View Full Version : Mark Webber's Paradise Lost

Well, some would argue all sorts of conspiracies, team orders, and favoritism cost Mark the WDC this year. That's all nonsense!
If the truth be known, Mark blew his chances, not at Abu Dabhi, Nor Interlagos; He dropped the bundle at Mogpo - in Korea. That's where he gifted Fernando 33 points, 25 for the win and a further deficit of 8 if Fernando had only scored a second. Then and there, the championship was within his grasp.
And the chance will NOT come again. Vettel was blowing chances left and right this year after qualifying on pole - he won't be doing that next ear, and he will not only be faster, but he will be wiser next year.
Ya had it in the bag, Mark, like the floating catch that you had to hold to win the match and the Ashes - ya dropped it, and the Poms ran 4 and won the match and retained the Ashes. Same thing - and it feels just as bad.
No good complaining about wings and team orders - that's all just mind games now. Yes! you did have a chance in Abu Dabhi - you had to qualify on pole and win the start. But that was beyond you, as the champ did that; and he won. Bad Luck? No it wasn't luck, the kid was just too good.
Sometimes in life, ya have to face the truth, no matter how much it hurts. Vettel is the true champion this year and that's the truth.

Another fan slamming his favorite for not winning... everyday you see new things on the internet  . Had he won he would have been your best buddy, wouldn´t he?
And the season had 19 races this year... you don't lose the title in one race

Whilst what you say is true; he did loose it in Korea and, yes he probably will never get a better chance to be wdc, but never-the-less he's had his most successful season and perhaps now having suffered through a championship battle he can learn to harness those nerves and finally win the Australian Gp next year. Here's hoping :)

You cannot be more wrong. I am not slamming Mark at all, and I would have been over the moon had he won in Kora and then the championship.
But I will not buy the excuses, and any slamming of Vettel.
Does that make any sense?
It's like, when I'm in the lastrarce of the championships, and the boat I had to beat get's the drop on me, I take a wrong tack, and the guy goes on to win the race and the championship.
It takes a helluva lot to go up to the guy to congratulate him and say "Well Done"

He wasn't having a go at Webber.
Was just saying it was in his grasp but a rookie mistake in Korea took it all away. A win in Korea may have even seen him on the podium at Abu Dhabi with no pressure on at all.
As valve said, Mark just wasn't good enough this year. Almost, but not quite.
A mistake in Korea is what cost him. I know it's over 19 rounds and we can just as easily talk about Valencia and even Australia, but them's tbe breaks.
Well done Seb, but I'll be back at the Aussie GP in March in my Webber shirt cheering him on!

Yeah! and ego's get deflated when your hero loses, but you don't go running around making excuses. You just go on to congratulate the winner, say "Well Done!" and admit the guy was better. I hope you can grasp that concept!

Word up bro!
As sure as that is true, it is a compliment to Mark that he took it that far.
Regardless of what you think about Red Bull and their politics he was driving one and got beat, or beat himself however you want to put it.
Somehow I have a hard time feeling sorry for a guy that makes more money in one week than I make in years.

yeah... rookie mistake  . I never got how can an armchair specialist be so tough on someone on these kind of things. Just like the people talk about FA in Japanese GP of 2007. They actually do almost 6000 kms at race pace the entire season. It's almost impossible not to have your tires in the wrong place at some point. It happens to everybody because they are not machines.

Being his fan, you can't but I have no problem with it. I think RBR favored Vettel. In the middle of the season MW was beating SV regularly or was right behind him. However, once the season was closing to an end, MW started being beaten practice after practice, qualifying after qualifying, race after race. I believe SV is better and probably is going to get even better, but I don't think he's that good.
The wing mini-scandal and the the fact that RBR concluded that SV driving into MW was both their faults is quite good indication in that way too

I kinda agree with at some part.
Mark really blew up his chance at Korea.
BUT not just that. Just think about Turkey GP. If Vettel didn't crashed into him. He would won 25 points! If not that. 18 points should be enough.
Bad luck is with him. I think Mark is in top 10 the most unluckiest person in Formula 1.
And of course it's a mind/mentality game. Mind you, your own team backing someone that wasn't you. It can get you annoyed and lost concentration on racing. Even for just a little. It can cost you alot.
Yeah. I do believe that this year will be his last chance. But i hope this prove wrong. I would like him to be a champ next year. A champ on his last year in F1 would be awesome. ;)

However, I am glad that Mark and Vettel have settled their differences and I hope next year will see Mark drive in a better frame of mind. Sure as hell, he doesn't need the pressure heaped on him at Albert Park this year.

It's a bit rich to blame Webber too much for his shunt in Korea. It was, after all, extremely wet. It wasn't as if he just lost it without any pressure, like Senna did in Monaco.
If anyone would have told me four years ago that Webber would be sitting on 6 GP wins after 2010, I would have thought that person didn't know jack about F1.
Ole Mark is doing pretty well for himself I'd say.

If you watch the incar vision from Korea you will see that when Mark went wide and up on to the kurb (not a rookie mistake) he then put the power down WHILE ON THE KURB STILL (rookie mistake!!).
Anyone and everyone knows you do not apply any gas when you're riding the kurb in the wet. You just float back onto the circuit then when you're in a straight line again, gun it.
I would say, from what I saw, he was eager to get back on the throttle because Rosberg and Nando were so close behind. Didn't work, did it?

What the!?
I am a huge fan of Webbers. I have gone to every Aussie GP he has been in since he started in 2002. I have flown from Brissy for the past 3 GP's and spent the week in Melbourne, not cheap, to be at the track and support him along.
Have racked up nearly 5,000 posts on MWForum . com. And you say 'fake support'? Who the are you to tell me what kind of support I offer?
I simply said that he made a rookie mistake and dropped it in Korea (please, try and argue me wrong) and in the end ballsed up the Abu Dhabi race. This year, he just wasn't good enough.
I have ALSO put the tinfoil hat on a few times this year, even before Abu Dhabi, saying that I'm not convinced Webber has had the same machinery as Seb in the last part of the year. Of course, going into too much depth on that makes me look like a sore loser, right? Can't win either way!

Bad Luck? No it wasn't luck, the kid was just too good.
As much as I think the kid is a pretentious manipulative psychopath, he is the one who had the bad luck this year. And he rightfully won.
Webber won't have another chance, he's a great guy and all, but I feel he does not have the mental strength to win, this year or the next.
He could have done more, but he was already defeated after the pits. He was nowhere when Alonso slipped up time and time again.
He should have passed him and Petrov, he didn't. His head was out of the game. Where was the fighting spirit?

I like Webber, I wanted him to win - but in honesty he was not good enough over the last 6 races of the season. His last good race was Belgium, he drove well to second behind Hamilton who excels in the wet, whilst others around made mistakes.
After that:
Italy - off the pace, struggling getting past Hulkenberg, and significantly a better strategy from Vettel got him ahead of Webber.
Singapore - not too bad, incident with Hamilton but behind Alonso and Vettel
Japan - outpaced by Vettel, finishes second. Still in his grasp though.
Korea - big error spinning off early in the race.
Brazil - outpaced by Vettel
Abu Dhabi - well off the pace and limped home really
--------------
It is a shame that Webber's season petered out so much, especially looking at the gutsy wins earlier in the season at Monaco and Great Britain for instance.
Sadly, he couldn't keep up with Vettel's pace in the last six races, and that is what cost him the title.

Webber proved me wrong this year.
In past years I was one to think he was a bit wreckless, and dangerous to overtake. A bad combination when he often didn't have strong race pace and had to deal with people passing him on track.
All of that seemed to end at some point, but IMHO he still didn't really have the pace worthy of being in a top car. Just about the time I said I didn't think he deserved a seat in the Red Bull, he came alive.
For that period of time, he seemed to be a different man. Much improved racecraft on track, finally getting a race win, and being much more consistent even when he wasn't the fastest guy around. Though I was never a major supporter or detractor of Webber, I was glad to see him proving me wrong, and that he did have what it took to be rated with the best drivers in Formula 1.
Then, somehow and for some reason, it's as if the fire went out. Just like Sebastian and many others on the grid, his ultimate finish was affected by many races through the year. But to me what was much worse to watch is that he didn't seem to go down fighting.

There is a sting in the tail of all this:
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/sport/daniel-ricciardo-tops-timesheets-in-f1-rookie-test-using-mark-webbers-old-car/story-e6frg7mf-1225955997307
DANIEL Ricciardo passed the Formula One rookie test at Abu Dhabi with flying colours yesterday.
And he pushed his Red Bull Racing RB6 to the top of the timesheets.
The West Australian's fastest time was a staggering 1.3sec quicker than new world champion Sebastian Vettel's lap that gave him pole position for last Sunday's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Yesterday, Ricciardo was behind the wheel of Mark Webber's old RB6, the car that earned him a win at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
I found this a little ominous for Webber:
"I'm not sure what this test will mean for next year, but I know even more now that this is where I want to be.
Whether I might be in F1 next year or the following, I will do everything to make sure it happens and I think this test has probably helped me."
If Ricciardo appears on the face of it to be faster than Webber, and because he's younger and doesn't have the experience in F1 he also going to be cheaper than Webber, it might make economic sense to replace the old boy.
Perhaps this little tale has a little more to run yet.

Discussion already in progress in another thread. I don't think this would affect Mark's contract next year, but after that, who knows.
