He can, but after a touch in SS3 it won’t be easy. Garcia is now 7th and R5 guys are dominating. Ares (an ex 911 driver) in the Fabia is first, 25s ahead of Vallejo’s (another ex 911 ace) DS Evo and 36s ahead of Monzon’s Fiesta. http://www.fotomotor.es/competicion/1353/liii-rallye-princesa-de-asturias-2016/

Well, this was a bad day for Cristian Garcia. He managed to set just three second best stage times, this is not like him.....
Was there any other reason?

Pavel Valoušek has become a new Slovak champion after winning the first day classification of Rally Košice. His team decided not to start to the second day. Now it's between Melichárek, Tóth jun. and Kazár to fight for the rally victory. Grzyb lost his last chance for the title with a puncture on SS4.

Well, this was a bad day for Cristian Garcia. He managed to set just three second best stage times, this is not like him.....
Was there any other reason?

On first day Garcia made some early mistakes and was also undermined by his start position on the last stage. After losing so much time there was no real need to go flat out, still he made some nice times on last day, finishing 4th. As his main competitors didn’t get points at Asturias, he’ll probably be champion on the next event.

Overall, Aires got CERA’s first win for the Fabia R5. Vallejo was his main competitor but didn’t finish, after brake problems on the DS. Monarri, Garcia’s team mate, finished 2nd, ahead of Monzon (Fiesta). Best GT was Marban in a Lotus and Pernia was best 2wd, in a Clio R3T Cup car.

Final round of the Hungarian Championship ended today, amid big controversy as Kazár was excluded, because yesterday he didn't stop at Velenczei's crash (the crew was still in the car, as they were having trouble getting out), then he didn't stop at the next radio point, just at the stage finish. When he received the papers of the exclusion, he tore them up. It is possible he will get some sort of a suspension. Anyways, results:

Of course this does not reduce Rok's magnificient drive (I spectaced it), he was already on the first glance very fast, drove very clean lines, made no mistake.....defenitely one of the fastest FWD drivers in this region.

In Portugal unrestricted GT’s are allowed but very few drivers rally them, because the main championship is half gravel half tarmac. There’s also a separate GT series, with only 2 guys competing. Gt’s are more popular on the tarmac roads of the Portuguese Madeira islands, and some 911’s drivers are still winning local events.

The same happens at the Canarias islands and on others Spanish regional rally series, but in Spain’s main championship 911’s were forced to use a 40mm restrictor, becoming uncompetitive.

It is Christian Schuberth-Mrlik, (double name after marriage), former Mrlik, quite experienced rallye driver, and winner of rallye waldviertel 2014...
btw it is his home event.

Waldviertel is finished. Great battle between Baumschlager, Schuberth-Mrlik and Černý till the end but the old fox Baumschlager won again. Černý went off in SS6 loosing half a minute but nevertheless nearly caught Mrlik in the last stage. Gryazin after his yesterday's accident in SSS restarted but except one stage win he was quite a lot off the pace.

1. Baumschlager (Fabia R5) 1:34:05,0
2. Schuberth-Mrlik (Fabia R5) +23,4
3. Černý (Fabia R5) +26,2
4. Botka (DS3 R5) +2:29,6
5. Rongits (Evo IX) +4:26,3
6. Wagner (Fiesta R5) +5:36,3
7. Al Ketbi (Fiesta R5) +5:47,8
8. Trencsenyi (Fiesta R5) +6:17,7
9. Hideg (Evo IX) +7:10,1
10. Stigler (Evo IX) +8:40,7

21. Gryazin (Fabia R5) - superally

Some retirements: Mayr-Melnhof (Fiesta R5, technical), Böhm (Evo IX, no reason), Mayer (208 T16, no reason)

In Spain took place 'Rally Comunidad de Madrid', the last one of this year national competition. The victory came to Cristian García (national champion) after close battle with Sergio Vallejo (Citroën DS3 R5) and Nil Solans (Peugeot 208 R5). It has to be taken into account that the roads were extremely fast, with an average speed of 115/120km/h, so that fits pretty good with the García's Evo X.

Is there a reason there were so many foreign drivers in Waldviertel Rallye?

Mirek

There has always been many foreign drivers there mainly from Hungary and Czech republic ;)

I think it's because it's a great gravel event very close from everywhere around the Austrian/Hungarian/Czech/Slovak corner.

I think it is because great event, very close to the border and also good date as there is not so many rallies in November. So lot of crews is going there to make it as a last "normal" rally of the season before shows.

Rallye waldiertel was the final of the european rallye trophy this year, i think that was the main reason, the stages are very challenging, specially because of the traditional slippery, muddy, mixed tarmac and gravel roads in late fall.

I was competing there twice as codriver and i will keep it forever in my mind as extraordinary experience.

I wonder if any of those guys dream about the Swedish Grupp H or Finnish F-cup with the best Volvos in the world and such freedom.. I am North America's biggest promoter of 240 Volvo as "the Ford Escort for North America"...bigger but that works better with our bigger trees, and hence bigger trucks which need bigger roads to get the trees out..

Cool photos.

His own team have run Audis and McLarens in sportscar racing, but agree that does seem strange. Especially when his team definitely have access to a T16.

Those T16's are probably owned by SLR itself, that Fabia R5 is I think one that Giordano bought for himself but decided to let it run by SLR because he used to have the service from them. He was probably sick of it with all the problems on it allthough he crashed it sometimes too :p

Sándor Ollé has received his Fabia R5, and he will do the entire Hungarian Championship with it. Balogh is also swithing from his Evo IX to a Fabia R5 (chassis 133 if my infos are correct). If everybody pulls it off, there will be between 15-20 R5s at most rounds this year. Also, there will be a 208 R2 Cup, the first one make cup here in almost a decade! So at the moment most things are looking good, let's hope it stays this way for the remainder of the saison.

Mitsubishi importer leaved the series and a last minute deal was made to get Garcia on a Fiesta. Like the Evo, it’ll also be run by RMC (that was already developing a Mirage N+, based on a Dytko proto). Top contenders are Hyundai guys, Aries and Pernia, Burgo in a Skoda and Vallejo using a new DS3 unit.

That´s just talk in my opinion. When Polo WRC is available, he´ll do all rounds with it. Baumschlager always hides his plans and tells some fairy tales in interviews, two weeks ago he told about no or just a few starts in Austrian championship because of a tight schedule of BRR.

Neubauer will have no chance against him - an old Fiesta WRC with 2014 or 2013 spec (?) against a Polo WRC. Of course Neubauer keeps going, what else shoud he do.

Judging from yesterday stages I can say it was just a matter of time till Aigner will go off road, imo he was clearly overdriving the car, on stage 4 he had a spin...
Neubauer very clean, he clearly controls the field, there are reserves obviosly. He said in case his opponents will upgrade (obviosly talking about Baumschlager) he has 2 upgrade stages for his Fiesta in spare.

Nice surprise for me is Griebel, he adopt quickly to the very technical stages in Rebenland and was faster in the night stages than old Fox Baumschlager.
Mayr-Melnhof seems to try a cleaner style this year, but not so fast yet, no mistakes so far though...

I enjoy most of your posts and respect your views dimviii, but there’s a thin line between being stubborn and being stupid: I regret to say that on this Porsche driver’s subject you are clearly crossing that line.

Facts:
1. Despite being used by more than a dozen different drivers since 2008, only 3 drivers were able to win Spanish championship (CERA) events on a 911: Vallejo (20), Fuster (13) and Ares (3).
2. Fuster was 3 times CERA champion on a 911 (’11, ’12 and ’15), Vallejo twice (’09 and ’14).
3. Prior to his titles on a 911, Fuster was champion on a FWD car (Saxo KC in ’03) and on a 4WD car (Punto S2000 in ’07). His CERA’s rally winning score is one of the best in the series history.
4. In 2014 Fuster entered the CERA on a Fiesta R5. He managed to win 4 rallies, the same number Vallejo won on his 911, and fight for the title till the last rally.
5. He returned to a 911 in 2015 because he wasn’t able to get a full budget to run a R5 car (R5’s were 25% to 40% more expensive to run than a 911 on a CERA season).
6. All Vallejo CERA’s wins were in 911’s, the car he drove from 2008 to 2014. Still, a few years back he was also a top contender on FWD KC1600/S1600 cars, managing to become an official driver for FIAT and Renault importers teams.
7. Despite some events on S2000 cars and last season on a DS3 R5, Vallejo was never able to fight for a win on a CERA rally with a 4WD car.
8. Ares was the CERA revelation in 2015. He managed to win 3 events on a 911 against Fuster, Vallejo and all the other 911 drivers.
9. Last year, on his 3dr outing in a R5 car, he won CERA’s Rally Princesa de Asturias using a Fabia.
10. On this weekend Rallye Sierra Morena he used a i20 R5 and was, alongside Garcia and Pernia, one of the drivers fighting for the win.
11. Burgo never won any CERA rally on a 911. He was slower than top 911 drivers during past seasons and he managed to become vice champion last year, one of the most atypical CERA’s rally seasons ever, using also other cars (208T16 and Lancer N+). His best CERA results were in on his Lancer Gr.N or N+ days (several time Gr. N champion and 2 overall rally wins).

I hope the data (easily checked on eWRC fantastic site) will make you realize that top 911 drivers results on spanish championship (like also in other countries) shouldn’t be judged lightly. Besides not being easy to win in a 911 (remember, in 9 years only 3 guys did it), Fuster and Ares examples clearly show that 911’s top drivers can also win on other cars and even Vallejo unexplained lack of speed on 4wd cars doesn’t hurt his amazing achievements during 911’s CERA era.

Vallejo it's getting old. He's been around for quite some time and some of the "older" drivers cannot adapt so good to this type of machinery. And let me say that when he won with the Porsche he was not given much of an oposition from faster guys... and the freaking thing was unrestricted.

Kudos to Garcia, proving that he is in fact a great driver, and the championship last year was not just do to the car. For me the bigest disappointement of the rally was the Suzuki N5 machine. Slower than any of the R5 cars with a great driver. Doesn't look to good for the N5 cars by now

Vallejo it's getting old. He's been around for quite some time and some of the "older" drivers cannot adapt so good to this type of machinery. And let me say that when he won with the Porsche he was not given much of an oposition from faster guys... and the freaking thing was unrestricted.

but while getting old that wasn't problem to won championships with a more powerfull car.
This driver with equal machinery is minutes from leader.
That's why I didn't like this situation last year,a situation that some guys here cant understand,or they pretend that they haven't understand.

You just did it. I was just making assumption he is not comfortable with DS3 R5, (in fact who was?), and it is perceived as an excuse? Excuse for what? What is his ambition? What is his budget? What he wants to do on international level? Excuse for what exactly?

you make an excuse, not the driver, with you I am talking not with the driver.
telling that ds3 r5 is not comfortable for him, while a 400 bhp rear wheel drive is more comfortable is ridiculous
The truth is that now he hasn't got the power advantage, and best drivers win or are close for a win.

nice post but,you didn't explain why Vallejo cant win with r5 car.As you said is several years champion. (...) when you will answer this question, you will see who is the stubborn and stupid.

I’ve already admitted it: it’s a mystery why Vallejo can’t be fast on a 4wd machine as he was on the 911’s or in the FWD cars he drove before. But that doesn’t make you less stubborn/stupid on this issue, because you’re forgetting a crucial aspect: he won all those rallies mostly against equal machines, as his main competitors were also driving 911’s!

You may ask why the 911 become so popular on spanish rally scene and the answer is somehow obvious: S2000 and R5 cars were considered too expensive (we tend to forget but they actually were/are!) and the liberal spanish ASN is always looking for cheaper ways to get more drivers involved on their rally series. GT’s, notably the 911, were the perfect solution as their wow factor also worked as a magnet on sponsors and fans.

I remember the first time I saw them on one of the Galician CERA’s rounds: I was shocked! Besides the 911’s there was also a 360GT and all those beasts simply looked unfit for rally to me! In due time, some become proper rally machines, while others (like the Ferrari) were discarded. But all the drivers that managed to get total control of those close to 400hp fully delivered to the rear axle on tiny, slippery and hazard roads deserved my deep respect.

That’s why I honestly think it’s so hard for you to understand: you probably never saw one of those beasts properly driven on a rally stage. Otherwise you’d agree their drivers are rally heroes!

all those beasts simply looked unfit for rally to me!

Why not? Do You believe there was 4wd in 1911? turbo? I think not. Of course the technology evolves, but there is a simple thing I don't understand - if all rally cars have to be 4wd (I don't min that) and restricted in same way, why they aren't? We have R1 - R5 up to space ships WRCs as they are now, why can't we have R-GT with the deserved technology aspect? What You understand rally is, and I don't?

Mirek

It was said thousand times. R-GT are usually built from exclusive sportscars. Their market competitors are not Peugeot, Ford or Škoda but brands like Lamborghini or Ferrari. Unless they could create a new top class there is no reason for any GT manufacturer to even think about supporting GTs in rallying. Without manufacturer support the class as a whole is dead just like it was proven already. One or two countries which create specific rules to push them as a top class don't change the whole picture.

Just reconcile to that. GT brands compete with other GT brands in circuit series while rallying has been a sport for masses.

I don't care if they run porsches/Ferraris/whatever,they can run whatever they want, but these cars cant be champions against r5 cars.

Guys, debate all you like but please don't insult each other; no need for it on here.

I enjoy reading the debate (personally, i can understand someone being unable to adapt to 4WD as well as 2WD, but maybe it would just be a personal issue with the DS3; sometimes people just aren't well suited to a particular car) but remember that it's subjective and not based on fact, so it's OK to have different opinions.

If rallying was purely factual, none of us would enjoy it as much!

What I'm referring to: @dodge33cymru wrote, that somebody can not adapt to different drive. I agree, because I was lucky last year to be a codriver in an old BMW E36 M3, in wet!! After beeing a copilot for almost 20 years in front drive cars, this is something TOTAL different. No way for some amateur rally driver to step from FWD to RWD. It is a retirement after first few bends (retirement due to ''off the road'').
So, even Vallejo is not an ordinary amateur driver, he might have some problems with 4WD car. Why not??
And beside that, DS3 R5 is far away from Fiesta or Fabia. I hope dimvii you agree with this....

4wd is easier than a rwd rear engine car.Except that we are talking about multiple champion, not an amateur.

I am not so sure at asphalt if its slower. At Portugal ds3 r5 done 1-2 at last rally,Abbring was leading,Ucci was leading too at last weekend.
We cant say that they are slower at tarmac.Unreliable yes.
Burgo was with fabia r5 btw and he was slow too.

And Vallejo car comes from the same Portuguese Shop as the Portuguese DS3 R5 bi-champion winning car. And, it's a totally new car. Burgo was slower but he had food poison through the weekend. The participation in the rally was even in jeopardy because of that.

And yes dimvii, I do understand your point regarding the unrestricted Porsches. And like to see them in rally, but when unrestricted they are the most boring thing I ever saw. Drivers just relly on power on the straights.

On those basic things you forgot to mention that 911’s are 150kg heavier than R5’s…

Honestly I quit trying to make you understand the obvious: there was an overall balance between the 911 and the S2000/R5 on the spanish rally series; in faster or smooth stages the Porsche was ahead while on the sinuous or irregular roads the S2000/R5 were in front. That balance was ruined by 2015 rules (38mm restrictor on 911’s).

Taking Vallejo or Burgo less convincing exhibitions on current R5’s and intentionally forgetting former Porsche drivers that have already proved can be fast in any type of car, like Ares, Fuster, Pons or even our Portuguese champ JP Fontes and his team mate Carlos Vieira, in order to argue that 911 drivers were slower drivers that could only win due to an alleged technical superiority, reveals on what side of this debate is the stubbornness and/or stupidity.

Btw, about that alleged superiority here’s the link to 2010 CERA results http://www.ewrc-results.com/season.php?s=2010&nat=8 , the year Hevia in a Fabia S2000 defeated Fuster on his 911 3.6 and another to 2014 CERA results http://www.ewrc-results.com/season.php?s=2014&nat=8 , the only year there was a proper competition between a 911 and a R5. Any impartial viewer can easily conclude that Vallejo's 911 3.8L and Fuster's (yep, the same one) Fiesta R5 were on a close fight all over the year and Fuster’s retirements were the main key for Vallejo winning the series.

As a rally fan I’ll miss 911’s on my visits to spanish rally’s, but I’ll keep enjoying those and applauding the best drivers no matter what kind of car they’re using, as long they use them on max attack mode!

Actually, that video (another La Tula Sport nice work) is from a classic Asturias SS, the well known Nueva-Labra ( http://www.rallyellanes.com/2016/nueva-labra.asp ). The footage was taken on Llamigo straight, after 800m on full throttle, but if anyone remembered to make a similar video on the more sinuous section, close to Labra, the result would be quite different: probably with the 911 behind the R5 and even the N+. The whole 19.9 stage kms can be seen through this amazing onboard: https://youtu.be/1Za0gkw3tSI?t=82

Yep, what a coincidence! From that precise SS of the 2015 Rallye Villa de Llanes there’s an on-board of Vallejo’s 911. Now, unless anyone is blind, everybody must recognize that these 15m09s (large screen recommended) are a fantastic driving show and a material proof that top 911 drivers weren’t only fast on straights!

Btw, all rally long Vallejo and Yonatan Perez (Fiesta R5) we’re in a close fight for the first place. Vallejo win was only decided on last SS, with a final 8.1s difference, after 160 stage kms ( https://www.ewrc-results.com/results.php?e=21327&s=97017 ). The previous year Fuster easily won the rally in a Fiesta R5, as Vallejo lost big time in one off. But on Nueva-Labra SS Fuster was 7.9s faster than Vallejo on the first pass and 11.2 slower at the second. Numbers that help to realize how balanced the spanish 911 vs S2000/R5 overall match was.

Baumschlager said last year, that with WRC-drivers in championship he has to drive on his limits - that´s is the result of this.

one point of view...
there´s an other one: he was under pressure from a guy in same car (except extra Ethanol power), who had very little experience with this car, very limited stage knowledge (last and only start 2010), and who quit serious rallying 4 years ago...

who knows...anyway, Andi Aigner won´t find Budget for whole season, and Raimund Baumschlager will again have the best car from next Rallye on...

First rally for Slovenian championship. For our circumstances more than solid entry list. Favorite, ofcourse Andreas Aigner.

BTW-this year is 20 years since I was first time as a codriver. The whole time I was sitting in FWD cars (one exception-Escort Cosworth), but this time it is going to be a new experience: M3. I'm excited as a small kid going for the first time in a candy store....
