borrowing in the current fiscal year."

Am well aware what a mess Labour have left the UK in.

Had we got the Euro do you think it would have been better/worse/same?

But the bank bail out is a drop in the ocoean compared to the money Labour spunked away, and we'll get it back with profit, unlike the worthless public sector who just drain money with zilch in return (often)

t? EU seems to be a poisoned chalice, hopefully this will cause it's end.

I suppose it is the European Union that caused the economic crisis in the United States then?
