Some rascals tried armed robbery on Bunsen as he was leaving the track, but his police protectors evaded them: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/88016
Interlagos is famous for such incidents, and he had a lucky escape.

So scary, but they already had a bulletproof car. I wonder what form the "extra protection" they'll get for tomorrow, a police escort?

That wasn't an armed robbery! It was just SD trying to get an autograph and maybe a hug.

Wasn't the Toyota team robbed in Brasil a few years ago?

Such a shame that one of the best circuits that provides top racing has such rubbish facilities and robbing scum around it!

Let's not ignore the elephant in the room here.

There's a good reason they provide armoured cars to drivers at Interlagos and nowhere else.

I seconded that. :p :
Well, Brazil have a high crime rate but the county itself is great.
Not to mention the circuit.

Rather irresponsible coverage on the BBC F1 website of the incident imo. The headline says "Button Suffers Carjack In Brazil", and then it says "F1 champion Jenson Button praises the actions of his police driver after armed men attempt to threaten him while driving in Sao Paulo, Brazil."

Attempt to threaten him? Come one! I've no doubt a more serious incident was avoided, but it's rather sensationalist of them to report it like this.

I don't think so - definitely not here exiting Albert Park. As the squirrel mentioned, I don't know of any other country where they have to provide armed guards and armored cars for F1 drivers.

the fact is the place is a sh!thole and they should clean it up. Too bad because the track is quite good and the good people are so nice. We have our share of violent cities too and it is time to clean it up.

:D

...Or Mclaren trying to free up his seat for next year after his recent performances. ;)

My first thoughts was that it was an attempted kid knapping. That would be one high profile hostage.

Lucky for Jenson that it was avoided.

Did Button just say that some members of the Sauber team were actually robbed at gunpoint?

No, this doesn't happen just anywhere! Dangerous town.

Yer I heard that.

Can't believe how quiet that was kept. Only important aparently when its a driver.

Still good everyone is OK.

I love how Bernie told the Speed reporter that no such thing happened. "Just some guys trying to sell Button a newspaper or something." Bernie. Bernie. Bernie! This could have ended in tragedy. Not something to joke about, IMO.

Brazil is a beautiful country with a bad reputation for street crime, especially in Sao Paulo. I tried to get a 6-12 month gig in Sao Paulo with my former company in the mid 90's. I had this romantic (naive) vision of what it would be like. I didn't get the assignment anyway, but after I learned that my life would have been living at a hotel in the evening and straight to a fenced in and guarded plant during the day (and that was pretty much it - no venturing into the city without a private car and an armed guard by my side)... I was kind of happy that I didn't get it.

But as has been said, I'm glad everybody was safe. One report said the bandits had submachine guns. Yikes! In the worst parts of a U.S. city, it's unlikely that you'd see submachine guns. Those kids don't play down there, do they?!

I think several armed gunman running at JB's car could be considered 'sensational' news. I'm sure they didn't want to hang around until 'attempt to threaten' actually became 'threaten'!

I notice Bernie has been quoted as saying that Sao Paulo is no worse than Oxford Street. London has certainly deteriorated since I was there 2 months ago!

Yeah, but he was not carjacked. Sensational is not the same as sensationalist. The report is inaccurate, solely to draw attention to itself. It exaggerates an already dangerous situation.

Well it was kind of a carjacking incident, but I agree the media do always hype things up
