Olivier Gillet back in rallying this week-end at rallye du Chablais, 3rd event of swiss championship in a Clio R3 ;)
Sure he will be Michaël Burri and Antonio Galli's main contender in the R3/2WD class ;)
Wow !!!! Overall Florian Gonon in his "old" Subaru is completely dominating S2000s(Ballinari is more than 20" behind)
In GrR/2WD, Burri Jr has not really contenders, whereas Galli, Carron and Gillet are fighting for 2nd position ;)

Ηari any comments from Harrach about his r4 evo ix?
No, not really. He was only using some R4 parts according his press release.
And how was the snow in late May? :)
The snow was a nice suprise for a rally which has normally very hot summer weather
+27 degrees on leg 1, + 1 degree on leg 2 morning :-)

Entries closed yesterday for FRC Rally Lapua June 11th. Looking at the list (https://kiti.akk-motorsport.fi/modules/system/stdreq.aspx?P=1&VID=default&SID=250106301228721&A=open%3akiti%3aregistration_listclasses%3a254896% 2cset%3asession.l9%3aregistration_listclasses&S=2&C=53390), all I can think of is that some top N4 drivers must be saving their budget for Rally Finland. Only Salo and Lindroos to challenge for the victory - no Nikara, no Rantanen, no Vihavainen and of course no Tuohino.

Rally will have four special stages, first and fourth being the same stage. Total competetive distance is around 94 kilometres, total rally distance 169 kms. All stages are longer than 20 kilometres, longest being SS1/4 above 24 kms. SS1/4 and SS3 will also have some tarmac sections, 12,5 kms in total.
First cars as follows: (-1 hour for CET)
SS1 - 12.19
SS2 - 14.12
SS3 - 14.44
SS4 - 16.32
Live results will appear in here: Tulossivu (http://tulossivu.autourheilu.fi/)
Championship standings: http://www.rallism.fi/attachements/2011-05-31T10-06-05318.pdf
Points will be given to top 10 as follows: 22-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2
Group F Vetomies rally will be held together with FRC events in Lapua and Kerava (September 17th). However, in Lapua there are only 19 entries to Vetomies event. Unfortunalately there's a date clash with 1000 Lakes Rally, a historic event held on the familiar 1000 Lakes stages on the same day and that lured more Gr. F drivers.
And as it've been mentioned earlier, at FRC Lapua, Jari-Matti Latvala will drive Ford Escort BDA as a course car. He is a rally official but nevertheless will be driving as he likes - fast.

I like the idea of privateers being able to build cars that can compete against manufacturers. Just like in the UK, original N4 will be banned. Instead FWD and RWD cars will compete against each other.
Hope this will atract more teams and drivers!

No voe! We heard at SS4 that Salo's car caught fire on SS3, but total annihilation - that's like really bad. We were at SS3 midstage and of course he drove like a train there.
A bit of mixed feelings on the event. Time table was good - we saw first 25-60 cars on three of the four stages with no problems. On first SS1 we saw one off (Vainionpää), SS3 was nice spot as well and SS4 a tight yet stale tarmac left which is of course unusual in Finnish rallying. On that corner - which on SS1 was the first corner of the whole rally Dutch gentlemen driver Kees Burger had a double roll in Subaru, roll cage dameged. Then again cars after first 20 ran with terrible long intervals - which of course was due to ambulance on SS1. Also, the number of retirements was huge - 45 out of 100 and many of them were top runners: Nikara, Salo, Ketomäki, Rantanen, Hiltunen; Lappi, Mänty, Hautamäki, Kinnunen. Hautamäki had a good chance to take the lead on 2WD, as well as Mänty had a great chance to take "home victory" - alas but no. A pacenote error apparently caused victory for Joonas Lindroos, however the championships are very much open for the last round which of course is good.
Pinch of salt for the rally was of course Jari-Matti Latvala in an Escort MkII. Saw him on SS1 and SS4 (he missed half of SS2 and SS3 for clutch problems) and he wasn't saving the car - definitely most spectacular driving of the day.

That's what was waiting when we entered SS1/4 for the second run. Accident happened at the very first corner, I don't know exactly how, but somehow he lost control and car rolled to the field. Crew okey. You can see the car in this in-car (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVqSYguoSO8) just to realise how early in the stage the accident happened. Kees Burger is like said a gentleman driver who likes to rally in FRC events. Car is prepared by RDF (http://www.rdfgroup.fi/).

Why is it a pity? In my point of view - it is my home rally - these news are awesone. Until your post I also thought that the Czech spectators and drivers, especially Pech, Valousek or Cerny, really like the Jänner Rallye. What are the reasons of your opinion, that the membership of the Jänner Rallye is a disadvantage for MMCR and ERC?
Mirek
14th June 2011, 16:53
Because many of Czech drivers don't want to drive there for many reasons - they don't have gravel suspension, don't have money for snow tyres, their sponsors have no interest in foreign events etc. Many of others want to drive the rally but they would drive there anyway. For championship it is quite difficult because it is way too early and too special event (there are no gravel or snow events in our championship so almost no-one is prepared for them). I fear that for ERC it is also way too soon in early January.
I really like the event but from our championship point of view it's quite bad decision to put it in because many of the competitors will skip it and lose points already at the start. In the moment we don't have enough crews in the "big" championship and putting another foreign event in the championship won't make the number larger, maybe opposite.

The Mogul Šumava Rally was in the past for years also in February or the begin of March and mostly in snow conditions. You didn't like that too?
Mirek
14th June 2011, 17:27
Last time Šumava was in February was on snow was six years a go. No-one has same car as in that time. In those years there were two winter rallies in the championship, so having the suspension and tyres made sense. However in Šumava there were big problems with forbidden use of studs in CZ, so there was only Jänner and that was the problem. One rally for which You need special equipment and moreover abroad (I know it's just behind the border but for many sponsors it doesn't matter).
Let's see it from view of let's say Peták or Odložilík. Gravel suspension for S2000 costs maybe 40-50 thousand Euro and for what is it good for them besides one event? The other problem is that large majority of drivers doesn't have sponsorship deals done in first week of the year...
As I said those drivers who wants to drive Jänner would drive it anyway regardless if it is in the championship or not. That is let's say 20 of them but that's far from majority.
Wim_Impreza
14th June 2011, 17:42
Thanks for your answer and I understand what you are saying, but Peták and Odložilík didn't drove in the most recent Czech round...
Mirek
14th June 2011, 21:28
I don't know why not Odložilík but Peták doesn't like Hustopeče at all. Some time a go he said he wouldn't drive there again and it seems he was serious.

And there is also one point of view - Janner is too early for teams and mechanics. They prefer to stay during Christmas and New Year with their families rather than make recce / tests / stay in garage and prepare the car...

Really nice rally! Actually my favorite. This year I was spectating first time in Kehala complex. It has developed a lot. in a good way. I was spectating very close to that jump: YouTube - ‪SS7 Kehala hüpe Kristo Subi / Teele Sepp‬‏ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXcdIwCnhx8)
One of the jumps of the day:-)
One jump ended in crash (by Ott Täht), approximately 5 meters away from my siting location. man, it was scary. Co-driver told me that they hit the jump approximately 170 km/h, with small Fiesta! Luckily everything ended without anyone getting hurt. I will post the Video of that scary jump and crash when I find it.

A video from last weekend FRC Lapua, Riku Tahko's incar giving a view how Juha Salo's Mitsubishi was destroyed in torching fire. I think it's Salo and co-driver Salminen walking in front of Tahko's car in all white overalls at around 2 minutes mark, talking in phones and having quite clearly some nervous disbelief in their body language. At the beginning of the video it's Tahko's co-driver talking saying: don't drive any closer, I go in and help, take off my intercom. Tahko was 5th car to arrive after Salo, so the car had been on fire for about 8-10 minutes already.
Here's also set of pictures from Kees Burger's roll on SS1.

modri dirkac
1st July 2011, 14:30
No, no Aleks Humar. Now he is fit (after the injury - bike), but he is 2 races behind with no possibility of beeing the national Champion again. Škoda Slovenia and Target Team wants to win 2 Championships: manufacturer and drivers. This is the reason Loghi will contest all the remaining rallies in Slovenia, Humar will race in Prealpi Trevigiane with Fabia S2000 and maybe the rest of the Slovenian races with Fabia R2. We will see ...
No Patrick Winter with Peugeot 207 S2000 (he will do Barum instead of Austrian Championship ...) and no Andreas Waldherr with VW Polo S2000 (flu) in Maribor, too. :(

I just came back from Maribor and Beppo Harrach was spectacular wherever I watched . On the fast parts he was the fastest , on the jump his was the longest ( he even had one jump with the car fully sideways in the air ! ) . I really can't understand where does this pace come from , last year he was much slower than Mundl . Everywhere I looked Baumschlager seemed very poor compared to him . Really a fantastic drive by Harrach . Longhi considerably slower than the first two but also a comfortable 1:10,7 in front of main rival Rok Turk . I agree Longhi was (very) slow , but you must consider he took a safe approach to win the Slovenian championship . If he were on full attack mode , he wouldn't be 3 minutes behind . Turk is steadily improving , but still you can't escape from the facts - he was only 10 seconds faster than Aigner in a R3 ...

Rally Ajdovščina in Slovenia: very convincing and expected victory for P.Lonhgi with Fabia S2000, his main rival R.Turk with P207 made a mistake and damaged the rear suspension and for this reason also retaired. Second overal Humar, also with Fabia, but surprise, this is Fabia R2!!!Also the third, ex-champion Logar and the fourth were on 2WD cars. All top N4 drivers had punctures and lost time. So, interesting short rally, but non-humane heat (37 deegres in the shadow) was also part of this rally.

Technically yes, it happened at the beginning of the nineties. Back then they measured the times with 1 sec preciseness, so we do not know the exact difference. The winner was the one who won the first stage.

Entries for last round of Finnish rally championship will close tonight. So far more than 70 crew have entered the rally that will take place in Kerava in Southern Finland. In 4WD class the championship will be decided between Juha Salo and Joonas Lindroos, former leading by a mere point. Salo have entered in Evo X R4 (first appearance of R4 in FRC) and Lindroos in TMR Impreza WRX (not sure if it's R4 or N4).
Also, FRC will see a second guest appearance from Jari-Matti Latvala in a zero car duty. He'll tackle the route - of course - in his Escort MkII.

One kind of modern rallying history: Finnish private driver Teemu Horkama will drive Ford Puma Kit Car, chassis 001 from 1998, built in Boreham, on the forthcoming Estonian Saaremaa Rally. He will use the car also in Finland's last rally of the season, Pohjanmaa-ralli, on October 22nd - which is nice, because that rally is driven in my current city. Hopefully he'll rev it up decently :-)

Yes, for sure its gonna to be funny, but on the other hand I am not enthusiastic about this idea. It's like ... for instance skiing: you have a fantastic skier, but you give him only sleds.
And - as we have Renault factory in Slovenia - we should give them Twingo (R1, R2) or Clio, not Zastava Yugo ... ;)

Regulations for Finnish Rally Championship 2012 were published today. There are some notable changes in points system, classes and tyre supplier.
First, two titles will be handed at the end of the season, one for four-wheel drive and one for two-wheel drive. Now however both classes are divided in two categories: SM1 Super4 with R4, FIN R 4WD and S2000 and SM2 4WD N with "traditional N4s"; SM3 Super2 with Gr N. less than 2000cm3, FIA R3, FIN R and Super 1600 and SM4 2WD R with FIA R1 and R2.
Points system will be based on the number of cars on the start line. Formula will be as follows: number of entries in the class minus position in the finish divided by number of entries in the class and then multiplied by 22. I haven't followed the discussion over this matter so I can answer why.
Also notably, Pirelli will not be the single tyre supplier for FRC in the future. That is opened now. For those that yearn for an IRC event in Finland, I guess this is a step closer yet of course - still nowhere near.
Here are the FRC events for 2012. Interestingly Arctic Lapland Rally will not be opening the series. This must be the first time in many years. Merikarvia is an addition to the series. Also interestingly Kouvola will be driven during the NORF testing period in mid-July: that could raise interest from NORF runners, though it still is 3 weeks prior to NORF.
14.1. Riihimäki-Ralli, Riihimäki
27.-28.1. Arctic Lapland Rally, Rovaniemi
24.-25.2. SM Vaakuna-Ralli, Mikkeli
9.6. POPPankki SM-Ralli, Lapua
14.7. SM O.K. Auto-Ralli, Kouvola
18.8. Satamoto-ralli, Merikarvia
15.9. Talotekniikka 10 SM-ralli, Kerava
Here's a link (http://www.rallism.fi/attachements/2011-10-05T10-37-28318.pdf) to the regulations, though it of course is in Finnish.

Thank you for the information Hartusvuori.
I have to comment on that. I think that some (or most!) people, who have influence on regulations in this sport today have lost their minds! I've been following rally sport for more than 20 years and I can't even understand the points scoring system anymore. I thought, that the scoring system in European Championship is complicated, but this Finnish system beats everything! Why complicate simple things? Whoever is fastest on the finish line, gets the most points! Why does anybody need to add, subtract, multiply or divide everything? To discourage everybody from this sport? Look at football or basketball. Do they complicate their points system every year? I don't get it.

I believe there is some sort of equality principal behind the points system as the classes are divided too. The win in a class with more competitors (=cheaper class, common class) is more valuable than a win in a class with less competitors (=more expensive class, high end class). Money can't buy the way to the title. But for sure this makes things a heck more complicated!
For example the SM1 class: if Juha Salo chooses to continue with R4 regulations and Joonas Lindroos (or Rantanen, Nikara, Vihavainen, Tahko) with old N4 regulations, Lindroos will most likely gather more points and in the end take the title because of the new system and lack of cars in R4/S2000 class (win in a class with three car counts for 14,something points, win in a class with 20 cars counts for 20,something points). It can be even done so that, for example again, Salo uses R4 in the beginning of season, wins everything, but realizes he needs more points to take the title. Tactically the only wise move would be to take step backwards to N4 and start the rest of the events in a 4WD class with higher number of competitors. For 2WD classes this is propably not so obvious, but for 4WD surely.
If there is someone on the forum more deeply into FRC regulations, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Tänak (Focus WRC 03) is leading by 21,1 seconds just after 3 stages over Gross (Focus WRC 08). Gross is losing about a second per kilometre which was to be expected considering the speed Tänak has shown this season in SWRC.
